Day three of SEC media day begins today. Kaylin DeBoer already at the mic this morning for Alabama. Pete Golding of Ole Miss also going to be going at it, as well as Mike Elko. Jerry, the Texas A and M head coach, one of the key speakers here that we'll be listening to today, as well as Marcel Reed and some Aggies. You look at it, Kewan Lacey and Trinidad Chambers will also be speaking. So it'll be some of the better players in the SEC available to us today that we'll be listening to and trying to understand. But first, before we get to that, you actually talked to someone about a future player potentially at the University of Texas this morning that I wanted to get to and you had some news or an update of sorts on the state's top running back, Landon Williams callous?

Yeah, I talked to a source on Landon WILLIAMS Callous about 45 minutes ago, I would say, and I really called to check in just to see, you know, what or have they made plans for August 1st? How are they going to announce the decision? That's still being talked about and planned out. It's going to be probably going to be local to Richmond, Rosenberg area as we've been talking about. They're big Landon, Landon Williams callous, Michael Lewis and the Jacquiz and James Rogers they're big time there. I mean, they're like hometown heroes. So they're probably going to do something there because there's been a lot of people pulling at them, hey, come do something in Houston, you know, all sorts of different places. But as of right now, it looks like it will be a hometown announcement, so to speak. Haven't heard that anything's changed in the recruitment. Look, we, we still feel good about where Texas is at in this recruitment. Obviously, it's what, nine days out now, essentially from this announcement, which will be Saturday, August 1st. But nothing's really changed as far as the recruitment front. I mean, we haven't heard anything to throw us or move us off. Texas is the favorite, Bobby, and, and we'll see if anything happens in the next four or five days leading up to the announcement. But everything seemed to be the same there. They're in the planning stages for the announcement, how they want to do it. You know, we've heard it could possibly be at a, at a restaurant where could hold a lot of people talking about 2, 300 people potentially. They're not doing it at the school, from what I understand. So I will be at that announcement, wherever that is. And by the way, also, they start football practice August 10th around the state of Texas. Richmond Randall starts August 10th. We're getting close to that as well. This guy's healthy. Landon Williams, callous. He's going through the summer workouts daily over at Richmond Randall. But I pretty much called this morning to check in to see where things were at with. How do they know how they're going to do the announcement? It's going to be local. It's not like he's going to fly off and do something with the Pat McAfee show or anything like that. It's going to be a local announcement and we will be covering it from start to finish when we get back into Houston.

Jerry talking about things going on and players and whatnot. I also got a chance to talk to someone this morning about the University of Texas football team as well. I wanted to drop some news and notes here. A number of guys actually were out in Phoenix this past week visiting and working out together about eight or nine. A group of players. Ryan Wingo, Cam Coleman, Rasheem Biles, Arch Manning, all getting together. I'm being told right now that Texas is ready to roll. They're really working on certain pass routes right now for Arch Manning. And also the other guy that is stepping up and into a bigger leadership role beyond just the defense is Colin Simmons. I'M told that his. He is holding people accountable. Was the quote or the accountability factor is there with Colin Simmons, the young man out of Duncanville, obviously. All right, we're going to go over a lot of things today, not only just what we talked about or what was talked about yesterday, but what we might expect to hear this coming week. But let's start with Kirby Smart. Yesterday, Jerry, the Georgia head coach came and went, didn't really say a ton. And yes, there was another vehicular accident at Georgia. Dante Dowdell, the running back that transferred into Georgia from Kentucky, smashed an ATV apparently and is injured severely. May be out for the season. That would be their number two running back y behind Nate Fraser.

What. You know, avoided that question while he was at the microphone and just confirmed it to ESPN after the fact.

What are your thoughts on what Kirby Smart's got going on down there? Because I'm telling you, one of the things that you and I talked about. We've interviewed a number of different people while we're here. They are the prohibitive favorite to win the SEC right now.

Yeah.

Yet all of this craziness going on around them with whether it's speeding or now the incident.

Yeah.

Yeah, Bobby. I mean, look, it's. It's the Dale injury talking to people that cover Georgia Day that concerns them because you have Nate Fraser and you have Chauncey Bowens, but guys get banged up, they get beat up and George's gonna play physical lock brand of football. So, you know, they're running back injury away from being in a little trouble. But, you know, I. What was interesting about what Kirby said yesterday to was he said it was the best group of leaders he's had on the team at Georgia. And I know people say, ah, that's probably just coach speak. I'm not sure. I mean, like, I, I think I, I think he likes this team a lot. And from talking to people that cover Georgia, that are on the inside of Georgia, he definitely likes this team this year.

He feels like he's got great leadership. Why shouldn't he? Gunner Stockton. Gunner Stockton is one of those guys.

Right.

Jerry Hamilton

We all know he's. He's a really good leader. He's in that Colt McCoy mode of what he does for Georgia, what Colt did for Texas. I think there's a lot of similarities there. They're concerned about. They are concerned about some injuries. Ameris Williams got hurt in the spring. The transfer on defense. Chance he could get back late in the season potentially. But I don't Think they're really counting on it on the inside. But look, they love their young offensive linemen over there. They love the returning offensive line, their leadership. They love their linebackers. They think they're going to be able to rush the passer from multiple spots and they think K.J. bolden's a great player at safety. So. But I my biggest takeaway on Kirby Bobby was that he loves his leadership on this team. And I think in today's day and age that matters. I mean, look, they may not be a team that hits the portal as hard as some. They are more dependent on high school recruiting and retention. I think they're really from what I when I was told retention is big for them in this cycle and they're in their mind right now. But anytime Kirby says, I like the leadership on my team and we win with consistency, I, I when you talk to people that cover Georgia, he does like this. What does it mean?

I don't know.

But he likes the same for sure.

I want to say this. I've asked probably 15 people this week. Yep. Who's your pick to win the SEC? 15 people, Jerry. I think three said Texas. Everybody else said Georgia. Nobody said anybody other than Georgia or Texas to me. Yeah, that's pretty telling in my opinion. All right, we're gonna have Jeff Howell join us a little bit. Jeff was at the Texas High School Coaches association kitchen on Sunday and Monday before flying here yesterday. I want to get a chance to talk to him about what coach Steve Sarkeesian had to say as well as Will Muscamp who had a session with the high school coaches. And Jabar. Jabar.

Yeah they lost Lane Kiffin and Charlie Weiss Jr. They Lane Kiffin's arguably the best in game play caller in college football. College coaches certainly believe he is Aaron Murray. I interviewed Aaron Murray yesterday and he said he is. So there's a lot of believers in Lane Kiffin. So it's not going to be fair to judge the Ole Miss offense necessarily this year. But it is going to be fair to judge the defense because that's Pete Golding. That is his, that is who he is.

And look, they have two tremendous players come back. Suntorren Perkins is a big time pass rushing linebacker. Will Echols is a stud defensive lineman. They've got a number of transfers in on defense. They lost some key players. So it's interesting that Neil said that, hey, they, they think they can be better on defense because I mean they lost some impact players on defense. Yeah, I mean they got, they got a solid secondary. I think they're going to be good in the secondary. I think that's one area they're going to be really good. And I, and more I studied like looked at Ole Miss. I think another area they're going to be pretty good is up front on the offensive line. And I think that's really going to help Chambliss and I think that's really going to help Kevon Lacey this year and kind of transition into the Pete Golding era at Ole Miss. But if they're as good or better on defense than last year, they will be a tough out because Trinidad Chambers will score and keep one. Lacey will score enough points for them to be in every game.

Unless the offense just changes so much. Right. That it takes the ball out of Chambliss's hands.

Yeah.

And look, that's, that'll be the telltale sign. I, I'm talking about changing offenses. Texas A and M. Mike Elko speaks to the media today. I think there's going to be questions about why he chose Holman Wiggins as his offensive coordinator. Had not, has not called the play in his professional career on offense yet Mike Elko elevated him from receivers coach to play caller. And offensive coordinator Jerry Elko goes to the mic here in about two or three hours. Yeah, I, I feel he's going to have questions around that. And you know, I also would say this. I think he's going to have questions around whether or not he can break this string of losses to Texas. He's 0 and 2 against Steve Sarkeesian.

Yeah, I do. We think CJ will ask him that question.

I think I might.

I, I, I chat. What do y' all want us to ask Michael Go. I suggested asking him does he think A M should have female cheerleaders? I Just want to hear his response on that at SEC media days in front of hundreds of media members. So, but Chad, if you have something better than that, if we actually want to talk football about go, we can do that too. But look, I, I talked to, obviously Billy Lucci's around, there's some other people that cover Texas A M around here and we've all had conversations.

Right.

And I, I think there's a lot of confidence in the wide receiver core which I, I get. Isaiah Horton, Mario Craver, Ashton Bethel Roman, really good players and the young and the freshman. Aaron Gregory's a stud who Texas Offer had really high on the board. He was a top three guy on the board when they started the wide receiver recruiting in that class. Really good players. They're kind of saying how's the offensive line going to come together? Right. On the Marcel Reed, Holman Wiggins thing, what I was told in a conversation, because that's the number one thing I ask is they believe that Holman Wiggins plan going into this year is going to be to use Marcel Reed more to his strengths as a player. I thought that was interesting because I don't want him playing on the move a lot because he is a thin frame guy and it's, it could be hard to stay healthy for him. So I'm very interested to see what that kind of means to them because I don't want to put the wide receiver body playing quarterback in harm's way too much. I, I, that's the thing about Marcel Reed now. He's dangerous when he's on, when he's on the move with his feet. Defensive coordinators are just going to try to cover up the first read and see if he's improved playing quarterback. But I, I, it's going to be interesting to see what Mike Elko has to say, kind of their plan for Marcel Reed because if they play him on the move more, I think that's bringing some injury risk in for A

M I, well, I just want to say this with a new offensive line too.

That's right.

And that is the piece that look, they had a plausible offensive line last year. Now they've got five guys that are working together for the very first time. Yeah. And while I think they think that it's a good offensive liner has the makings of it, I, I'm not so sure that some of those guys aren't just okay players that they got and they, they're excited that they started somewhere else at some point in time. So I think that's Part one of A M's conundrum along with the idea that the idea that Holman Wiggins is calling place for the first time on defense. However they remade the front seven. Yes through the portal no questions asked. They they got guys from here and there portal transfers to add in with guys like DJ Hicks and others and then also Jerry, I'll tell you the other piece of it. I was told that he believes that this is the best secondary he's had at A M or anywhere in the last seven years. So he's a believer in his secondary. You know what does that mean compared to years past? I'm not sure. Damen Sanford though, don't forget one of the team captains did have an ACL issue. It was in the spring in spring ball he was expected to be one of their yeah one of their key

back at some point this season I believe but but to your point on the secondary Bobby, what's interesting about that they obviously have desert Dalton Brooks is a good player Marcus Ratcliffe. That means they think Ricky Gibson's going to be a very much they're coming off his injury at Tennessee because Julio Humphrey they got from Georgia. Georgia did not to keep him John Humphrey's one of John Humphrey's son from old Galveston ball one of the best players I've ever seen out of Houston his son but Georgia didn't fight to keep him so which was interesting because that said a lot to me. So they meet they they're banking on Ricky Gibson having a big year coming off his injury and the Adonis Curry the red shirt freshman corner they really love But I I did the other thing they also the fact that they went and got anto soccer out of the portal at one edge and didn't get the second edge that tells me they think Marco Jones is going to be a star kid that visited Texas that Texas didn't push for at the end but a really good player out of Northern California that the A and M sign that that's telling me they think he's going to be in a big time a big time pass rusher for them because they only addressed one edge spot in the portal.

First off, I don't think my life expects I'm not trending in a positive direction or 86 to do much of anything when I'm 86. So props there.

this today, this morning over@ontexasfootball.com I thought the most interesting thing Sark said during his press conference what about continuing to call plays as a head coach? And for better or worse, Sark said the biggest drawback and I think this again goes further into why he made the change he made. He said the biggest drawback is you've got to trust the guys on your defensive staff to be able to make adjustments while he's trying to make adjustments on offense. So whether you want start to give up plays or not, this is, I'm

not going to call it like the

last ditch effort, but he needs this Will Muscamp situation to work out because if it doesn't then him calling plays, that becomes the only other thing to change. So I'm, I'm confident in Will Muschamp. You won't find a bigger Will Must Champ fan than me. And I thought his lecture at coaching school was outstanding. The ballroom was packed. I know the THSCA loves having Will Must Champ back in Texas. They're just excited to have him back as he and his family are to be back in Texas. But I thought Sark, Bobby just getting into his mindset of why he wants to continue to call plays that he really doesn't know any other way to do it, how he wants to do it. I know that conversation is going to come up at some point this season and to me it's almost a moot point because until Sark gets to the point where he's ready to Give that up until he feels like it. It's not going to be worth it to force it from him because he's always going to want to go to it. So I think you just gotta kind of wrap this up. If, if Texas does win a national championship, he'll be the first play calling head coach since Jimbo Fisher in 2013 to win a national championship. So he's trying to buck that, buck that trend this year.

Play calling offensive coach or offensive offensive coach. Okay. Yeah, I. Look, my thought on whether he calls plays or not, really straightforward. There's not many better than him. And so whoever he, if he does ever do that, he better find somebody that's really freaking good.

Jeff Howe

Yeah.

Bobby Burton

Because I think Sark calls great plays. The bigger point that you mentioned is last year I think there was some dysfunction on defense at times.

Jeff Howe

Yeah.

Bobby Burton

That took him away from play calling on offense. And that's one of the reasons why he hired Will Mus champ in the first place, was to get away from that dysfunction because I think there was a disconnect at times between the front of the defense and the back end of the defense. Talk about Vanderbilt in particular, where that kind of reared its ugly head. And that may maybe precipitated Sark's move this off season. You mentioned the situation with Wil Must Champ. I want to go back to the round table with Joey McGuire sitting between both Mike Elko and Steve Sarkeesian. What were your thoughts on that?

Jeff Howe

You know, I, I thought, I thought Sar. I love the way Sark handled it because he kind of, you know, wants to grab the mic and I don't know if anybody watched that, but basically it's MC by Craig Way. Craig MCs that every year, you know, all, all the FBS coaches in Texas get a chance to say a little something about their program. And you know, I think Joey gave his feel about Tech start, gets the mic and says, hey, we're good and puts his arm around Joey. So kind of like, hey, I'm gonna go out of my way to do this.

But no, I, I think, I think

with the Tech thing, Bobby, it's interesting. They definitely, the Tech staff definitely wasn't shunned from that deal because, you know, a lot of those guys.

Oh, they know those coaches keep up with that.

Jeff Howe

A lot of the guys on Tech staff either were high school coach connections. So there's still, you know, enough connective tissue there. But at the same time, I don't. It didn't feel like they were embraced like you otherwise would expect. And I'll say this after the coaches panel. The last couple years they've picked. The THCA has picked one staff to do a chalk talk. A couple years ago it was Texas. Last year's Rhett lashes SMU stuff, which by the way, I don't know that there's a. As a staff, a harder working staff at the FBS level in Texas and the Rhett lashes SMU staff, I think, I think they're really good. And this year it was Tech. The Tech chalk talk was not near as well attended as the Texas chalk talk or the SMU chalk talk. And I think that's just kind of a. A little peek behind the curtain of nobody's really calling it out. The elephant in the room, but nobody's looking past it either. So it's just kind of this little, just awkward tension that was there that

Yeah, I think that there was major tension just from watching it because Even, I mean, McGuire tried to give him a hug back. I think that those guys are trying to bury the hatchet the best they can. Yeah, but I don't necessarily think that they're going to bury it. I think. I think that one's going to leave on Be There and it's going to leave a mark because it went from Steve Sarkeesian. He didn't even try to. He wasn't. Sark's comment, if you recall it, Jeff, wasn't negative to Texas Tech.

Right.

It was negative to other teams in the s. In the Big 12. Well, Joey Maguire took a front to that or whatever and Sark was just saying, hey, you know, they're the best team in the Big 12, essentially. And then we co. We step forward and then immediately after that everybody thinks that Sark is putting his foot in his mouth, etc. And then Brendan Sorsby happens and then the real brew. Haha. Because we thought that, that Cody Campbell and Joey Maguire were talking out of their, you know, once at times about this issue with Texas and then Brennan sby usurps it all and all of a sudden Steve Sarkeesian is removed from the discussion and it's all about the aspects of both. Of both Texas Tech and Sourceby and how they reacted. That situation, I think it's interesting. All right, let's go to Will Muschamp. You don't mind? Yeah, you. You attended his chalk talk. He said that he doesn't want safeties that tackle with their butt out. Is that. What does that mean?

Jeff Howe

I'll give everybody a nice peek behind the curtain. So he was talking about DB's being willing tackler players. And he said, I'm paraphrasing here. He said, you don't have to be a killer, but you got to be willing to put your face in the fan. That's. That's a must. Champism that he uses a lot. He said, and you know, hey, you can play. Connect the dots and figure out which prospect this is. But he said when he got to Texas, there was a five star corner that the recruiting staff wanted him to recruit. And he said, he watched the tape and he said this guy tackles with his ass out.

He could never play for.

And they didn't recruit the young man.

And that's.

That's Will much champion being serious. And you know, you look at the DBs he's had, whether it's the guys he had back at lsu, the guys he had at Texas or Florida or South Carolina, the guys that are the best for him, they're guys that are extremely instinctive. They know how to play the ball and they're willing tacklers. Some of them are our killers, like Earl Thomas. Like, yes, some of those guys will knock your block off across the middle of the field. Some guys aren't. But you got at least be a willing tackler. I think what's interesting too, and I think this is something especially in, in Texas, we've kind of gotten away from with the spread culture in the state. He loves defensive backs that played quarterback in high school.

We see that all the time.

Bobby, you take an option quarterback and he go be a safety or corner a nickel and be really good at it. You can go down the list. Adrian Phillips was a guy who's a high school quarterback. Garden. He was kind of one of the last ones. Quandary Diggs played quarterback in high school. Those guys tend to work out. You don't see that as much anymore, so you're missing that. But must have ran down kind of the prerequisites he looks for in DBs. And he did mention that. And you could tell like with some of the guys he's recruited, like he has. Yeah, Adrian Phillips was one of those guys. He was in on quandary digs recruitment guys that played high school quarterback because typically, if you understand the game at quarterback, you're going to understand it just as well flipping over to the other side in the secondary.

Jabar Jaluk is not a name or it's not a coach that Texas fans have become that familiar with so far. He just came to Texas, what, December, January of this year. But he also was a former, former high school coach in New Orleans. Actually. Now he's on staff at, in Texas as the running backs coach. Coming over from the University of Florida. You got a chance to see his. Not for his election. Okay, what'd you think of that?

First of all, like, must champ. Must champ. Even with a microphone like he's cranked up to 10 all the time like that volumes, those volume levels are spiking with Jalu. I said this to Blake because Blake, Blake and I were both in the room. I said this felt like I'm back in homeroom room with my high school coach and they're just, just talking ball like it's not, they're not trying to talk down to you. It's just, hey, here's how I see it. I, I think must champ, we know this with must champ, I think Jaluk is doing it too. Those two hires, all about this team being more physical and being more consistently tough. And you listen to what Jalute values with running backs. He said, I don't know any other way to coach that position other than to be the toughest guys on the field. That I wanted my guys to be the most violent runners you've ever seen. And again, kind of like what must have said about the tackling. He said, if, if you're, if a guy's going to tackle you with an arm tackle, you can't play running back to the University of Texas. So you'll be standing over there with me. I'll get you a ball cap and a clipboard, but you can't carry the football. And you know, he was going through some spring cut ups. By the way, one of those cut ups is Derek Cooper taking an inside zone about 60, 65 yards for a touchdown, which is nice to see. But one of them, it was, it was a Michael Terry clip and it's an inside zone and he reads it right. But now the linebacker scrapes and is right there in the gap and Jalute pauses and he says, we can teach you technique. We can teach you jump cut, we can teach you how to read. Right. At some point you just got to go for that guy's chin and Be tougher than him. And I think it's just getting that mindset of, you know what, there's a reason why this is hard. Like being a running back on third and two, everybody. One of the great things, Bobby, like one of the best. Cedric Benson to me, was, I think maybe the best short yardage goal line red zone runner I've seen at Texas.

Yeah. Like if it's 3rd and 2 all 11. All 11 guys on defense, everybody that opposes silent, every the house, you know he's getting the ball and you have 100 confidence he'll get you those two yards. That's what Jabarja Luke is talking about. All his analogies. He's compared running back plays related to either a fist fight or a boxing match. But that's the kind of mentality you've got this room. I just love how they overhauled that room. You overhauled it personnel, you overhauled it with a coach, but you're overhauling it with a mindset, too. Yes, you had to rebuild the offensive line. That's a big part of it. But at some point, like you said, a running back just has to go be tougher than the guy trying to stop him. You've just got to fill. I know this is like one of those footballisms I don't like, but at some point, you just got to go

It's interesting. You know, you can definitely tell there are some staffs that make it a point to send like the army there. Like SMU is one of those staffs that their. Their coaches are everywhere. Some of the FCS staffs in this state, utrgv, had a bunch of their coaches there. It's interesting that the Southland Conference, it's a smart thing to do it. They kind of pair their conference media days with coaching.

those staffs there anyway. So I kind of like the way that works out. But yeah, Texas as well received. Like I said, must champs. Lecture was packed. You know, all the coaches, they want to try to talk to Sark while he's there. You know, the whole staff wasn't there. Texas didn't send the whole contingent, but you know, the guys that were there, you know, Jeff Banks has recruited the state for a long time, knows a lot of people. Mark Orfeh is a North Shore guy, so he, especially in Houston, knows a lot of people. So I think Sark kind of picked the right guys to take with him. Yeah, Texas is very well received. Like I said, there was just that, that awkward tension in the room with, with, with tech staff. Like I said, it wasn't, it wasn't calling it out, but it wasn't like, you know, the overall warm embrace either.

Yesterday it came out or day before that LSU had canceled Arizona State. You know I, I don't know that it's a precursor to that as as much as it is the sec going to 9A9 game schedule for conference games and probably Lane Kiffin wanting an easier path to the playoffs as it currently is situated because they can go find another team to fill their right home, home and away or just home game there he wants an easier path than playoffs with nine SEC games. I don't think that is in as part of the process of what's going on in D.C. right now with the Safe College Sports Act.

Well that, that is one thing that's been talked about here again this week Bobby is the SEC coaches weren't that happy about it going to a nine game SEC schedule and the playoff not going to 16 teams. Yeah, they got Dukes.

Yeah. And that. So that's been a continued being talked about behind the scenes with the, the head coaches of the SEC this week here. They've commented off the record on that. The various people that that is, that was not ideal and that's not what they expected when they went to a nine game schedule to still be in a 12 team college football playoff. And so you almost have to prepare for that right now until it goes to 16 until you guarantee to get five spots in the CFP. Then you almost have to prepare in that manner. If you're an AD and you know the head coaches are putting pressure on their universities. Hey look, if we're stuck in a 12 game playoff, 12 team playoff, we got to change our schedule. Kind of goes back to what you said last year about Ohio State. But I think the, the bigger pieces. I'm not sure I've heard a coach that has an opinion other than that.

Yeah, they don't, they don't like it. Yeah. That if going to nine game schedule and then not getting 16 teams in, that's, that was not the, the, the idea. I think Greg Sankey got played and he has not Made many missteps as the SEC commissioner, but I think one, he got hoodwinked a little bit by the Big Ten guy, Tony Petiti. Speaking of Washington and what we were talking about just a minute ago, I ran into Ross Dellinger of Yahoo. Sports. He's been leading the way on the actual really good coverage of what's going on in D.C. right now. And with Ted Cruz and that bill Save College Sports, something happened. I, I mentioned Ross because we're going to have him on later today. He said, yeah, I'll come on and talk to you guys and, and tell you what I know at this point. So we'll, we'll be able to comment and give you guys some updates on.

of Indiana, the senator there said I'm not signing any bill that puts the Big Ten any sort of disadvantage against any other conference, whether it has to do with financial or future expansion or any of that. There's no reason the Big 12 should get even at a lower price, should get a one up on the, on the Big 10. That tells you right there.

That a lot of the, the commentary right now has been coming from Southern schools, Texas and Texas A&M, LSU, other, other schools in the south have said, hey, this bill isn't where it needs to be to have the Indiana guy step up and say I'm not so sure I like this.

That starts giving you a coalition against this.

And it's at that point where Tommy Tuberville, the former Texas Tech head coach, Auburn head coach and Cincinnati head coach, he has a bill that he wants to put before Congress that is a simpler version of a bill that allows for a one time transfer and limits eligibility to five for five, period. And that that's the end of the game. That dramatically reduced bill in my opinion is where they should have started with this one instead of this all encompassing thing where you're trying to take on the whole world. Yeah. Your comments before we get get further into a couple more questions here from our chat.

Look, I mean I think people know where I come out on this. I've been too shy about it. I call it the Save Texas Tex Football Act. Somebody Convinced me that this was about helping New Mexico State or Sacramento State, Fresno State. Come on. Bull crap. What? This is. I sound like RC Slocum bull crap. But on the sidelines, I guess. Was that against Kansas State? But I. Look, I. I think it was pretty obvious what. What this bill was. No, I'm not begrudging Cody Campbell for loving the university he played for and his university, but if this thing ever goes to two super conferences and Texas Tech's not in it, they have a tough time financially in football moving forward. Yeah, that's the bottom line. Where's the revenue going to come from that? You know, the TV contracts are just going to keep continuing to grow for the Big Ten and SEC and they're not. If they go to move towards two super conferences, if the SEC said, okay, we're going to expand the 20, well, Texas Tech's not going to be in that 20. If the Big Ten says, oh, we're going to expand the 24, Texas Tech's not going to mean that 24. So what is their future in football and how much does that hurt their

Steve Sarkeesian said that on Sunday that he had spent all summer working out at corner. That is going to make his wide receiver knowledge that much more cerebral. I expect. I expect big things from him at Texas. Jerry, One of the things that I found interesting when you were talking about Jermaine Bishop, you saw him many times in high school, is that he and I talked to Jordan Scruggs about this too, because Jordan, big fan of Jermaine Bishop. Y' all both talk about his ability to apply things on the football field that he's seeing when he's not on the football.

So he actually sees things, is able to work through it almost like a puzzle, but with elite athleticism. And Sark, when he was at that thsca convention, compared Jermaine Bishop to three first round picks.

And Adore Jackson is who they compared him to in the building when they were recruiting him last year, I heard that multiple times. Adorey Jackson. Then Sark used the term Adore Jackson. Yeah, the thing I. The thing I, I have a couple of takeaways and I've said one of them. But for the people who come into this on different days in our shows, my biggest takeaway on this. Jermaine Bishop working at db. We broke that news early in the summer was number one, he is a early enrollee. It was an early enrollee in January. The only way that they let this let him start working out at DB is if he was quick to pick up the offensive scheme. Because if he was slow to pick up the scheme, this wouldn't be on the table. They'd be trying to get him ready to go for the season at wide receiver. So number one, the guy knows football and he picks up football quickly like a Kelvin Banks did. Like a Cedric Baxter did. Right? Like we're hearing about Richard Wesley, the same thing. So he's picked up his position, he's picked up the scheme, which is not a easy scheme for a wide receiver, and he's picked it up quickly and he's taken it to the field quickly. So that allows him to say, all right, let's get to the second piece of this with Jermaine Bishop. He, we're going to let him work out and learn the scheme defensively as well this summer. Does that mean he's going to place? It's more emergency role I think they're preparing him for. But I will say this about Jermaine Bishop. We said it when he came out of high school. He's as good on defense as he is on offense. Some guys are just great with the ball in their hand, so you got to play them on offense. But he absolutely is as good on defense as he is on offense. He was the most physical player on the field at 155 pounds. When I saw him, I went to watch him. D.J. lagway was committed to Florida at the time. I went and watched him. And D.J. langley, 6, 3, 2, 20, was, is a big kid. Willis had some other Division 1 players. The team they're playing had a couple of Division 1 players. Jermaine Bishop was the most physical player on the field. That's when he was a sophomore the first time I saw him. And nothing's changed from that. So he has he can be as good on either side of the ball. I think he could be just tremendous as an offensive player. But my biggest takeaway is you don't start cross training a guy to that level unless he was really quick to pick up the scheme on on offensive side of the ball.

couple of updates on some guys weight because people are always asking us on on texasfootball.com I put a note up on as Rod calls them Ian Jaffridge. I think it's a great name. Ian Jafar. Still he's still 5 to 380. I think after you get through August camp he's at 368. 370. 372 guy depending on when you're weighing right. He can fluctuate seven pounds in a day when you're that big. But he was 385 to 390 last year and 124 snaps at Arkansas at 390ish pounds depending on when you weigh a guy right. It's that big. So he is down. He is down 10 plus pounds. I think they'd love to see him another five and play hover between 367. 370 in that area during the season. So that's one update. John Turntine, because people continue to ask about turn sign is hovering between 295 and 300 right now late in July and he was 272 pounds when I was through there as a senior. I said and it was such a big topic of discussion oh is he going to be big enough to play? I was like just for whatever reason John Turntine, who's a tremendous prospect felt like he wanted to have abs in high school. He wanted to change his diet. Well, if you're gonna do that and you weigh 285, you're gonna drop 20 pounds at some point. He was actually down to 258, 260 at some point, but he is hovering between 295, 300 pounds. And I always reminded people, look, he was a 600 pound squatter in high school. So it wasn't that he needed to get stronger, he just needed to add a lot more calories to his diet. It was gonna. And he's got tackle length. Okay, he can play tackle. He's impressed. Texas at tackle. I think there's a thought that could this guy be a great center interest? It's not guard, it's tackle. Or can he be a great center because he's such a good athlete? But right now he's not playing center but just something down the line. But they know he can play tackle. Texas knows he can play sack. But he, he's holding his weight. That's a big thing. He's 295, 300 pounds hovering in between that. The end of the summer.

I think it's, I think it's Cooper Smothers right now. And look, I, I think the thing about Smothers is Smothers, the patient guy that kind of lets some. The patient guy that kind of sneaks through a hole, right? Does he kind of, does he kind of get small and sneak through a hole and go grab you two yards in that way, in a different way than a Derek Cooper is going to grab you two or three yards. I think the odds on favorite is probably Derek Cooper because I think he just runs having seen him. I think he runs with such a natural violence. Again, I running back that played linebacker, Bobby. I mean he's a violent guy on contact. It's just who he is as a football player. I think it's a little tbd. I'm not counting Hollywood smothers out on it. I. Because there's different ways to go about getting those two or three yards. But I think as the season moves along, I think it's going to be hard for anybody to take that from Derek Cooper.

Everybody is where there's now he hinted at it in Houston at Houston Touchdown Club, but that was still in June. Has anybody had a setback? We have not heard of anybody having a setback. Is everybody cleared, ready to go for August 4th, 5th? Whenever they get this thing going, that's the big thing. I want to hear from him. I think we.

That's not the same thing. I mean, I think the fan, Texas fans would love to hear Jonah Williams is cleared. Justice Terry is cleared. Everybody is good to go for fall camp. I think that would that for the Texas fans. You know you want to hear. What I think you want to hear is. I know what I want to hear. Phil Smee. Jonah wins. Will mash camp, has every safety cleared so he can get a look at these guys starting August 4th, fifth on the field. So he has everything at his disposal. Justice Terry, because I think one of the interest most interesting things about the Texas defensive line, I don't really factor Justice Terry into it. Like a lot of people discuss. Oh, he's got a breakout year. He hasn't been healthy since midway through his junior year of high school and he finally had the surgery after last season. It kept him out of Citrus ball. I mean, he was practicing the days we were Citrus bowl and then he didn't go in the game. So obviously that was lingering in a big way for him. We saw flashes. But what does he look like fully healthy at 295 pounds? Because he was 258 pounds when he reported to Texas. So does, does Texas as Will Musham. Does Texas football have everybody at their disposal for fall camp? That's the number one thing I want to hear from Steve Sarkeesian. All hands on deck. Get the best 22 on the field at the start of the season. Build that depth, build that rotation out throughout the season. And if you have good injury luck, let's roll the dice, see what happens this year.

You know what I'd like, I think that, what I'd like to hear, I think I'd like to hear more about the leadership of this team and who's stepping up. I talked to someone this morning and I mentioned this kind of the outset that Colin Simmons has taken another step from a leadership perspective. Arch Manning, we've heard, is taking another step. Trevor Goosby is going to be here as well. I mean, what's he hearing and thinking right now as team leaders? We would think Jelani McDonald stepping into that. But what about some of the guys that are here that are high profile guys like Rashin Biles and like Cam Coleman. Now I've heard that Cam Coleman and Ryan Wingo becoming fast friends. They're their friends off the field. Etc. I, I just wonder who are those culture leaders because when you mentioned earlier Georgia and Kirby Smart having his best group of leaders that immediately said, okay, compare that to Texas.

There has to be. So I, I, look, I know people just want to pencil in Lawrence Seymour as a start. I don't think that's necessarily how this plays out. There's a competition at left guard and somebody's got to go win that job. I would say that with full confidence that that's where things are at.

No, but so we, we know so much more. But you know, we've heard the injury Ford's strongest guy on the team. Does that surprise us? Probably not. You know but I, I would love to hear you, you put out a speed Cohen Brown hit.

I'll tell you I'll share another thing here with you guys from CJ and Hank South. We're all staying together at a VRBO here in Tampa. So whenever we go home at night we get a chance to talk and cuss and discuss, so to speak. CJ and Hank both heard that Warren Roberson and Xavier Filsamy are the two fastest guys according to catapult measurements. That's a vest they wear for miles per hour. Look on the Texas that that means Cade Phillips is not which I thought Kate Phillips might be the fastest guy on defense.

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me. On fils to me I, I look, I mean he was a 105 guy early in his high school track. 105 5. Then he had, I think he had a hamstring injury. And these guys are early enrollees so they never run as seniors anymore. You know. I mean Easton Royal ran 1017 as a junior. He doesn't even run track as a senior in high school. So you don't really know the gains they make senior year because they're all early enrollees in college football. But that doesn't sound fills me like when I went through McKinney and I went to one of their couple of their practices. Everybody on the staff Just raved about his speed. Yeah.

All right, this one from Sarah McCoy. More disliked football team in 2026. Texas Tech or Notre Dame? Texas Tech for me. Although Notre Dame broke my heart when I was a young kid. I will say this, and let's just take Tech out of it. I brought this question up for a different point.

Do you. While Georgia and Texas are favorites to win the sec, those are the only two teams, as I mentioned earlier, that have even been mentioned to me, to win the sec. While I'm here, Notre Dame is a hot pick to win the national title. Hot pick to win the national.

And I would say this, and I think, I do think Notre Dame is easily going to be the most hated team national in college football this year because they dropped the U.S. the USC and them aren't playing in the schedule where the schedule is going to be ranked and that they get it. You know, people feel like they get a freebie to the College Football Playoff, the free bid. And I get it all. I, I get all that where people are coming from. And I think Tech gave him a run this summer, though. I, I kind of said, oh, this is. This could be close. If Sworesby had actually played Tech, might have overtaken Notre Dame. And by the way, they were absolutely going to play the guy. Don't listen to anything being said now. They were going to play the guy. Bull crap for show. Second time on this show. They were going to play the guy.

Here's the thing, though, about the Notre Dame team, Bobby. They're very talented. C.J. carr is really good. They got the best corner in college football. Their offensive line's got multiple pros. Their defensive line has pass rushers, multiple pros. They're really talented team, but they are going to be the most hated team nationally this year because people are feeling like they're going to get a free run to the College Football Playoff. And I get it. All right.

A couple other things here. This one from Rocky P. Clarify on my question. SEC still requires teams to schedule four out of conference power four games.

Yeah. Has that changed also? Who are you most excited to see speak today? Some role for me, the Florida head coach, most intriguing coach in the SEC right now. Yes, this is still true. They do still require four Power 4 game or an extra Power 4 conference game to give them 10. But the SEC can change that at a moment's notice. Yeah, it's an SEC rule. And if they're not going to get 12. If they're not going to get 16 teams in the playoffs, the SEC can then go back on that rule. Rocky P. Is that, is that what's going to happen? I'm not sure. Is it possible? I would think yes, if the Big Ten keeps playing kind of patty cake here in that conversation. As far as who I'm most excited to hear today, excited is not the right word for me because Mike Elko does not inspire.

And I, I think it's going to be interesting to watch him at Florida because look, after you lose, after you lose your great coach, right after Urban Meyer, you know, Alabama struggled for a while, right? Then they end up getting Nick Saban. Texas struggled for a while, Florida struggled for a while. And so it'll be interesting to see if some rolls the guy to kind of bring us one of those sleeping giants back up.
