Smash that subscribe smash that like and come and join us in the chat aka the COVID 3 tailgate where everyone's happy to see Tom Fornelli back on the show. Lots to get to. We are going to get interactive here on a Thursday. We got some killer tailgate questions, conversations that have been going. We've got the much awaited like one week ago we told you about the best coaches in college football history that were never a head coach. We're going to come back to that as well. More questions from the big old bag of mail. More ACC Media Days reaction including thoughts on Darien Minsa, Mike Norvell and now it's a little bit of Guys, you are not going to believe this. Okay, this is going to blow your mind. James Franklin was delightful at Media Days have you ever heard that James Franklin was delightful at media days? Just came out of the Virginia Tech press conferences and availability with the players. And James. More will be coming. Jeff Braum, Davos Sweeney, among the others here on day two. But, Tom, first of all, so happy to have you back, man. How are we feeling?
Tom Fornelli
Happy to be back. I feel. Feel pretty good for. Yeah. For those who don't know, which I think is everybody. I don't know if you guys discussed it on the show. Did you?
Danny Cannell
No. We didn't know if it was a hip evaluation or anything.
Tom Fornelli
I. I missed Mondays and Wednesday's show because I had a collapsed lung, and I was in the hospital on Monday and Tuesday. So, yeah, I woke up Sunday morning and I had, like, a pain in my, like, neck, shoulder, and in my pec. And I thought it was just like, you know, like, you slept funny, you strained your strain, your strained a muscle or something. And like, I. I took my dog for a walk, and as I was walking the dog, it was like, it hurt pretty bad, and I thought, jesus Christ, did I, like, break a bone or something? Like. But I went home and, you know, the pain subsided when I sat. I took some Advil and it was fine. And then I woke up on Monday morning, and it was starting to become clear to me that whatever the hell was wrong with me, it wasn't a pulled muscle. So went to the urgent care, did some tests, found out I had a collapsed lung, got taken into an ambulance to the hospital, which is about a mile away, and, yeah, had a tube in my chest for a couple of days as they refilled my lung. And it was. You know, I would say the worst part was definitely the tube in the chest because, man, every single thing you do hurts when you have a tube in your chest. Turns out. But, yeah, we're back. We're okay and happy to be back
Chip Patterson
on the show, but. But I think you called it out first, privately, that.
Advertisement Voice
What. What was literally.
Chip Patterson
Because we in the group chat got a full documentation of all the steps that Tom just went from like, oh, this is a minor inconvenience. Hey, guys, I might not make the show. Hey, guys, I might not make the next show. Hey, guys, I've got a tube in my chest. You know, like, to have witnessed this go from like, oh, like, I'm not feeling great to like, oh, okay, well, this is easily. But as you mentioned, the toughest one of us. Right? Right.
Bud Elliott
Yeah. I mean, like, hey, I got. I got a little arm pain. Okay, whatever. It's a collapsed Lung, bro. Like that.
Tom Fornelli
That's 75% too. So, like, it was like my lung was basically down to nothing. And I will say, I know we have a lot of parents who listen to the show. This is. It's called the spontaneous pneumothorax. There was no cause for it. It happened. And that happens sometimes, but it normally happens in. In young men who are very tall and, you know, just have growth spurts in their teens at puberty, and it happens in their late teens to early 20s. So if you have a son who's going through a growth spurt, just be mindful. If they start talking about having some pain in their chest or something of what's going on and they can't really explain it, take them to a doctor and get it checked out right away. Because, I mean, honestly, like, joke about me being super tough and all that stuff on Sunday of quote unquote, playing through the pain. Which, by the way, keep that in mind next time I call a dude soft for sitting out with a sore hamstring. That I'm not just saying that as some guests on a microphone. I literally sat there for 24 hours with a collapsed lung, like, whatever. But, you know, it was also very. I'm very lucky. Like, had I just kept ignoring. Could have been a lot worse than it was.
Danny Cannell
That's what I was going to ask. They did say, like, if you try, like, if you just thought, oh, I'll just tough my way through this day, it could have been worse. That's crazy.
Chip Patterson
Glad you went. Glad you're back. All, all things that are very, very exciting. Thank you. Two things from the tailgate. First, to close that loop, there was real concern you were going to be joining the Brandon Walker show. So I'm glad you're able to alleviate those concerns. That that's not going to be part of your future plans. Why are you absent?
Tom Fornelli
I might join it as a guest, but I'm not joining it full time. No.
Chip Patterson
And since Ryan made me laugh with that one, I'll go ahead and take his tailgate question that connects to the sports moment. Name a college football fourth quarter meltdown in a big game as bad as England yesterday. Argentina. Gordon scores in like the 58th minute or so. And then they. They just. They just let the world champions tee off on. So what's. Let's answer the question first. What's a. What's a college football fourth quarter meltdown that would match what we saw from the three lines. Danny.
Danny Cannell
I mean, I have a suggestion that the 313 choke at Doak was awesome for our end, but it wouldn't have happened had the Florida Gators not gotten extremely conservative and then made some, you know, just ill advised decisions. Then they did try to throw it. It was handled about as poorly as you could have to score four touchdowns in the fourth quarter. That would be my suggestion.
Bud Elliott
Ucla, Texas.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah.
Danny Cannell
Josh Rosen.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, yeah.
Chip Patterson
And call was that was not Kenny Trill for Texas A and M. Who is the Texas A M quarterback on the other side of Josh Rosen around then was it. Tailgate will get that one. But the Texas A M because Texas A M, UCLA was. Was it opening weekend. It was a combination game.
Danny Cannell
Combination of Nick Starkle and Kellen Mond. Kellen Mond was 3 of 17, 27 yards.
Chip Patterson
Great game. Incredible. Incredible stuff. What else, what else comes to mind? Somebody mentioned Mississippi State at Texas last year. If you were going to connect that. I can't connect that because Mississippi State's not England. Right. Yeah, that's. That's the other piece of this is that England absolutely was a team that could have like fulfilled the yearning and delivered that World Cup. They were sitting there with the lead and then it's just melt. When Texas started to come back against Texas State, there was a little bit more of like, oh, okay, water is finding its level. That that wasn't the case because England was not unfit to have a 10 lead in that game.
Tom Fornelli
This is a similar situation that 2006. Northwestern was up 38 to 3 on Michigan State with like 10 minutes left in the third quarter. Michigan State came back and won. But that was Michigan State's only Big Ten win that season. So, like it wasn't. Yeah, yeah. No, I don't like, I don't think yesterday's comeback was like a 35 point kind of comeback. I mean, they were only down one to nothing. They scored twice, which is like third. It's like the third time Argentina's done that this tournament.
Danny Cannell
Yeah, they to their credit, I mean, they were obviously playing with a huge sense of urgency. Down one. But then they kept the urgency like we want to score and win this thing in regulation, which England clearly did not know. That was crazy. I argue with my daughter about this. She's enamored, enamored with Ronaldo because he's good looking. He's better looking than Messi. But the debate is over, right? I mean like, yes. It's like saying Tom Brady for a while. Right. So I mean like he's the goat and it's not even close.
Tom Fornelli
No, I mean the diff, like Argentina and Portugal at the World cup are similar in that they're both playing through one guy. Like, their entire team is built around one guy. Except for some reason, Argentina is able to win that way and Portugal isn't, which should tell you everything you need to know.
Chip Patterson
Is, is Portugal like James Harden? Rockets? Is Cristiano Ronaldo James Harden?
Tom Fornelli
No. Because at least at that point, Harden was still getting buckets. Ronaldo is just kind of like, again, he was. He's one of the greatest of all time. He's not as good as Messi, but it's just the things that made him great, he's no longer great at because he's older, whereas Messi is just great at everything. And even though he can't jump five feet in the air like Ronaldo can, he does every other part of the game better than anybody in the world. And he's still able to do it at 39. Like, he's still the smartest guy on the field. That hasn't diminished at all. And you saw even in yesterday's game, like, there was one time where he had the ball and he was like, he's 39 years old and he's just getting like, England's trying to tackle him, like, literally, like, and they're triple teaming him. It's like he's just bouncing off of them like they're nothing. And he's dribbling through him until he finally does get fouled and goes down. It's like, dude, that guy, he looked like he was playing against kids. He's 39, playing against like the best players in the world and making them look like idiots.
Danny Cannell
They put three dudes on him all the time. Four dudes. He's dribbling. Insert that. The slow mo video that's going around wouldn't even like a great play. Like, he gets tackled at the end, but he's dribbling. In and out of traffic is poetry in motion. It's insane.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, it's fun. It's will will be an electric final. No matter what happens, it's going to be going to be big time stuff. All right, let's keep it going with the tailgate questions. This one's a little bit more football, not futball related. College football tradition says is Western Kentucky's schedule the worst schedule in college football. And I'm going to go ahead, if you're listening at home, you know, give you some time to be able to prepare this. Because worst, I think, is being defined here as most challenging. Because as College football tradition on YouTube points out they play the reigning Big Ten and SEC champions. And yeah, here we go. It's at Nevada to start at Georgia. At Indiana, they don't even really get a home game against an FBS opponent until October 2nd against Missouri State. Get a little Conference USA play and they will start against Mercy Hurst. Bud. Yeah. I'm going to go to throw to you first. Is this one of the most challenging schedules? Especially when you consider who they are and what they can hope to accomplish.
Bud Elliott
I mean, sort of, but like, does it matter if it's Georgia, Indiana or let's pick like Iowa and Tennessee, like two upper half Big Ten teams, but. But not teams that we think are seriously like competing for the, you know, for the conference title. Right. You're still, you're still going 02 there.
Chip Patterson
I think it's the idea that you're
Bud Elliott
going on the road.
Chip Patterson
It reminds me of the.
Bud Elliott
Sean, they're cutting you a check.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, but it's just like the experience of this team is that they're just going to go on a road trip and get their ass kicked and then October is going to come.
Bud Elliott
Right? That, that's fair. But you also get Liberty at home, which is the, the conference like, and you get Jack State at home too. So you get two of the conference favorites at home. You got to go to Sam Houston, which I assume they're stop. Probably still kind of terrible. You get Louisiana Tech at home. I mean like, that's another team. People like this year, like nobody thinks Middle Tennessee is any good. So you go on the road. It's a pretty short road trip right from Western Kentucky to Middle Tennessee. Like just. It's in the name, right? Like that's not that, that far of a road trip. It's an interesting question. I, I think like, there's like the shock value. Oh my God. We got to play at Georgia, at Indiana back to back. But unless you suffer like seriously more injuries than you would if you played like Iowa, Tennessee back to back. I mean it's still a Conference USA schedule. You know, just with, with two. With two paycheck games.
Chip Patterson
All right.
Tom Fornelli
By September 26th, they'll be begging for mercy.
Chip Patterson
Hearst. Yeah, there you go. Bang. He still got it. Only five home games too. Just, you know, seems. Seems tough. You. Because you've got the one home game against Mercyhurst, you've got your four home games in conference play will be a, It'll be a challenging, challenging road for, for the Hilltoppers right there. Let's do one more from the Tailgate, and then we'll start to get into some of those. Actually, let's go ahead. And here we go. This will be a nice pivot. How much do you all pay attention to the players that teams bring to media days? This question comes from Michael McConnell in the tailgate. Oh, you announced we are bringing two offensive players when most people assume we would bring defensive players with bv. Thanks. So how much do you all pay attention to the players that are brought to media days
Bud Elliott
as far as, like, making judgments about the team or, like, as a media person?
Chip Patterson
Yeah, I think that we are speaking to fans. What should fans take away? This is an Oklahoma fan who says, I just saw who Brent's taking. Should I take anything away from it?
Danny Cannell
Are they, as SEC only do three? You know, I think that's it. Because the Big 12, they had six and seven players from each team. They let them bring, like, practically the whole team. The only position I look at, call me biased, is, like, when a quarterback, which one goes? And then if they don't go, I'm also like, Clemson not bringing a quarterback. Does that give you pause for concern?
Tom Fornelli
Yes.
Danny Cannell
Yeah. I say yes, like, they're in lsu.
Bud Elliott
Yeah. Not bringing Sam Levitt off the list, Frank.
Danny Cannell
Yeah, that's. That's what I kind of read in between the lines.
Chip Patterson
Oh, well, all right. Well, then flip it back. Ethan Grunkmeyer's not here. Does that mean he's not going to be the starter at Virginia Tech?
Tom Fornelli
I mean, I. I do.
Chip Patterson
I think he's absolutely going to be the starter at Virginia Tech. But he was.
Danny Cannell
But I think this is more about James Franklin. Like, we want to give our seniors time, you know, like, I mean, and a lot of coaches will do that. It's like a reward to get to go to Charlotte, too. So you got to be careful with how much you read into it.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, for me, like, when there's a QB battle going on, I take very much interest in seeing if there's a quarterback going for that team. Other than that, coaches are typically just bringing the veteran senior guys who they trust in front of a microphone. That's what you take away.
Danny Cannell
Virginia brings Pribula and then announce him the same day as the starter. Like, here's our guy. So
Chip Patterson
tailgate was mentioning Fran Brown brought Ricky Collins instead of Angeli Last year. We were at Big Ten at the same time. I can't. I don't have that on the top of my mind. But, yeah, to me, you go ahead.
Bud Elliott
Wasn't Angeli a very late transfer
Tom Fornelli
that
Bud Elliott
I'm trying to remember. Like, I, I, I read it and this is just going off memory because I didn't anticipate Fran Brown and Jelly timeline today. But like, I thought it was like
Chip Patterson
to not wake up, baby, it's late July.
Bud Elliott
I thought it was Ricky Collins, you know, because he was there first. He went through spring and Jelly didn't go through spring, right?
Chip Patterson
Correct. No, he was in the May window.
Bud Elliott
It would have been weird to bring the guy who didn't go through spring after Collins did go through spring, even though clearly he said on the show, like the fact that you went and got. Angeli says you probably don't have anything in Collins after seeing him in spring.
Chip Patterson
Right. What'd you learn about your teammates? Well, I know what their favorite order is at Chipotle. You know, like they didn't do any spring ball with them. You can't offer anything on the team, so that's fair. Sorry.
Bud Elliott
Now, as a media guy, if you don't bring your quarterback, I'm like, thanks for nothing. Cool. Especially bring me like two offensive linemen. Like, they better have some great jokes, man.
Danny Cannell
And sometimes they do. Like, you bring a center, like, somehow you get these. Surprisingly, some of those guys have some of the best personalities.
Bud Elliott
Yeah. I mean, the center from Penn State was cool last year.
Danny Cannell
Yeah, he was awesome.
Bud Elliott
Dawkins.
Chip Patterson
Dawkins.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah. I mean, I, I do think too, you got to keep in mind, like the whole transfer portal thing where like the reason Sam Levitt might not be there is just because probably wants to maybe bring somebody who quote unquote, represents the university because they've been at the university for the last few years instead of the guy who transferred in. Although I think everybody in our line of work would much prefer Sam Levitt being there than the third year linebacker. Whoever did. He did end up bringing is Whitweeks. That's probably why Grunkemeier is not there too.
Bud Elliott
Wit Weeks is going. They brought.
Chip Patterson
That's somebody. That's somebody. I've got questions for.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, questions for Weeks.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, yeah.
Danny Cannell
Front right.
Chip Patterson
What?
Danny Cannell
They still together?
Chip Patterson
I, I just. He had an intimate knowledge of the process. That is somebody who is in. That is somebody who was inside. You know, he was inside the room where it happened.
Guest Speaker
That is.
Danny Cannell
No, he did.
Advertisement Voice
He's gonna know.
Chip Patterson
Say him. It's a Hamilton reference. I'll let my dork flag fly on that one. But, but yeah, no, that's, that'd be somebody who would. When did you think Lane was going to be coming? You know, like, what's at what point in that process were you starting to imagine what this was going to be like with him, you know, as, as your new head coach? We'll see. So that's a little bit to take away, but not all. Speaking of coming up on the other side, a couple takeaways from day one of Media days, including Darian Mensah shedding some light on that move from Duke to Miami. Late in the cycle, Mike Norvell talks about failure and more. Next

back here on the COVID 3 podcast. Day two of ACC Media Days off and running here in Charlotte, North Carolina. Jeff Brahm, I believe, is wrapping up his time at the podium right now. Got to go see James Franklin a little bit this morning. But yesterday, in addition to the commissioner, which we were able to discuss on the show in the new tiebreaker policy, also got to see Miami, also got to see Florida State. And for, for Florida State, I mean, the storyline is very easy. It is very simple. It is the challenge of one of the toughest schedules in the country. It is the losing that has been 7 and 17 over the last two seasons and Mike Norvell being the face of it. So Mike Norvell made some waves with a quote that he offered. I believe the athletic brings us this one. I quote, I don't fear failure. I never have. I do fear regret. And the only thing that I could be in control of is me, the team, the guys that I get to lead on a daily basis. And so, you know, I just want to make sure that I don't regret any of the work or the investment into these guys to help put them in the position for what I believe we can accomplish. But I'm throw this to you first. What do you think Mike Norvell believes Florida State can accomplish this year?
Bud Elliott
Like if you gave him truth serum
Chip Patterson
if, if you gave him truth serum, but even asked him, knowing that, knowing Mike's positivity, knowing Mike's demeanor, but giving him truth serum. Like, what if things click? What do you think he sees out of this football team? It doesn't even need to be a record, but, you know, like, what, what do you think this team can be?
Bud Elliott
Oh, so it kind of depends, like, does he think he's getting the Mike Gundy treatment with the off season, like pre fire, basically. Oklahoma State basically, like shut the money faucet off.
Chip Patterson
Right.
Bud Elliott
Pretty clear. Florida State did something similar here this off season. So I think you'd have to basically insult Mike Norvell's intelligence and assume he's an idiot to think that he like to imply that he thinks this team can do great things. You know, like, they clearly brought in these quarterbacks they liked more than Daniels, like a good handful of them, and then insulted those guys by not even coming close to what the market knew was the asking price. So I think if you're an Orvell, like, that's probably like the main takeaway you have. You had to settle for Ashton Daniels. Doesn't mean he couldn't play. Well, it's possible that he does, but, like, it's clear your evaluation of him did not have him very high on your board. Otherwise you would have brought him in, locked him up for a good value, which they got him at early on and moved on to building the rest of the portal class. So 8 and 4, if everything breaks
Chip Patterson
right, you know, that's, that's what Danny said yesterday. Yeah, I mean, let's throw the schedule up. Like, Tom, do you see 8 and 4 for this, for this Florida State team? Imagine Daniels is a good player. I mean, he's, he's like, go ahead.
Tom Fornelli
I, I can see 8 and 4, but that's. Yeah, that's probably. Absolutely. Everything goes wonderful. Ashton Daniels is fantastic. The defense is very good. I, I don't know. I don't think you're beating Alabama on the road. I know you beat him at home last year, but I just don't see that happening this year. I don't think you're beating Louisville on the road, although you can. I don't think you're beating Miami on the road. You probably can't BC on the road. You could take down Pitt, maybe Clemson. You could probably. You, you've got a shot against Clemson. You could probably take NC State. Like, there's, there are winnable games. It's just. Even if this team, based on what I know about the roster and what I look and I see on it. If this team is at full capacity, I don't think like 9 and 3, 10 and 2 or 11 and 1 is really in play unless there are some injuries and good luck going their way.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, I mean, I, I think 3 and 9 to 9 and 3 is kind of like the actual range. That is mathematically foreseeable. No, I mean, look, we've seen this, we've seen this team quit on him two years in a row. If you lose, if you lose SMU and Bama, right, you're still going to beat Central Arkansas, but you could lose out easily. We've already seen the, the team quit on him two years in a row.
Chip Patterson
Do you know what they're dealing?
Bud Elliott
If that happens, then you're, then you're like three and nine probably.
Chip Patterson
They also have, and I think we've talked about this a little bit, when they do go into, if, if they're not seeing the ball, if they're not all pulling in the same direction and they go into those games, they're still Florida State University. They still, you know, they still have a target on their back. They're still coming in. I was thinking about the pit game in particular. Like Pat Nor Doozy is going to be fired up to try and beat Florida State. You know, like it doesn't, it doesn't matter what shape you're in, like that is still going to be Florida State coming to your house. You're trying to give them a win against Florida State. So it's going to be, it's going to be really tough for the Seminoles moving forward.
Danny Cannell
Danny, I just, he's in a tough spot. I mean, I think he said all the things that you kind of would expect him to say. You know, I would expect him to be like, hey, I. He's betting on himself now, whether a choice or not. He's calling plays again, which you could argue is that a good or a bad thing? You know, the talking points were there clearly, hey, we did have an 18 game winning streak. We did, you know, five, one possession losses. You know, we were in those games, flip them one way or another. And you know, this thing could be a totally different scene. So I get, I feel bad for him because I think he is kind of coaching already when he struggled, when he had full resources. Now you give him less and it's like, all right, we expect him to coach his way out of it. But I mean, I, I don't know what else you want him to Say, you know, I don't. We. We had a pretty harsh Seminole fan in the chat. Shailen there was saying, like, he's a con man. I don't think any of that. I mean, all of us would sign up for an extension if they offered it to us. You know, if there was something out there, he's done this. And he probably kept doing the things the way he was doing them before. So I think he works his tail off. I just think, you know, he's got some deficiencies, and they haven't done a great job in the recruiting. And now the question I would have for Bud is, did they turn the faucet off or was there ever that big of a faucet to work with? You know, because I think that's a challenge now in Tallahassee is raising money. When a lot of people say, why would I give money now? He's probably going to be gone. Let's just save it till the next time. Oh. Oh, boy.
Bud Elliott
I don't think I did that today. Like, would you give money to an organization where the leader of the organization says the cap's real and is, like, beating the table, that the cap's real, despite, like, the rest of the sport realizing that it's not? That doesn't inspire confidence to donors.
Tom Fornelli
Right.
Chip Patterson
So
Bud Elliott
I think the money was there for sure. I think, like, certain structural changes that they made, and, like, the posturing from AD Michael Alford has certainly turned off people from giving. If they're like, dude, like, you have such a disconnect from the reality of the sport. Like, I'm not giving to that. No.
Chip Patterson
How did it go ahead?
Danny Cannell
Well, I was gonna say, too, Tom, I think you were out. Bud, when we had a question on a mailbag day, it was like, what do should a Florida State fan want to win this year? Like, if you're eight and four, which is. Well, like, man, that'd be a great situation. But if you're 8 and 4, does that do enough to instill confidence in the fan base to all of a sudden be like, sure, here we go, we're on our way. Or is it, Man, I think he might be the guy, like, kind of in the same position. It's almost like that purgatory area where you'd almost. I almost Wish it was 3 and 9 or 9 and 3. So one way or another, it's very clear, and there's not a whole lot of indecision or a tough call to make.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, I mean, it's a really tough question because I Would encourage everybody to go read Brendan Sinon's article that he recently put out at Knowles 24 7. I thought it was like pretty balanced, but like a real deep dive into some of the structural issues that they've had, you know. And I, I agree. I think they've downgraded in the front office. Right. From from where they were. I don't think they're improved there. I think that was. So are they keeping this front office around and this administration around and just changing the coach if he loses? In that case, I think you should root for him to win.
Danny Cannell
Right?
Bud Elliott
Yep.
Chip Patterson
Hear that? We listen. I was just about.
Bud Elliott
It's hard to refer your team to lose.
Danny Cannell
Right. But I think a lot of Florida State fans are kind of checked out. Not that they're rooting for them to lose, but they're almost just. Do you see the ticket prices for smu?
Bud Elliott
They're probably cheap as hell. I've been getting those single games 35 bucks.
Danny Cannell
And the hotels are cheap. Like last year, Miami game hotels were 1100 bucks.
Bud Elliott
Yep.
Danny Cannell
Tickets. You couldn't find them. You can get a. You can get a hotel room for 200 bucks on a game day weekend. I get it's Labor Day Monday night and people have to work Tuesday. But I think it speaks volumes about where the fan base is.
Chip Patterson
Tom, you want to go back to Tallahassee? Sounds like it's affordable. I had a great time. Can I, can I go with Danny too?
Danny Cannell
My expense report last year got flagged multiple times. Like, what's going on?
Tom Fornelli
Oh, something Bud said there though. It's like it's hard root for your team to lose. And yet professional sports leagues have convinced fans that that's what they should want.
Bud Elliott
Yeah.
Tom Fornelli
Like think about like mlb, NBA, NFL. It's like you got fans now when, oh, we're not going to win this year. Let's all start losing on purpose so we can get a draft pick. I guess that's what we want college football to be too.
Chip Patterson
Yuck. Don't like that one bit. One other piece from yesterday was Darian Mensah did bring a quarterback. Did bring a quarterback who came. He didn't come in the spring portal, but he did come late in the transfer portal cycle. I mean, you'll remember it was like right before the deadline to be able to get in left Duke in a very, very tough spot. I know we've got some sound from Mensa explaining that process you had recommitted
Danny Cannell
to Duke with the video. And then it was like the last
Bud Elliott
day I Guess how would you kind of respond to those criticisms?
Chip Patterson
Like, hey, you said you were coming
Danny Cannell
back and then it was so late that it really put Duke in a difficult position.
Guest Speaker
Yeah, it was just a tough sequence of events. My team and I, you know, had been discussing the NFL for a lot of that time and then, you know, we really didn't pivot off that until later in that, in that transfer portal cycle. So it was just my own team kind of a timing thing that kind of was messed up. Obviously seeing what the last two quarterbacks did at Miami was a huge factor. But then seeing the freedom that Coach Dawson that the quarterback played with within his offense was also something that was distracted to me. Seeing the type of roster that Miami has. Obviously I wanted to compete for a Nash person championship. Got a lot of personal p for ourselves and I think mine knows the spot to do that.
Chip Patterson
He's getting, he's, he's catching a lot of heat. Do you, do you think that that's fair that for the pitchforks to be out?
Danny Cannell
For Darian Mensah, I was surprised that both he and Mario this, that kind of cropped back up. I, I'm surprised that they both got asked so much about the way it unfolded. I guess there hasn't been a lot of time with the media, I mean with spring media talking about big picture stuff, but to actually get him in front of. I know Mario because I heard some of his comments too. He's like, hey, we had a need, we looked in the portal, he was available. So we went after him. I was like, okay, like if you believe that. But. And then Ross Dellinger put up an article and it said, you know, Darian Mentz had six hours to decide what to do. I don't know, I just, I don't, I get what happened. I wouldn't fault him. You're going to a better situation where you can compete for a national championship, get the throw to Malachi, Tony, get to have Mark Fletcher in the backfield. I mean, I just think it is what it is. It's unfortunate. I hate it for Duke, but no matter when it transpired, how it transpired, I don't fault him for making the jump.
Bud Elliott
This is probably the first time he's been around non Miami media. Right.
Chip Patterson
That came to us from wral. The voice you heard was Pat Welter. That is robbing. That is, that is a, that is a Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Triangle based media outlet that is posing those questions. So to think that any bad feelings from Duke are being brought up as a Part of this North Carolina based media event that they're not facing at Miami. I mean, down in Miami, the local media are like Duke, you know. Okay, okay. You know, they're thinking that Ted Roof is still the head coach at Duke. They're not respecting the ACC champions. But I think that that might be one reason. First of all, for the record, as Raleigh resident, I think that it was, it is a difficult spot for Duke, but I think it has been a little unfair how it's become a driving narrative for Darien. But you make those million dollar decisions, you got to deal with the million dollar blowback.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, I mean, he might be the highest paid player in the sport. Right.
Chip Patterson
If we include the total compensation.
Bud Elliott
Like Miami was over a barrel. Like they had to get a quarterback and you know, like their internal options are not it.
Danny Cannell
So, yeah, with sores be out, probably is.
Tom Fornelli
But like, I, I don't blame Mensa for going to Miami, but I'm not surprised by this kind of. I mean, think about it. Like, like you said, bud, he's, he's dealt with Miami media. So this is the first time he's getting outside that bubble. But also, let's not forget Miami last year was in hot water with Wisconsin over Xavier Lucas and the tampering and all that kind of stuff. So I'm not blaming Miami for anything that it's done. But when you go about things the way Miami has gone about them with the transfer portal, you' gonna catch heat. And if you're Darian Mensah and you commit publicly to staying at Duke and then you flip on that and then you end up at Miami where nobody blames you for doing it. But you didn't have to say publicly, I'm committing to go to Duke. It's the same thing when a high school player commits early and then flips his commitment at the last minute. Like, the school's gonna be. The fans from the other fan base are gonna be pissed at you for doing it. Like, if you're not making the commitment, don't commit.
Bud Elliott
He absolutely screwed him. Right. Like, but also, all these coaches love it. No, no more spring portal. Like, no more spring portal. Right.
Chip Patterson
Okay.
Bud Elliott
We got our guys locked in. Like, coaches are the ones that beat the table for this. And it's kind of a game of musical chairs. And they, they were the one left standing when the music stopped. And you had to go get Walker Eget, which is like. And a hurt one at that.
Guest Speaker
Right?
Bud Elliott
Yeah, I hope he's healthy. But like, I mean, dude, you know like that.
Danny Cannell
That's.
Bud Elliott
You can't, like, be careful what you ask for coaches, because somebody's gonna get screwed at the last minute, and in this case, it was Duke. Next year it'll be somebody else.
Chip Patterson
Awesome.
Bud Elliott
They had a spring portal. They could go get somebody.
Chip Patterson
And if you mentioned coaches, I am not going to lsu. I am going to usc. You know, like, how many coaches have the press conference where they're big about how they're not going to be doing something, and then a couple of days later, a week later, that can flip?
Tom Fornelli
And that's. That's what's changed. Because the coaches always got heat for it when they did that. Yeah. Now these players are making 5 million a year. Guess what? The gloves are off. If you're making 5 million a year, the media is not going to be like, oh, he's just a kid. That's fair.
Chip Patterson
Totally, totally fair. Anything else from ACC media days? Cross Yalls desk.
Bud Elliott
Jordan got the easy schedule question and totally, like, you know, didn't. I thought I bookmarked it on Twitter, but I guess I didn't. The answer was nowhere near as good as what, what Braum gave us a couple years ago. Yeah, he's like, all these preseason rankings are BS or something like that. I was like, okay, dude, like, just say what Brahm said. Yeah, we recognize the opportunity in front of us, have a chance to have a special year. We have to go out and to take care of business and handle us. Like, we can't, you know, can't go in there thinking these games are layups. There's a lot of good teams in this conference.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, see, that's not. No, no.
Advertisement Voice
You know what Doran said?
Chip Patterson
Doran said, well, well, four score and 14 years ago, I took over this program. I mean, he was.
Tom Fornelli
He.
Advertisement Voice
That.
Chip Patterson
That is an elder statesman who's in his bag and is just like, I'm. I'm doing whatever y' all need me to do, you know, like this.
Tom Fornelli
He.
Chip Patterson
He is not concerned about making sure that, like, he is delivering the perfect message because that's. It's Dabo and him. And they're just. They've been coming to this longer than most of these other coaches. They feel like they've got a lot left, a lot less to prove. We'll get here from Dabo later on this afternoon, but based on the. The way he was moving and shaking on Radio Row, I think it's probably going to be about the same thing. So we'll see. I do think that for NC State, you know, they get asked the easy schedule question, but do you know what Dave Doran also remembers seasons that nine win seasons with an 11 win team. You know, seasons where you beat North Carolina but you had a dumbass loss to Boston College or uva, you know. And so we can sit here and talk about your average team opponent being a four right on your power rating. But he's lost to some twos and maybe a negative one before. So I understand why he's not necessarily going to bite on it and deliver quite the same message that you would want to. Let's see in the from the There was some talk about Virginia Tech in the tailgate earlier. I will say that Brent Pry being retained kept players around and that was something that was really interesting to hear some of the Virginia Tech players talk about. Not all three players were players who were on the team last year who James decided to bring, but two of them were and one of them interior defensive lineman who like he's, he could have gone to the NFL draft and been a six round pick but Brent Pride gets retained. Now he's coming back and now they're using some portal pieces to build out the pass rush. So I'm, I'm, I'm, I hate to say it, I've been hokey pilled. I'm ready, I'm ready to go. I'm ready to go way over my skis. Way too positive for year one of James Franklin at Virginia Tech. That's all I've got so far from the notebook today.
Tom Fornelli
Oh, I'm breaking news now from Boston College. Yeah, Brian Kalyn Chadzinski out for the year, Achilles injury, which sucks for Boston College because I mean as a freshman last year he was pretty damn good. 24 catches, 313 yards, four touchdowns. And not that there was a ton of reason to be optimistic about Boston College going into the year year. But he was one of the reasons to be optimistic about Boston College going into the year and now they won't have him. So yeah.
Chip Patterson
And they already lost their best receiver to the portal from last season. Tough, tough scene.
Tom Fornelli
Could be a long year in Chestnut Hill.
Chip Patterson
Yeah. Coming up on the other side, the question finally answered one week later, who are some of the best coaches in college football history who are never head coaches? We'll get into all that and more next.

back here on the COVID 3 podcast. Let's head. Actually, we got the animation made. Might as well use it. Stryker, can you take us on down to the mail room? This question from the big old bag of mail comes from our good old friend Rach, who says which. Who are the best coaches in college football history that were never a head coach? More offerings there. Actually, you know what? Go. You go ahead and just start rolling through because we got two suggestions that came with the question, but I don't want to spoil them. If you've got. If you want to set, use them as like your first right off the rip. Answers.
Bud Elliott
How are we defining never, like, never head coach at the, like, upper level?
Chip Patterson
Yes.
Bud Elliott
That's how I do too, because, like, if you coached in like D2 or something like that, I didn't ding you for it.
Chip Patterson
Yeah. So who you got?
Danny Cannell
Bring up Bud Foster. Wasn't that one of his. That has to be one
Chip Patterson
for sure.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah.
Danny Cannell
There's another one.
Chip Patterson
Who else?
Bud Elliott
John Chavis. Honestly, was like a really good D.C. in the SEC for like two decades.
Chip Patterson
God, that mustache on the sideline with like, just like some freak blitz packages dialed up. Yeah. Oh, feels
Bud Elliott
who else here? Like, guys who never got it. Was Norm Chow ever head coach at the upper level, or are we going
Chip Patterson
to give him Hawaii?
Tom Fornelli
I think he was at Hawaii. Yeah.
Danny Cannell
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
So I guess if you. If you. Yeah. Joe Collins, Jolie Dunn, like, literally the Pioneer 335.
Tom Fornelli
Learning a whole lot about this year. Yeah.
Chip Patterson
Oh, because of Illinois. That's right.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah.
Chip Patterson
Are you learning the principal. Are you going through, like, football school for yourself just to get ready for watching the tape? Yeah. Let's go. Hey, if we got to know who messed up, we need to know what the rules are.
Bud Elliott
I like that.
Chip Patterson
Ooh, Alex Mirabal. Maybe.
Advertisement Voice
Maybe.
Chip Patterson
Hey, listen, talk to me in like five years if they're still humming, putting out first round NFL draft picks and making playoff runs because of an offensive line that's moving things at the point of attack. I'll. Maybe I'll jump on some mirror ball.
Bud Elliott
Eric Russell, who was the Vince Duly's DC for like a decade and a half at Georgia.
Chip Patterson
At Georgia.
Bud Elliott
And then he became. He was the head coach at Georgia Southern. But back Then they were not D1. Well, they were like one double A or D2. That's probably a pretty good one.
Tom Fornelli
Hank Witts is a good call from LSU in the chat.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, that's a good one there.
Chip Patterson
That's because that. That's what brings up the Pat Fitzgerald with Hankwitz, Pat Fitzgerald without Hanquit splits, which is a big thing to consider when looking at Michigan State this year. Whether you believe that is signal or noise, that is your choice going into the year. We'll find out on the field. That's a big one. Another. Another one coming from the tailgate. Would Mike Denbrock get that nod from you? I think he's doing a good job right now. I don't know if I'm gonna say all time.
Bud Elliott
He's got about a decade work now. Right. Like, when was. When was Cincinnati in the playoff?
Chip Patterson
21. 20. 21. No, 2020. They made it to a new year six game against Georgia. 21. They actually made it to the playoff, but then lost to Bama in the semifinals.
Bud Elliott
So he's got a little more time to go, I think. Also, I think he'll probably will not. Like, he'll probably get a big job, I would think. Oh, shoot. What was his name?
Chip Patterson
Oh, there we go. I was looking for this one from
Bud Elliott
the table Texas, when, like, Vince young and Colt McCoy was there. And, like, Texas fans hated them, but, like, they put up, like, crazy numbers all the time. And Davis. Somebody in the chat will know.
Chip Patterson
Greg Davis.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
Like, I don't know if he qualifies, but, like, they did put up really good numbers for a long time. And I was like, man, maybe they know something I don't because, like, they keep scoring a lot.
Chip Patterson
This is the reason why I don't know the names of, like, people in my life, you know?
Tom Fornelli
Yeah.
Chip Patterson
Somebody came up to me last night like, hey, you know, so and so. He says he knows you. And I'm like, no, I can tell you that Greg Davis was the offensive coordinator for Texas. But this guy who says he played golf with me last year, I got no clue.
Tom Fornelli
Chip refers to his kids as Boy 1 and Boy 2.
Chip Patterson
They are punt and pooch. And you know that little suggestion from Jerry, if we're doing the assistant coaches, I'm nominating Rodney Gardner, Jim Knowles and Darian Grub. Interesting. Jerry, thank you for participating in the conversation.
Bud Elliott
John Tenuta, by the way. Yeah, coach, like, 30 years was only ever an interim for Georgia Tech for one year.
Tom Fornelli
By the way, this is an example of why it's Great to be a good coordinator. Never become a head coach, especially in the current landscape because you're going to make plenty of money.
Bud Elliott
Right.
Tom Fornelli
Who you are for the most part, except for like the teams that you're fan that, that your school. Like we're trying to recall all these guys. It's like we remember if you were to ask us coaches who suck be reeling off names like real quick, does,
Chip Patterson
does Larry Johnson get a consideration?
Tom Fornelli
Larry Johnson? Yeah, he probably should considering what he's done with defensive lines throughout his career.
Chip Patterson
Yeah.
Tom Fornelli
Also, he produced a good running back.
Chip Patterson
That's fair. All right, coming up on the other side, rounding things out with more of your questions, our answers and more next back here on the COVID 3 podcast. And this question came from the tailgate and connects to a nice little piece of content that is available right now on CBSSports.com Brian went over to CBS Sports or in your CBS Sports app where he found the annual CBS Sports hot seat rankings. Zero being untouchably safe. Five being win or be fired. We had about a nine or ten person committee fill out everyone in the FBS zero to five. And then we took some averages. Brian's question is from the CBS Sports hot seat list, how many wins do Norvell, Belichick, Loxley, Fickle, Aranda and Beamer.
Advertisement Voice
Wait, how many wins do they need
Chip Patterson
to get to at least the start of the 2027 season? So I think what he's identified Here are the three 5.0s and the three coaches that were between 4.1 and 5.0. So the six coaches on the hottest seats according to our panel, would this, would it be, would you guys have fun if we just go down the list and say how many wins? How many, how many wins you need? You like this? Okay, Norvell, we already answered that one. Eight. Right?
Danny Cannell
I mean if it's seven and they're like tough losses to Bama, Miami on the road, like close. Maybe he survives seven
Bud Elliott
foreign. Let's see how the season ticket prices and, and the single game ticket prices change.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, I don't think seven does it.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, I'd be surprised. I 12 every. Everything that everybody's reported is like they did not anticipate this level of fan apathy. Yeah, that's like emanating from the decision to bring him back.
Chip Patterson
All right, what about Fickle?
Danny Cannell
I mean, they got seven.
Tom Fornelli
They've got a new ad coming in.
Chip Patterson
Who fired Bo Pelini? That's his job.
Tom Fornelli
That's what I'm saying. It's like I, that To me, before that happened, I would have probably said, if Fickle gets to a bowl game, I would think he was safe. Ish. Now with the new person in charge, I, I think bowl gave it a minimum, but I, I'd feel more comfortable with seven or eight wins, especially because, like, if you look comparatively, their schedule is not terrible compared, especially compared to last year.
Bud Elliott
Man, if they lose, if they lose five games, assuming they lose to the five hardest, which we know is not exactly how it works out, but just go with me for a second. Their best wins would be Western Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Michigan State at home. In a first year, ucla, Rutgers, Purdue, and Maryland.
Chip Patterson
That would be seven.
Bud Elliott
That'd be seven. Five against Notre Dame, Penn State, usc, Iowa, Minnesota, which are their rivalry games that they really care about.
Chip Patterson
They gotta beat Minnesota last game and
Danny Cannell
I could see them if, if Minnesota is the need to get to eight, that's at home too, right? Yeah, I think maybe seven, I think is dicey. Eight, you're. You're feeling good.
Chip Patterson
Seven with a loss, six and a half.
Danny Cannell
I mean, they're expecting it to be around there. I think you have to go over that. And then if you get to eight,
Chip Patterson
seven, you better beat Minnesota. You know, it's like almost like the rivalry emotion factor there. All right, what about Dave Aranda?
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, I, I think that you have to have a season where I don't know if they have to really be in contention for the Big 12, but I feel like you need to be in the race late in the year. Like, if they, if they get off to a poor start there and look, they've. They've got Auburn to open the season, that could be a quick loss. If they lose to like Arizona State on the road and then TCU and even Colorado, like, I think he could be gone by the end of October. So I think for more than anything, it's just important for them to get off to a good start, at least be in the race and giving some sort of reasons for optimism with BYU and Tech looming and then Houston at the end of that schedule.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, like if, if BYU drops off a little bit, which I'm not sure they will if Utah drops off, I think it's important. You're like, seriously in the race to make it to the Big 12 championship game, which is in where this year?
Chip Patterson
Dallas.
Bud Elliott
It's Dallas for sure.
Chip Patterson
Okay.
Bud Elliott
Is it always in Dallas now?
Tom Fornelli
Yeah.
Chip Patterson
I don't know about the future, but
Bud Elliott
it has to move it around a lot.
Chip Patterson
Oh, my gosh. But we didn't even talk about how Phillips shouted out the damp air and the weather because they're moving the ACC championship game to noon.
Danny Cannell
Yeah.
Chip Patterson
And he said the unpredictable. He said the weather in Charlotte in December is wildly unpredictable. And I was sitting there like, thank you. We've been saying this. We don't know how it happens. Why there's always some kind of like, cold, damp ass weather.
Tom Fornelli
Yes, Tom, is that because of the weather or because of television ratings?
Chip Patterson
Well, the reason I thought about it was because you had Big 12 moving to Friday night. And then it also started a discussion of how many conference championship games are inside and how bank of America Stadium provides is like one of the only ones that has to deal with any kind of weather whatsoever. Trying to brainstorm is like, well, SEC's in Atlanta, big Tens in Indianapolis. Dallas is where you're going to have the Big 12. I mean, I don't know if there's another domed stadium that would even be an option without having to go where, like out to Los Angeles.
Tom Fornelli
I have no idea. But I don't think the weather had anything to do with it. I think a window opened up and espn, ABC said, oh, I'd rather have that at noon instead of going up against the Big Ten championship.
Chip Patterson
Sure. Dave Aranda's got to get to eight. I think that that one's that one. That one feels like there's too many games where if you are 7 and 5, you've lost games that have people being like, come on now, you know, like if, if Lance could get them right, the Baylor could go up there thinking it's virtual reality and it's reality reality. Okay, Lance, my fault ain't playing with no headset on. Okay. Are you kidding me? Rock chalk? All right, what about Mike Loxley?
Tom Fornelli
Oh, God. You have to get to a bowl game and I don't even know if that's going to save locks at this point. They've just been bad the last few years and especially with the amount of talent that they had and the money that they spent to retain that talent and make sure it comes back. If you don't deliver this year, he's gone. Because I don't think you can convince all those guys to come back again.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, I would agree. I think a bowl game is. I mean, because you should have a real start to a real chance to start at what, four and one?
Danny Cannell
Yeah, that Virginia Tech kind of always do. The Virginia Tech game is big.
Chip Patterson
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
I mean, they could be like, this is such a wide range, but like, they could win. Like, they could go like four and eight to like eight and four.
Chip Patterson
No.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah. Depending on how the young four think about it, Washington takes a step forward and the young talent that they have coming back and guys learn how to catch. This is a team that can go 8 and 4.
Bud Elliott
Yeah. I mean like the, the, the Rutgers at home, Illinois at home, at Purdue, Wisconsin stretch. I don't think it's likely they sweep that, but if they're playing to their potential, everything clicks. It's not insane to think that they run 3 and 1 or 40 there.
Chip Patterson
Okay.
Tom Fornelli
We're talking about curve. It's one of the outlier whatevers, but it's, it's there.
Chip Patterson
All right. What about Shane Beamer at South Carolina?
Danny Cannell
Seven?
Chip Patterson
Yeah, I was thinking, I was thinking bowl game is depending on how it looks, as always, but I think that bowl game for Shane Beamer, six or seven wins, is not necessarily ripcord. I think failing to make a bowl game would bring those tough conversations up to the forefront.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, 5 and 7 with the quarterback leaving and Stewart's pro eligible now, right?
Danny Cannell
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
That would feel kind of like the end of an era for sure.
Chip Patterson
He needs to cash, he needs, he needs to cash this. He needs Lenores to be good. He needs them to be able to get this thing going in the right direction. I mean, you've still got Nick Harbor. I mean the, the individuals on this roster and I think. Bud, back me up on this. I think the recruiting and the upcoming cycles. Okay. Yeah.
Bud Elliott
I mean they've had some nice wins.
Chip Patterson
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
They also look, you get Mississippi State, you get Kentucky, you get Arkansas, South Carolina fans, they see that, they see their programs as, they see their program as better than those programs. So in their mind they're like, we're sweeping those three games and then Towson,
Chip Patterson
Kent State and then it just. Are you going to be able to flip that last one? Go beat Clemson, Go beat, beat Tennessee, beat Florida, something like that.
Bud Elliott
Like if I'm, if I'm cutting checks to that program, I'm like, all right, we can't beat Tennessee with their freshman quarterback, with our, our NFL veteran or an NFL bound veteran. Right. Like we can't beat Clemson after all that. Clemson just lost. Like, like I, I think they expect to go two zero, Townsend, Kent State, three zero, Mississippi State, Kentucky, Texas and get you to five. And then I think they expect to win Tennessee and Clemson.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, I think that six and six, but we beat the crap out of Clemson to get that.
Chip Patterson
That's What Tailgate says, 6 and 6. If it's with A Clemson win and he's good.
Tom Fornelli
I think if you beat this poop out of Clemson at the end of
Chip Patterson
the year in their house, that could
Tom Fornelli
reverse the vibes a little bit.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, that's possible, Venus. All right, last one here. Before we get out, Bill Belichick, five wins. I don't think he would get. Do you think he would get fired at 4 and 8?
Bud Elliott
No.
Chip Patterson
I don't either.
Danny Cannell
I don't know how hot his seat is, right?
Bud Elliott
I mean, Chip, like the people that brought him in, like, how determined are they to not look like idiots and like, like give him time and run this thing back?
Chip Patterson
He. These difficulty of the schedule allows a supporter of Bill Belichick who wants it to happen to explain away a lot of the losses. And the 40 player freshman class allows Bill Belichick to tell the administration the plan never was for this year. You know, we're, we're building up to, you know, get these guys in. The roster's finally flushed and I mean, there is a lot of excuse making that can allow for an eight to not lead to a coaching change. Now, he would start next year in a much different position than he is right now, but I think you would just have to see total disrepair, lack of preparation. I mean, the kind of just absolutely like screws, not tight stuff that we saw in the Charlotte win early in the season. The kind of stuff, like the kind of stuff that we saw in those first couple of weeks when they had an off week and Clemson embarrassed them at home early. Like those. If they are a together team, even at 4 and 8, I don't think he gets fired.
Bud Elliott
I mean, next year they trade TCU and Notre Dame for Purdue and UCF in the non conference. That's a pretty meaningful trade.
Chip Patterson
All right, we will be back on

Monday to get you set for SEC media days.

Lots more from across college football and more. And you can follow him on Twitter Tom Fidelity, follow him at Danny Canal, follow him at play. Follow me at Chip Patterson. Gentlemen, thank you very much.
Tom Fornelli
Thank you.
Chip Patterson
See you.
