All right everybody welcomes welcome to Tuesday Night Live stream at On Texas for Football. We are on location. We are at the OTF house in the Greater Tampa, Florida area. SEC Media Days Day 2 Today was the a little bit of a slower day but still news notes and nuggets coming out of SEC Media days. We will run those down for you here on the Tuesday Night Live stream. I am Jeff Howe joined by as Rod Babers has dubbed him, the young prodigy here at on Texas football. He is CJ Vogel. And I'll say this, we'll get to CJ's baller hat here in a minute but CJ's location warrants a super chat or two because I just want you guys to know what CJ's doing for the OTF fam tonight. CJ, you broadcasted from the back patio here at the OTF house last night and you told me that you greatly miscalculated the impact of the mosquitoes here in the state of Florida.

Yes, I did. And it was a total mistake on my part, especially considering there's a pool right next to me, Jeff. So a body of water next to me already. Already in the state of Florida already in the summertime, you'd think those three things added up together. You'd be like, hey, don't, don't sit by the pool in the summer in the heat in Florida and. And complain about mosquitoes. Well, I'm doing it again tonight. And now I got my little Michael Jackson hat as well.

Matt, we definitely need to make sure we cut that and have it for some point down the road. Yeah. So C.J. got a fedora. C.J. myself, Hank, south, we went to the little media party over at, I think benchmark International Arena. It used to be the Ice palace in Tampa is what they used to call but home of the Tampa Bay Lightning. So we were there for the meeting party. Good times had by all. He came back here to do the live stream. So C.J. got a hat. Hank and I, quite frankly, the hats didn't fit. And it was, it was a lost cause. So CJ Made, CJ made. Made up for it by doing. By just wearing the hat and going all out. You kept the hat on most of the night at the media party, which I do applaud. All right, so. Well, go ahead, C.J. sorry, no, I don't need to be

Super chats, as always, jump to the front of the line. I know you guys have questions about the OTF house. We can get to those here in a little bit. We'll talk SEC media days. I was also at the THSCA convention Sunday and Monday. Drove from Houston back home, got up, caught an early flight out of Austin this morning, joined the guys. I was telling C.J. and Hank, by about 2:30ish this afternoon, I was. I hit the wall and really needed to get the second win, so. But we're good to go. C.J. let's go ahead. And I think what our lead topic tonight is going to kind of meld the two events together because Georgia was up today and we talk about Georgia in terms of where Georgia sits in the sec. We just got our media preseason media ballots to fill out. I'm gonna have Georgia as the preseason SEC champion because I can't pick Texas to beat Georgia until I actually see Texas go out and do it. I don't have enough evidence based on what we've seen that leads me to believe this time will be different. I'd love to be proven wrong, but CJ you were asking Raylan Wilson, the Georgia linebacker, about Will Muschamp, and it's going to probably be a Will Muschamp heavy show. So CJ Producer Matt's got the clip. I will let you set this clip up since you asked the question.

Well, of course, everybody wants to know what what does Will Muschamp bring to the table in his second stint as the defensive coordinator at Texas? And well, I thought there was nobody else better to ask than Raylan Wilson, a guy with 75 tackles and spent three years with Georgia. With Will Muschamp in the ranks growing into his role, this is what he had to say this morning. Talk about development and, you know, the coaching staff that goes into that on the defensive side. What did Will Muschamp mean to that before he left this offseason?

Man, that was my dog. He's always coming to practice, smiling, yelling, trying to make people laugh. But he was a serious dude at the same time. He'd be quick to like flip the switch on your rip you if you do some messed up like if you mess up play. He's pretty much just like coach smart. But yeah, he taught, man, he taught me. And really because the young guys, he was there for a year with the young guys. But I say I learned a lot from just little nuggets he put ball like anticipating plays. He's, he's taught me a lot since being at Georgia. So CJ we go back to and thanks to producer Matt for lining that up. Will and NI on rush there says no thud. No play. We got a taste of that in the spring. But I'll go back to Will Muschamp giving the lecture at coaching school. And you know, he's the thsca was happy to have him back in the state of Texas. The Texas high school coaches in general, very happy to have Will much impact. As a matter of fact, I was in on his presentation. Members of the Texas State staff were in there listening, members of the A and M staff were in there listening, members of the SMU staff. So even the college coaches wanted to hear from Will Muschamp. And C.J. we know this and I think we saw this a little bit in the spring for Will Must champ physicality and toughness, those are non negotiables. Like, no matter what position you play, especially like from a DB standpoint. Man Will Muschamps chalk talk at coaching school. There's basically a DB clinic like what he looks for in defensive backs, what he wants in defensive backs. Tackling is a non negotiable said you don't need to be a killer, but you got to be willing to put your face in the fan. We've heard him use that term a lot. And C.J. i think when you look at the new hires, this is where I'm, I'm at with the two new hires on the staff. You know, Will Musham and Jabbar Jalu when so with Sark making those changes, C.J. i think it all goes back to the thing you want to talk about tonight, which is toughness. I think Sark felt like Texas lacked it last year, didn't have it probably as consistently and I'm not saying this is a soft team, but I, I think especially offensively didn't have it as consistently as they needed to have it in 2024. I think that's why we can go back to some of the short yardage issues with this team and the various issues we talked about. But CJ I think that's exact what Sark wanted making these two hires was he wanted in that, that air of toughness and listening to one must champ then knowing his background, listening to Jabar Jaluk yesterday, CJ I am expecting this. I would be very surprised that this isn't a noticeably tougher Texas team. When we see the product on the

field, toughness, intention, attention to detail, intensity. I mean all of these things should go hand in hand. And Jeff, I have to agree with you, right? You don't play for somebody like Will Muschamp and not be fired up every Saturday. He's the one in your locker room, he's the one in your position room. He's the one in your huddle calling plays, getting you amped up to take the field, I think that takes a lot of or at least ignites a lot of energy for your team to take the field. And just like I think, well to Shard Choice was a guy that did that for the offense a few years ago. Not having him on the sideline, I'm not saying that everybody on that offensive side of the ball is very even keel, but I do think that when you have one or two coaches that says, hey, I'm gonna break my face open, headbutting you on your face mask to get you amped up, that goes a long way. Jabar. Jaluk is a guy just like that. So adding both of those guys I think is very important because I, I do think and Jeff, you've heard me talk about this all afternoon. I've been theorizing and sitting here watching back tape from yet from last year and obviously hearing what some of these other players that other schools have to say and they just sit here and say physicality is a non negotiable. Right. Having that intention, intensity is a non negotiable. And I said well that doesn't sound like what we watched a year ago with Texas football.

There's a lot of things that Texas was but I don't know if those are the two things that you would sit here and say of the biggest descriptors of this team, intensity and physicality. How far down the list are they? I would argue pretty far. And that's got to change this year.

Well, and that that brings up another topic that we talked a lot about last year and it's been one of the topic deserves of the off season. I think toughness, intensity. C.J. that shows up in your discipline, that shows up in penalties. Because teams that are physical, teams that play with great intent, teams that play with intensity are usually teams that are pretty disciplined which means they're going to be pretty buttoned up when it comes to penalties and they usually don't beat themselves. I mean how many times do we see and I'm not saying that every team Nick Saban ever coached was just one of those penalty free teams in the country because we saw especially later in his tenure saw some of those Alabama teams deal with penalties.

I would not use the words undisciplined to describe a really good Nick Saban football team. I would not use the word term undisciplined to describe what we've seen from a Kirby Smart team or some of the really good Ohio State teams that we've seen. Those dabble Sony Clemson teams definitely wouldn't would say undisciplined. Would not describe them. So that to me, cj, that's where all that ties in together. Like it's intent, it's intensity, it's it's toughness. I, I think it all leads together. And look, take this however you want, but to your point with the Georgia player saying, hey, that's just who Coach Smart is. He demand like the, the physicality and the toughness that we've seen from Georgia, it starts with Kirby Smart and it trickles down. That's something Sark's got to figure out. He's got to stay true to himself, C.J. but he's got to figure out how does he get that out of this place. I'll borrow a sarcasm you get what you emphasize. Is he emphasizing it the right way though, to get it to come through as consistently as he needs it to?

CJ Vogel

That that's My big question going into year six now, right? Is that something? And again, you know, I think Texas has really strong defensive lines, even some pretty strong offensive lines during his tenure. But again, going back to those number one adjectives of describing the overall play, would those words be physical? Like would that physicality aspect be what is the most noticeable aspect about this team? I don't know. And we had a great question Jeff over on the board and I'd like to get your thoughts on it because I know that we talked about it briefly on, on the walk over. Is Sark being a quarterback from the west coast something that prevents them from really digging deep into being that physically demanding coach? And I don't know if I ever really looked at it like that and I don't know if I totally agree with it, but I do see the points, right? And I especially look at who have been the most successful coaches recently in college football. And there's five I wanted to look at, right? Saban, Smart, Signetti. All three I think fit obviously in that Saban tree. Very much demanding, very much needing physicality, intensity. That intention to detail is paramount to succeed or even just see the field on all three programs. I think Jim Harbaugh is another guy that when you look at his run at Michigan you sit here and you say okay, the trenches are non negotiable. You have to win on that offensive side of the ball. They are going to run the football to win games more than anything. But the one outlier liar that I look at and I say, you know what? I, I don't know if physicality is kind of that prerequisite for success. It might just be, hey, we have more talent and everything else. Everybody else is Ryan Day. And if Sark can find a way to balance that overall success with the offense, with the defense, the overall talent and maximize it without demanding that level of physicality, then I think he could have a run like Ryan Day where he towards the back of the year pieces things together. Now if that's the case, Will Muscamp cannot miss, right? He has to be a Jim Knowles and a Chip Kelly for Ryan Day this year for Steve Sarkeesian.

That that's a hundred, that's 100% where I'm at with this team. Like if the must champ hire does what it's supposed to do, this team will get to where we expect them to be. Like if Texas falls short of X, falls short of expectations, it's not going to be because they lack talent. And I own ref share brought up the Other coach that I was thinking about. When you talk about physicality and probably because he's an ex offensive lineman man, say what you want about his game management. And I haven't been a fan of the way Mario Crystal balls called games and managed games and he's cost Miami some games in his tenure. You can use tough and physical to describe the way Miami plays football. I mean it is, it wouldn't be

smart smart probably the best way.

Yeah, I heard, you know, I heard Bill. It was the cow. The Dallas Cowboys did an in house documentary a few years ago and I haven't been able to find it on, you know, out in the out online because you got to really hunt for it. But it was basically chronicling Bill Parcel's first year as the Cowboys head coach. And he said something so this, and this was just a couple of years ago. He said I don't care what era of football you're in, if you can run the football really well, you can stop the run and you don't beat yourself. I don't care what area you're in that wins a lot of football games. And at the end of the day that's what we're talking about. Like I, I think it goes back to. And when I talk about being physical, to me it's consistent physicality. Like we talk about Texas in 2024. I wouldn't call that a soft football team, but you didn't have it consistently enough. Like that's the point I want to keep hammering home. And that's what, that's what we're talking about. It can't just be. Yeah, we run for, you know, 300ish yards against a and M in the regular season finale and then against Clemson in a playoff game. But against Ohio State in the Cotton bowl or Georgia in the SEC championship game, you're against Arizona State in the Peach Bowl. Your run game was non existent. So that it Bo that's what it boils down to. That's. That's where I go with the cj. It's not about being hot in the soft or not. Yeah, you just, I just need, I just need you to play. I just need you to play at A level and we can get into this too. I think for Sark. We, we've heard him, you know, the reasons him reason why he changed coordinators, why he made the change from PK to Will Muscamp. Well, if it's going to do everything, if you're going to get the full benefits of it, if will must have higher hits. We better see a much better, much different, more consistently physical product on offense because there's no reason for you to be lacking on offense now if Sark doesn't have to worry about anything going on defensively, like hiring much Champ took care of all those issues. There is no excuse now.

Yeah, yeah, I completely agree. And really what started all of this draft is Georgia was up today and folks remember exactly what Kirby Smart had to say after beating Texas in Athens this year. Saying, hey, if you're looking for nil, don't come here because we're here to play physical, physical, smash mouth football. And we got a quote today from Drew Bobo that really inspired this and I know we have an AD read coming up on the back end of this, but I did want to get to this because this is exactly what I'm hoping Texas starts to adopt, he said. I think Coach Smart harps on that physicality and it does it so much that it trickles down to everyone else. As an offensive lineman, you don't want to be known as soft. We want to be known as one of the most physical units and I think that is one of our goals is physicality. Now Jeff, we just talked about that offensive line but we've also talked about where it needs to stem from. Who's the guy that's going to be in charge and not just for the discipline, making sure that you know your exes and O's, but that you have that intensity and that really that fire to sit there and say that guy across the line of scrimmage is not going to beat me. Regardless of who he is, regardless of the jersey that he wears, regardless of how talented or how many years of football he has played, I'm going to go be the one that inflicts the pain, if you will. Kirby Smart and Georgia do that. Texas and Steve Sarkeesian. That needs to be what happens this year. There's no more excuses for why this team can't gain a yard against Oklahoma four straight times on the one yard line or why they go to Ohio State in the cotton ball to tie the game up and can't figure out a way to do that even in a jumbo set. So that's really where all of this started today and I hope, and I think that's going to be what I end up asking him on Thursday is do you think this is a team that can do that? Because we don't know.

Yeah, well, no, we don't know. We won't know until, I mean, look, game two, we're going to find out. And for better or worse, that's going to set the tone for that. We'll get answers on that. That's going to set the tone for what we can expect the rest of the way. Based on what Texas does against Ohio State, third time may be a charm for Steve Sarkeesian against Ryan Day. We'll see. Seems very excited about Whitten in the Oklahoma tight end room. Can y' all educate us on who is in Oklahoma's tight end room? Hey, I think beyond we were talking about this before we went on the air kind of as a staff, we were just chopping it up and bouncing ideas off each other and just talking about things we've heard the last couple of days, man, everybody, even non Texas, non OU media are excited about Oklahoma's prospects. Like this defensive front I think is. Is legit. It has been the last few years. My question is tight end room aside, like with Oklahoma, I think it comes down to two things. One, how much better is that offensive line, which they were. It was a young group last year, but it was young and not very good when it needed to be. And does Jama tear take care of the football when it matters like that to me is going to really determine. We talk about, oh, you's got that formula of a just ball control. Special teams play really good defense. If you get into a shootout like last year with Ole Miss, you may be in trouble. But they've got a formula. I think it's maybe they got a little bit more margin for error than they had last year, but there's a formula oh you can use to win games. Hank. I just. We'll see how far that takes them.

Yeah, it's interesting. I go back to just the how brutal their schedule is to start the season and I was talking to CJ about this yesterday and you know, you, you defense is one thing. They're Gonna stay in games with defense. CJ's whole point is, you know, a race to 21 points is, you know, with Oklahoma games that's gonna, you know, put you in good position if you can get there first. But I, I just think about Oklahoma teams of the past and just the playmakers they have at skill positions. And I'm not trying to knock like Parker Livingston or the wide receivers. They added their running backs, they, I just don't think they, I think there's a drop off in skill talent even from last year with the, with the receivers. It's just, I don't know who the go to guys are. I think it's going to require John Matier playing, having to play too much hero ball which in turn, you know, can he stay healthy through the whole course of the season? Can he be accurate? Can you know, he do everything that's needed to be done? And I know he's comfortable with Ben Arbuckle and he's in that.

This is his fourth year in that system so you know, you would imagine he could. But I just struggle to see OU having the offensive firepower needed to through the course of this schedule to, you know. Yeah, not, not hit a few bumps along the way.

Yeah. If you look at OU's tight end room, they did bring in some, some fresh blood from the transfer portal. Hayden Hansen from Colorado, Rocky Beers from Colorado State. Hank seems to be the guy that they're really excited about. But. Yeah, I mean you didn't. Jared Cannock was a tremendous athlete. I just, it never really took off for him at tight end like I think they hoped it would. But we'll see what happens. But I, you know, I'm, I'm less concerned about how good ohu's tight end room is. To your point, Hank, if they, if they're not markedly better at wide receiver and running back, I, I really, you could have, you know, you can go back to the 80s and transport Keith Jackson on this Oklahoma team and it's not going to matter if you're not Markly better at running back and wide receiver. Yeah, exactly.

In the offensive line, you know, I think there's only room for like, you know, those are some high upside guys with Fasusi and, and Ryan Fogy, like they, they've got guys and you know, you can only, it's only up from where they were. But I, yeah, I just struggle to see these guys having much success if they get into a shootout sort of situation where they need to start scoring at will. I Just it's going to put a lot of pressure on the defense if they, if they can't, if they can't get it going. And maybe, I mean the, the, the receiver they added from Syracuse, his name's escaping right now. They've got some guys. I just, if Parker Livingston is your one, I don't know if that's enough to, to you know, win this league.

Yeah, I, I, like I said I think it's the margin for error last year for them was razor thin. I think it is just that offensive line is going to be better. Just how much better are they? And I think you know, a healthier material will, will help too. And Il Ripster said Jermaine Gresham was their best tight end ever. I mean you go back like you gotta go back like Keith Jackson was really good way back in the day for oh you. Mark Andrews was a really, really good tight ends and all pro in the NFL. So. Oh, you had some good tight ends. But again like when Mark Andrews is on offense with like CD Lamb and Rodney Anderson at the time, like when he's like one of like seven legit options you've got, it's a totally different story. Talking about the tight end. But hey, I want to get back to this. Yes, OU sucks. He pose this question to CJ but CJ if you're just joining us, app is toweling off after jumping into the pool. He and Bobby decided to go Dan landing style into the pool here at the OTF house. Yes. Oh, you suck. Says Georgia media guy says he's not sure Texas can win a phone booth fight with Georgia or SEC rivals. What say you? Look, I'm. Texas has won the last two games. They won the last two games against Oklahoma, Texas A and M. So I, I don't, I don't think it's like an across the board thing but like Georgia specifically. Hank, if we're just talking about just Georgia, yeah, that's a fair take because Texas hasn't done it against Georgia. Like the running game in the three games against Georgia has been non existent to the point last year. Hank, you go back to the game in Athens, we talked about it a lot. There was a point like in the second half of the game, maybe late in the first half Sart just stopped trying to run the ball. Like they weren't even the illusion of trying to run the football. They just ditched it like weren't even trying to run it. And that's making yourself one dimensional against the Kirby smart defense. Like you're Asking for a tough day at the office. So right now, look, there's a, like, can Texas win a phone booth fight with Georgia? Are they. Yes, Texas is capable of doing that. Will they though? Until they do, I don't have the confidence to say they will.

Yeah. And just go back to your personnel. I mean, Texas couldn't run the ball really well against many teams last year, except for for Oklahoma and Texas A M. They, they weren't, they just couldn't find success on the ground. They go out, they address the running back room, they get some road grader type guys on the offensive line, whether it's, you know, Lawrence Seymour even or, you know, the, the additions they made there, you know, obviously we'll see on Cole Hudson, I don't know how much you want to, you factor him into that. They, they addressed the needs on defense. They went out and added physicality. Whether, you know, HAVOC players or Sheen Biles, I think is probably going to be one of the more physical linebackers or kind of hit you in the mouth linebackers in the sec. They're bringing back, you know, pretty strong, you know, a pretty strong defensive front. And then Will Mustamp obviously too. I mean, he, he's going to challenge these guys. I think, you know, I, I think he's going to be a pretty good pregame speech motivator type guy in terms of, hey, this is, this is what these guys were saying about you guys last year. Is that, is that okay with you? Is that acceptable to you? So, you know, he's, he's going to

and hype those guys up. But I mean, we've seen Texas play Georgia in, in tough, in tough games, obviously, you know, the SEC championship two years ago, we know they can do it. It's, you know, and, and I think they've set themselves up personnel wise, both players and coaches to, to get back to that in 2026.

It. Can you do it in those games when you have to do it the short yardage goal line that, those type of situations. And taking it a step further, like Texas has to play better situational football. Like you can go to the losses against Georgia and loss against Ohio State or you know, into the half, in the half defense against Ohio State. You in the cotton ball, you gave up that long touchdown to Trayvon Henderson. Otherwise you pretty much controlled that first half as well as you could have. Sorry, didn't mean to bring that up. But just saying like situational football has got to be much better. But Hank, we're I want to get to Justin's super chat here in a second, but this, this is kind of the, the other way to maybe look at the Texas offense this year. Rex St. Charles asked to say, was 2019 LSU physical and disciplined or were they just an incredibly talented offense? Now? What, what I don't if I would like the physical is not the first word that comes. They definitely weren't soft. Like physical is not the first word that comes to mind. But Hank, incredibly talented on offense. Like, we're talking about maybe the single greatest season a college football team has ever had on offense. Like, if you're that historically good, that's going to cover up a ton of deficiencies.

Yeah, I would, I mean, just probably incredibly talented, incredibly efficient. I mean, Joe Burrow didn't make mistakes with the football. Again, someone just commented. Two hall of Fame wide receivers probably right. Yeah, we had a great tight end with Thaddeus Moss. I'm sorry, I was thinking of Irv Different Smith. Yeah.

But yeah, that, that, that was just kind of a magical year. Everything clicked right to where, you know, it even covered up Edwards on being your head coach. The fact that, you know, you can, you can, you know, they had the, the right guys calling the plays and whatnot. But yeah, I wouldn't describe that team as, it's silly. You know, they had a lot of NFL guys on that defense too, but

of those games too. Like, they, they didn't, I mean, they, once they got in their groove and in the back half of the season, they really took care of business.

know, they, they got into a shootout with Bama. They couldn't stop devonte Smith to save, to save their life in that game either. And they, they, luckily, you know, just, they outlasted Alabama injured to a Tonga Valoa. So, but yeah, that, that LSU team, a blend of talent, just efficiency and just, you know, it just goes to show when you have an experienced quarterback that's good at taking care of the ball and, and you know, making all the, the right throws and decisions goes a long way.

Now you also have to look at the art when we talk about Texas and Nil Richer says Coleman is Chase, Wingo is Jefferson, Bishop is Marshall. I, I, I would love for that to happen, but that's something you can't plan on happening or or think is going to happen. Expect to happen. Daniel says replicating Joe Burrow. He was, it was and still is insane. Yeah, Joe Burrow was just unconscious playing quarterback that year. And like I said, we're talking about a historically great offense, but similar to Texas. Like if you want to say could Texas in 2026 be LSU in 2019? Well, Texas has some really good pieces. Like, let's not kid ourselves. I mean Arch Manning is a, a guy that's capable of going 1:1 overall. Trevor Goosby's a first round talent at tackle. We talk about Cam Coleman at wide receiver. Ryan Wingo is, for whatever it's worth, has been mocked late first round in some of these mock drafts. Even with the talents you got a running back. But you know, at the end of the day the, you've got to look at the art, the trajectory that LSU offense went on. Like the LSU team that Texas played that September. It's not the same LSU team I saw at the end of the year. And here point, Hank, that LSU team. And maybe for Texas, I don't know, maybe it would be like maybe the OU game or some, maybe it's, maybe it's a Florida game given what happened in Gainesville last year. But I think once LSU beat Alabama that year, I think at that point that felt like they probably felt like they could line up against an NFL team and go have success. Like, like their confidence was through the roof at that point. So you look at them, they destroyed Georgia in the SEC Championship game, beat Oklahoma, like they stole something in the Peach Bowl.

Seven touchdown passes in that first half against them, maybe six or seven in that first half against Oklahoma.

And that that title game against Clemson was not as close as the final score. Even the final score. And again, the final score wasn't really that close. So yeah, could Texas do that? Thoughts on his coaching style? Really excited about that hire. C.J. that bleeds into what we've been talking about with physicality and everything else. I love Jabar. You know, he was talking about basically going through kind of how he coaches the run game at Texas from a back standpoint, and he was talking about inside and outside zone and basically like, what's. What you're reading and what the reads for the backs are. And he showed a clip from spring practice. It's Michael Terry running the football. And he reads it right, but, you know, the linebacker scraped. I. I apologize. I forget which linebacker it was, but the linebacker scrapes it, ends up in the hole. Michael Terry read it right, but the linebacker just made a good play. And cj, we're talking about toughness. Jabar Luke said, hey, sometimes you just gotta go be tougher than that guy. Like, sometimes you just gotta go try to pop that guy in the chin. I love Justin. One thing I loved about the clinic, cj, you and I were talking about this today. Every analogy Jabar Jaluk makes to playing running back, it's either a fist fight or a boxing match. Like, it's all about, you're gonna punch, you're gonna jab, you're gonna go for the chin, whatever. Like, it's just. And Jabar Jaluk said that that's. He said that's the only way I know is just how to do it as tough as possible. He was talking about we're going to be the most violent runners you've ever seen. Said, hey, if you. One thing, another thing I like too. He was talking about arm tackles. The guys aren't going to tackle us with one arm. He said, if a guy tackles you with One arm. You're not going to play at the University of Texas, and you'll be standing over by me on the sideline. I'll get you a ball cap and a clipboard, too. So it's. It's just that toughness that again. And granted, Trey Wisner was banged up last year, but you overhaul the running back room in terms of personnel. They're overhauling it with a mindset, too.

CJ Vogel

They absolutely are. And again, it goes back to just how much do you want it? And I think you're going to see that with Jabar Luke this year for all the reasons you just mentioned there, Jeff. And it starts with your position room. Right? It. It was one of those things. I think Brennan Marion said it best when it came to blocking on the perimeter. It's how much or how well you block or the effort that you show on the perimeter outside that basically exemplifies how much you love your teammates. And when you word it like that or when you phrase it like that kind of person just puts into perspective, oh, I. I should probably try a little bit more, right. To show that my. Show my teammates that I care for them.

To show that I'm putting my all into this. And for Jabar Jaloop to emphasize, this is a street fight, this is a. A war between you and the guy that is trying to bring you down. That's something that Jeff, I think Shark might have taken for granted earlier in his tenure at Texas when Bijon and Roshan were guys that you could just hand the rock to, yeah, they'd figure it out. But now that you have someone in that room emphasizing, hey, I don't care how talented you are, because you're facing that type of talent at a similar level in the sec, you need to be the one that does that, goes the extra mile, that does the extra work to gain that yard. That's something that I. And very excited to see how it plays out this fall.

Yeah, I. I'll go back to my high school football days from ancient times, and I had a running back who, coincidentally was my cousin, and he was. I was fond of complaining about how things aren't blocked properly. It wasn't blocked this way. And finally coach told him, hey, some point, you got to go be an athlete. It's not going to be blocked. Right? Every play, you got to go be an athlete and go make a play. And I think that's where you are at, the running back. It's not going to be blocked. Like we talked about it. C.J. some of the best running backs we've seen in Texas, like Cedric Benson's the first one that comes to mind. For me, that man, if it's, if it's third and two, everybody in, everybody in the house, all 11 guys on defense, everybody on that opposing sideline, everybody knows 32 is getting the ball. Yet you have 100% confidence that he's going to find a way to get you those two yards. You need to move the chains like that. And granted, Cedric, Vince is one of the most productive running backs in the history of college football. But that's what we're talking about. C.J. like do, do you have that wherewithal to, hey, when it gets tough, can you, can you get behind your pads? Can you get downhill? And can you go attack the line of scrimmage and get those 2,3 1 yards to convert those short yardage situations? Keep the chain.

CJ Vogel

Well, I know that we're kind of setting this up to, to be interesting, right? You mentioned Cedric, you mentioned, I mean I go to Jamal Charles, Deontay Foreman, we mentioned him in his physicality. Like those guys are all, you know, in line for why Texas is so special as rbu. But let's not forget Hollywood smothers, Raleigh Brown, first team all conference running backs from where they came from. Derek Cooper, a former five star. Michael Terry, a lot of talent. Again, another very highly heralded recruit coming in for the position, James Simon. I think we saw some positive moments

from him this year.

So it's not like this group can't take that leap or what we're even asking is outrageous for them to become guys in this conversation for four or five years from now, we look back and say, hey man, Bijan, Jamal, Cedric, Deontay, Raleigh Hollywood, that tandem like those guys have the talent, Jeff, but how badly do you want it? And how much can Jabar Jaluke push these guys ultimately is going to make or break or at least, you know, help elevate this room to its ultimate ceiling.

Hey, we're. We're 46 days away from kickoff as of today. We're. You, you and Hank and I were talking about it on our walk from the, from the hotel, from the venue to the media party. 46 Underrated number in Texas football history. Like you got Dusty Renfro, Malik Jefferson, Joseph osai. But another 46 Roosevelt leaks kind of gets lost in that running back tradition of Texas. But my dad left this mortal earth believing with every fiber of his being that Earl Campbell, Chris Gilbert, all the great running backs that Texas ever had he thought Roosevelt Leaks was the most talented running back he ever saw play at Texas. So that's the kind of stuff you're talking about, though. Those guys can, can you get behind your pads when you need to? Those guys could. I don't know if Nil and Rev share. CJ was in the room with me in Houston yesterday, but he points this out and we can talk about this. He said, love The Derek Cooper 60 yard touchdown run right up the middle. Jabarji Jaluke had a lot of, a lot of spring cut ups, as is. When you're giving a clinic talk, you're gonna have cut ups so you can show the drills translate. And just a little inside zone to the left. C.J. cooper reads it and then boom, hits the hole, accelerates out of it and yeah, and he finishes the drill because Jaluk wants his guys. He's like, finish the drill. He's like, how are you gonna be comfortable scoring in a game if you don't practice, if you don't do it in practice during a live period? So Derek Cooper burned off on the defense, but yeah, those are the kinds of plays, C.J. that I see him. And it's hard for me to. I know I've just talked about Sark and Mindset and everything else, but. And you see that it's, it's hard to kind of temper my expectations for a freshman running back. There's been seen some good ones at Texas, C.J. but Derek Cooper's got a chance to be.

I want to say he's just as good as any of it. He's got a chance to make an impact.

He's got a real chance. And I think that's all you could ask for again, considering the room that he's walking into with the talent up at the top. But I posted on, on Texas football last weekend on Friday for the, the happy Friday post that I do each weekend, just kind of accumulating some nuggets from. Throughout the week of talking to sources, you know, around the team, around the sec. And one conversation really stuck out to me. It was every week, basically someone new watches Derek Cooper run for the first time and just goes, whoa, he's faster than I thought. And you know, I don't, I don't know if that's a surprise. I mean, he came in with round 107 speed in the 100 meter, so verifiably very quick, very fast straightaway speed. But then you see him move in workouts, then you see him cut, then you See him change direction and every so often someone else will just go, hey, that's a little faster than what I thought. So, Jeff, again, I think it's lofty to sit here and say, hey, he's running for a thousand yards. But at the end of the day, I, I, I would be shocked if he didn't have at least a sizable role in this offense, given how Texas coaches, players, sources, whatever you want to talk about, have talked about him in the spring and summer, building up for, for what we're expecting in his freshman season.

And we've seen it the last few years. I mean, 23, 24 were playoff runs where you're running back group at the end of the year looked a lot different than it did at the start of the year.

CJ Vogel

Great point.

23 was the Jonathan Brooks injury. 24, you had CJ Baxter injured in the preseason. Christian Clark, we didn't see him at all because he had the Achilles injury in camp. Trey Weiser was a thousand man. That, that would have been, I don't know what's crazier. Like, if you'd have told me in 2024, like, hey, Gunner Helm's gonna catch, you know, what is it, 40 plus balls, 50 plus balls? That or Trey Wiser rush for a thousand yards. I'm like, both of them sound pretty crazy to me, given the track records. But Texas ended up doing both. Yes. You're gonna need all these backs to get you through a season. No, no, C.J. i don't, I don't mean to put you on the spot. Is, is Jaden ball with the Florida group? Because tomorrow we get Ole Miss Florida some good. Jaden Ball with the Florida group, that's one thing. If I get a chance to ask him tomorrow, I want to ask him about Jabar Jaluk and just what he brings the table as a running backs coach. Really setting the mindset and the attitude on that side of the ball because we've heard Sark, Sark has talked about it. Like, one of the first things Jabar Jalute did when he got on the staff at Texas was straight up told everybody in the room, hey, when we were at Florida, we didn't think you guys could beat us because we didn't think you were physical enough. We thought we could go out and be more physical than you. Like that. To me, C.J. that if that's not like to sound barbaric, but man, that's, that's like attacking your manhood. You know, that's personal.

No, I, I 100 agree I 100 agree. It's like playing basketball and pointing to, you know, shooting guard or small forward saying, hey, we're going to switch on a you and pick on you every single time that we have the possession of the basketball.

Right.

CJ Vogel

And look, I, I hate to say it, but I went through, you know, kind of the grind that was watching the all 22 once more of that Texas Florida game last week. And, and Jeff, let's not forget for two and a half quarters, Florida didn't have really any explosive plays. That first full possession took off about eight minutes. I think their longest play was about 12 yards. And they would just play after play, game three, game five, game two, first down. And they would do that for eight full minutes. And that really set the tone for the first three or four possessions. And then by then it was 17 7. It's like sitting around saying, what's going on? So I'm with you on that. I do think again, I think Jabar Jalute could go a long way for what this room could do. And I think a lot of it is just a physicality. Do you want this? Do you care that this guy in front of you is preventing you from what you want, what the team want, what your school wants? And ultimately, again, to emphasize what you want, that's got to be the biggest piece of it.

Yeah, sometimes, sometimes you get a no comment. Sometimes you get an answer that you hear and you're like, all right, that's kind of a just a canned, you know, answer, just to kind of generic whatever, but don't know if you don't ask the question. Yeah. So we get tomorrow is Florida Ole Miss. Who else is tomorrow? Mississippi State. No, Mississippi State's on. The Aggies are tomorrow. I'll give you an interesting Texas A. M nugget. Elko I don't know if it, I'm not going to call it reluctance or he's trying to like he knows how big the Texas game is right to that fan base and he's lost his first two. I just think it's, it's interesting that when he's talked about he did this at the THSCA convention, his press conference there, talked about the tough games A M had last year, he's like, oh well that's tough game to Miami, didn't play well for a half against South Carolina, didn't play well for a quarter against lsu, didn't mention Texas, didn't mention the game they lost in Austin. And when he's been asked about Texas, he's kind of, kind of danced around it a little bit. Coming off a year where they went to playoff. C.J. i just think it's interesting, Mike Elko maybe feeling the heat a little bit about the last two results against Texas. I don't think that shocked anybody, but how he's handled it so far is interesting.

Well, I. I agree. And I wish we got to hear, you know, Brent Venables in a very similar setting.

Talking to the high school coaches in this state. I know it's not apples to apples, but at some point, you have to beat Texas. And, Jeff, you, You, Rod, Marcus, Bobby, Jerry, I mean, I've heard all the stories of what it was like for Mac very early in that tenure, not being able to beat Stoops in Oklahoma.

And so to know going into a season that this was basically, if not a national championship, at least win this game. That's where things are right now for A and M. Because, look, you're going back home. You're hosting Texas for the second time in three years at home. If you can't beat Texas with what you expect to be a very talented defense, a senior quarterback, one that you expect to make a jump, and a group of wide receivers that is, on paper, very talented, if you can't beat Texas, then now, Jeff, when will you.

It's like, I. I don't want to be like a wet blanket here, but at some point, at some point, Texas is going to lose to. To Oklahoma, and at some point, they're going to lose to a man. Right? It's gonna happen at some point. I. I feel, and I don't know, man, I could be reading it wrong. I feel like the loss to A M is more likely to come before a lot of the lost. Oh, I just feel like. Because I just. It's that style OU plays with. I do trust John Matier more than I trust Marcel Reed, for whatever that's worth. But I just. I just think Texas is a better football team than. Than Oklahoma. Even though OU is better, I think Texas is really good. I think Texas is better than Oklahoma. And plus, I'm ready for Texas to go on one of these runs against Oklahoma. Like, you look at the series, it's a series of runs. I'm ready for Texas CJ to go in. Hey, go in five out of seven. Go in seven out of nine. Whatever it is, go rattle off one like, oh, you's done. But A M is interesting, essentially. Yeah. Yeah. But A M is interesting, too, because I think A M. A M to me, is closer. Like, man, if they can just. If Marcel Reed just stops turning the ball over in those games. Like they've been good enough along both lines of scrimmage to hang with Texas the last two years. Like they're and I think Elko Elko's a coach that values the trenches. So I just, I don't know. I just feel like not saying Texas will lose either one this year. I'm not predicting that, but I just feel like A M is better positioned if some if one of those two is going to be Texas this year. And maybe it's because the games in College Station, maybe that's because I view it that way. I just feel like A M is better positioned to do that than Oklahoma is.

See, I that's interesting and I disagree. I do think Oklahoma is a better program and I know folks in the chat are going to have a different they're going to take this one way. I think the when you go ceiling for ceiling offense and defense between Oklahoma and A and M, I think the highest ceiling of all four of those facets of the ball is going to be Oklahoma's defense. I think that right now is going to be the one that you look at and say it's the most nationally elite. Regardless of style, regardless of who they play, they will carry the water for the offense. A M has been very good. Now they're going to be without a Cassius Howell, Shemar Stewart, Schmar Turner, right, who is going to be their money getting pass rusher on the edge that my Calcos had every year and without that level of defense. And I know that you said for multiple years who might beat Texas first or what, who's the biggest threat? I I look at Oklahoma as a bigger threat this year and I look at him as a bigger threat further on because I think Bo Bentley at the quarterback position is the most talented prospect on either team. We talked about Brady Hart for A M coming in from or flipping late from Michigan in that 2025 class. I believe he's not Bo Bentley for me. Additionally, this year for A M, Marcus Marcel reed against top 35 defenses, which include Notre Dame, LSU, Texas, Missouri, Auburn and Miami. So some great teams in there, some not so great teams in there. Top 35 is six of the seven or 13 games that they played. Six touchdowns, eight interceptions, 59 completion, four extra fumbles in there. He just doesn't elevate his play when they absolutely need him to. He's not the engine of that offense. And that's why this year, specifically for all you can say about John Matiere and why he won't be the reason why Oklahoma succeeds. I know at least he's going to put up a fight when it comes to playing his best football against big time opponents.

Yeah, I just, to me, I feel like, I'm not even gonna say the ceiling is higher because I don't know how high your ceiling is with Marcel Reed as your quarterback, but not high. I, I just feel like, I don't know, I just, like I said. Oh, it's just that formula OU has for winning games. I just think it leaves you too small of a margin for error where. Yeah, if you, if you end up giving up a non offensive touchdown or you know, Texas goes on a run or whatever. If you get down 14 points, 10, 14 points. Like I don't like your chances of coming back. Fair, fair, like. And I, I just feel like, I just feel like A M could sustain a run, a run Texas would have a game a little bit better than Oklahoma could. But that's just, I don't know, that's just how I see it. I'm not saying I'm right. That's just kind of how I see it.

I think either way, if you're a Texas fan, you have to feel at least good that of the three teams, the biggest X factor catalyst amongst all of them is the Texas quarterback. Right. It is Arch Manning. In comparison to who the biggest playmaker, X factor game breaker that we talk about pretty often that resides in Austin. And when you list the 10 top or the top 10amongst all three teams, Texas probably has five or six.

Yeah, no, no question. I mean I think if you, if you're looking at those three quarterbacks and you don't just without hesitation take Arch first, then you're either a hater or I would seriously question your football knowledge. If you would just take, if you would find a reason to, to take Jama Tear or Marcel Reed over Arch at this point.
