All right, well, happy belated birthday to Jackson. All right, C.J. you were there. SEC media days today. Got a chance to put out a lot of great nuggets, by the way. C.J. was there, though, and C.J. i want to start talking about Oklahoma first. What was the kind of the nugget that stood out to you? Gathering intel, if you will, on Oklahoma? A couple of things I want to ask you about. What stood out to you first and foremost?

CJ Vogel

Well, first off, Marco, I completely agree. I wish I was out with. On a yacht with Jerry. We'd be having a heck of a time. But we are at. What is it? Casa. OTF is what we're calling it down here in Tampa. We're having a good time. So glad to be bringing you everything that we can from. From SEC media days. Oklahoma went first today. It was Oklahoma, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Missouri. I'm not sure if that's the most exc. Group of four SEC schools, but that was who we started with today at. At media days. The thing that really stood out to me was Venables talking about his offensive line, saying he felt like there were nine offensive linemen that he felt Oklahoma could play winning football with. And, you know, you hear about it all the time. You'd like to be in that 7, 8 range in case you, you know, go down with injury or things just don't work out with the original starting five like what we saw a year ago. But nine is a lot, right? Especially considering what we saw a year ago with Oklahoma, where that offensive line was not Very good. They're bottom five. And a lot of rushing metrics. 29 sacks allowed, ranked 88th in the country, which 29th is actually much improved from a year ago when they allowed. Or two years ago when they allowed 50. So the offensive line for two years has not been great. So to hear that, that's kind of the strength or at least something that they feel comfortable with at the moment. That, to me, was one of those kind of alarm bells that you hear throughout the offseason. Oh, okay. If. If that's a way that they feel good about their football team, I might need to reassess strengths, weaknesses, what to project them as. But, I mean, they're just like Texas, just like lsu, just like Alabama. If you give them a run game and take the pressure off of the quarterback from needing to put on the cape every single down and play, I think that that could go a long way for them.

Rye Babers

Well, also, coach the complimentary football element, right? You give them a run game with a Venables defense, too. You can control the game. That would give Oklahoma the ability to control the game in most of the games they play. Maybe not that one. They gotta play Georgia early on, but in most of the games they play, that would give them the ability to control the game. That's a dangerous combination. I did not. I'm with tj. That's something I didn't expect. I expected him to be able to make plays because John Mattier can make plays. He can put on the cape at times. As CJ Said, he can play hero ball, but that was part of the problem last year. Too much hero ball for him. You can give him a run game, then allow, you know, John Mattier to have to just make plays in critical moments rather than having to put the offense on his shoulders and be the identity of the run game. Yeah, I'll admit that's a scary proposition.

Yeah, I got. I got a couple thoughts on that. First of all, if his assessment is accurate, then Oklahoma is going to be much better than I thought they were going to be.

CJ Vogel

I agree.

Coach Bob Shipley

And second, secondly, the second thing is, on the other side, what are you expecting to say? What, What? I mean, what did our coaches say last year at this time about our offensive line? They didn't say we suck. I mean, you can't say that as a head coach. You know, you. You're hoping for the best. But that was one of the most surprising things that I, That I read about today, was that assessment. And not just like seven, but as you said, nine.

CJ Vogel

Nine. So Coach, I was going to ask you that because I'm with you. You know, it's SEC media days. You're the head coach of a program. You're there to, you know, pump some sunshine into what you've done all off season, get your fans excited, make a headline or two, you know, stir the pot. But you know, you could have just said, hey, we feel good, right? We feel improved from a year ago, to be that specific. I think that's when I kind of. Hank was sitting to my right and I kind of looked at him, I was like, you heard that too, right? Like nine, nine, nine's a different level. Right. So I don't know what we would have classified Texas as a year ago when it came to the too deep. I think, you know, you look at it and you're like, oh, Daniel Cruz, Nick Kibble, like you feel pretty good about what these guys could do. But ultimately we were wrong. Right? Texas was five deep and five deep only, basically. So that's interesting, especially now that you're not having to start true freshmen on the offensive line for Oklahoma. So again, I won't go too much further into it, but to hear that from Venables and to know that, okay, if they are improved in that run game with older players now in the trenches, that's something I think should at least be circled and say, okay, we'll come back to this down the road.

No, I'm with you because I'm with. I'm trying to think the last time we would have even said Texas was nine deep on an O line like when, when I mean, I was just. That's so for him to say that. Is he saying that he has nine starting caliber offensive linemen that he believes can start? Is that basically he said winning.

a little 9, 6 game. Yeah, you got a good kicker. Just get to the 40, right?

Yeah. Maybe it is somebody says 20. I don't know. 2005. 06 is what Sandman said. Maybe. Yeah. Maybe around that time you got during Texas's heyday, like the. The prime of max run, the apex, the zenith of it. Yeah, maybe you were. Because I gotta go find how many guys they put in the league during that time. But you probably got to the point where you believed you probably had 7, 8, 9 starting caliber offensive linemen. But it's been a while. But I would say these days it's tougher to do that. That's the whole point is the con. Remember the. The conversation just also even Sark talked about it that nobody can kind of. Everybody's having offensive line issues with their O line. Right. With the modern age of college football, because you can't really stockpile a ton of talent. You're going to develop old linemen. Those guys want to leave. They're not playing. And you're trying to develop them and you know, through their. Through your forum system, they don't want to stay around for the forms and they're trying to get paid. They're trying to play. And so it's kind of. It's thrown all the old line development out of whack in college football. And there's been multiple complaints about it from. From coaches. And for him to say that in this era of college football, that is quite impressive. And considering the unique approach to talent acquisition that Jim Nagy and. And Right. And that Venables have adopted, we. They've basically gone the value system.

CJ Vogel

Yep. That moneyballed it.

Rye Babers

Yeah, they've Moneyballed it. So to say that in the Moneyball era is also. It's wild, man. That's a wild. Now.

CJ Vogel

Now the thing I will add and Katy 35, I am the best mentions it. Who are the running backs? Right. That's great. You know, to have an offensive line that like could be deep, to feel like could be an impactful unit on the field. But you also need some running backs. You also need a running game. And that's something that. With Oklahoma, I'm not sold on the running back position by itself. Right. You know, there's some talent there, but I think they returned basically everybody from a year ago without DeMarco Murray, their position coach. So maybe that's the change because that unit last year, and I know the offensive line was young, it was inexperienced, they couldn't really get a push a whole lot of. But that offensive line or that running game a year ago was not good in that unit. Just as Texas saw A year ago, when you don't have the horses in the stable, it doesn't matter what the race is, you're not going to win. And that's the difference this year is Texas thinks that they do have horses in the stable that can go the distance. And with Oklahoma not having made that change through the portal, I don't know if I sit here and say the running game, even with an improved offensive line, is going to be super threatening because of the lack of game changers at the running back position.

No, that's good. It's a good conversation. Also believe. And I think, C.J. you had this note, too. I'm not sure what the Oklahoma player was. Oh, Taylor. Taylor. Taylor 1. Taylor win.

Taylor 1. The. The Edge defender from Oklahoma. Apparently some Longhorn fans are upset with his comments that Texas OU is basically. I don't want to misquote the man, but I'll paraphrase. It's basically kind of just any. They're going to treat it like they treat every other game. Yeah, that's basically what he said. And some longboard fans took offense to this. Coach, you're a coach. What's your thoughts about it? Because that's. That seems to me that's coming from Venables.

Coach Bob Shipley

You better not approach it like it's ever any other game. Rod, you're the only one of us three that played there.

I mean, you.

You can't. Can you approach it like it's just another game?

No, I don't think so. I don't. No. Yeah.

I mean, I've been on the sidelines for four or five of those games, you know, and was in the press box in one game. But it ain't. It ain't like any other game. There's like no other game.

Exactly.

CJ Vogel

But, Rod, do you admit that in the locker room, it's like, this is like, this is what we've been waiting for. This is kind of like, you know, we. We've had this circled.

Rye Babers

We had to because Oklahoma won the national title in 2000. So in addition to being a rival, they were also, at times the standard of college football. They had become quickly the standard. So that was for us, it was, hey, that's it. Your rival is the best team in college football. You gotta do something about it. So for us, it was circled and talked about, discussed, and, you know, we couldn't beat em at the time. Yeah, it was talked about and discussed. So I. It's. So Texas isn't the standard right now in college football. You know, that's that Georgia and Ohio State winning and now Indiana winning national titles. But the hope is that this year they will be. But for Oklahoma, it's weird that they would have that mentality when they've been on the losing side of that more oftentimes than not. In the Stark era, you would think it'd been circle for them, but maybe that's just Life. In the SEC, we were in a different. In the Big 12. In the Big 12, you only had two big dogs. For the most part. Yes, K State come in every now and then. And later on, it changed after Texas as Matt kind of lost his grip on, you know, the dominance of the, of the Big 12. But it's. I think ultimately, if it was. If that was me, I would have it circled

CJ Vogel

that that's exactly where I was going to go with it. Rod is, you know, I think it's fine to have the approach of, hey, it's just another game. I don't. I don't really take offense to that. But at the same time, it, you know that that is what every fan and either fan base has circled. Right. That early weekend in October, you meet in Dallas to play Texas, you meet in Dallas to meet to play Oklahoma. If you're Oklahoma, you have to sit there and say, hey, we haven't scored a touchdown in three out of the last four Red River Shootouts. Right. This game has to mean something for us. We made the playoff a year ago. Texas did not. But at some point, that game still has to mean something. It can't just be another one. So we do have the clip. Matthew, if you don't mind bringing that up, this is Taylor Wine talking about it this, this afternoon.

I know you guys play a lot of great opponents, but what's kind of the sense of urgency to finally get

Because what we've seen on the field over the last three out of the last four years, it's not been competitive. That's got to mean something to you. If you get your teeth kicked in like that, I'd like to see that it mattered.

Yeah, that was like, I said it feels like the other guys in the locker room got to be saying it or that's got to be coming from the coaches. To feel that way about that game when you've got. And I've gotten my butt kicked in that game, by the way, so I'm not speaking of someone who hasn't experienced it. Oh, I've been on the Old Testament, old biblical style butt whipping side of that Texas OU game and he asked too, and I wonder, man, that I would treat it differently if I was him. And yeah. Yes. Cleared to get back into the, to the work. He said in five to eight weeks is kind of the timeline to get pads on and get rolling. So look, he might not be fully ready for the beginning of the season, but right now he is participating in practice. He's essentially a full go until pads come on and start hitting.

Yeah. Okay, that's good. So he met he's going to play this season then it sounds like that he's going to play a couple of games. Well at some point. That's why the timeline may work out where he's playing for the Texas game. That's why it matters to me because that game is a Little bit later on.

Yeah. And I feel like if you're gonna, you know, put up a timeline and try to, you know, have a goal to come back, that might be the one. I did. I did ask him a question. It was about the offensive line. I wanted to build off of what Venable said. I asked him about Ryan Fogy, who's expected to be the true sophomore right guard, and Michael Faziosi, who obviously had a stellar freshman campaign. He had a funny answer. There you go, coach. Everybody wishes they had them Hebs. Okay, let me ask you this, Stevie, since we got you, what would you. What would you ask Sark at SEC meeting days? What do you want to. What could it possibly be? Exactly? What. What would you ask if you got a chance to ask himself?

Well, I actually saw that. Is it Brent Venables talk about that? This. This is a. This is a line of scrimmage league, right? I. I would love to ask Axark about that, about his line of scrimmage, because I remember I told y' all that's that's going to be the. The stickler for our team this year on the offense and defense. That's. I feel really good about the receivers. I feel really good about the quarterback, the running back, linebackers, and DBs. I have pause with the interior defensive line, and I have paused with a little bit of the offensive line. And this is a line of scrimmage league. I mean, I gotta agree with him. I don't. I Don't like agreeing with Sooners, but that, that's just one part I gotta agree with is that. So I want to ask, I would ask Sark about how did they sure up their line in the off season from what we've seen over the spring and over this summer. What, what, what do they feel they can do in the sec? Controlling the line of scrimmage. Because we're going to need that sticking

on that, Stevie, because I completely agree for Texas. Defensively you need to be able to stop the run. Offensively you need to get that one yard right. You can look at it basically every single year there's been a big moment, a big game where Texas has needed 1 yard or needed a first down or needed something with push and physicality that they just couldn't get. Over the weekend, Bobby Burton and our team here broke the news that Cole Hudson was filing an age based eligibility lawsuit for a potential return to Texas. Right. He had declared for the NFL draft. He went undrafted. He spent what, maybe a cup of coffee with the Browns, maybe the cow. I mean like he was in the league, he was done with college, but now he's potentially back if he is deemed eligible for this 20, 26 season. Stevie, does that change your outlook on what that might mean for this starting five unit with Hudson potentially back in it?

Stevie Lee

Yes, it does. If it's any other school, I don't know how I feel about it, but it's the University of Texas. So I want him to come back. I don't know.

but you know, it, it will change things. I think that he can make a, make a difference on the offensive line. And, and you know, that's, that's a, that's a little tough subject to me because you know, when you declare, you declare for me. That's just gonna be honest out there. It's just, yeah, you declare, you declare and that, that's the, the risk you run. And now if he gets, you know, approved to come back, then everybody's gonna declare and then say, never mind, you know what I mean?

So that's hard for me. But this is the University of Texas and we do, you know, I like, you know, some of the things that we do.

The other thing though I was going to say about Sark is what we could ask and CJ you can ask is I think that his, his biggest question mark for him and his, his game is have we worked on plays beyond or the 20 yard line in red zone. What do you see doing differently to get the ball into the red zones once you pass that 20 yard line? And that might be a tough question to ask him in front of everybody, cj, he might cuss you out. But Stevie asked that question he wanted me to ask you is what are your playing plans for playing beyond the 20 yard line?

Look, I don't need to start cussing me out until November at least, right? So I, I'm with you though because you know, Rod, you've said it for years. When you get to that 5, 10 yard line and you're in the red area for early on in the tenure, just hand the ball to Bijan Robinson right handed to Roshan. They'll figure it out for you this year, I hope. And coach, correct me if I'm wrong here, but you have some talent, you have some height at wide receiver. We saw it with Adnai Mitchell towards the back end of that season in 2023. Maybe it's just as simple as hey Cam Coleman, go be better than that corner next to you, right? So I hope that's part of it. Coach Ron, I'd love to get your thoughts because Stevie, I think you're dead on. You know, the red zone needs to be really good this year for Texas regardless of how they get it done to be effective.

Well, first of all, I'd like to say he, he obviously knows that and if you ask him that question, we can, we can all agree that you're going to get a cookie cutter coach talk answer. You know, we've got to be better at executing, got to be better at coming off the ball, you know, got to find yards, you know, whatever.

And that starts with me.

Same old, same old stuff, you know, it's, you're not going to get a straight answer out of that. Like most hard questions, that it's the elephant in the room, everybody knows it. But you know, we don't really want to talk about it too much. He's very aware of that situation, very obviously aware of it. And he's not going to give you his secret for this season, what that plan is other than coach talk.

Rye Babers

It is really interesting though because he had it at Alabama, right? He was elite they had in 2020. I mean they were eighth in red zone scoring percentage. I think they were fifth in touchdown precision red zone this last year there at bam. He comes to Texas and then, yeah, you got Dijon and Rojo. So yeah, of course you're going to be elite in the red zone. Nobody can stop those guys. And they got that violent twitch that you, both of those guys had that. And then he hasn't been back to an elite red zone offense, top 10 red zone offense since then. And you've been 90th, 101st, 61st, it's really. And then third down is very similar. You, you had an elite third down offense at Bama. You were top five in 2019, top five in 2020. And you haven't even been top 30 since 2021. And you've been 73rd, I think 70, 42nd, 74th, like two of the most critical areas of football. Sark's not elite there at Texas or he hasn't proven to be elite there without Bijan and Rojo. And so I'm with Stevie. I also think this is the year for him to prove that. All right. Now he can also be in those critical areas in elite play caller and play designer because we haven't. We know he's got it in him because like I said, I just gave it to you. But we haven't seen it really at Texas since Bijan and RoJo.

So CJ take those numbers that Rod just wrote off, throw them in his face and he won't give you the coaches speak answer. He have to. He'll have to dig deep to find that and coach you, you build him out with that coach answer that he's going to give us. But you're right, he's very media trained. He's going to do the coaching speak. But that is a big question mark for everybody. I'm hearing that's mark for everybody. People got Texas winning the national championship. If we do better in the red zone.

CJ Vogel

That look, I think it might just be as simple as that. Can you move the football right now it looks like Texas will be. They did at times last year very successfully. But again, three points won't win you a lot of football games when they really matter. And I think defensively Texas has the ability to hold teams to a lot of three point trips instead of seven. So to be able to separate early, sustain leads and build on that would be key. Stevie, I was going to go this route with Sark on Thursday, very similar. I think in a way that they're cousins of the same question. But you know, what have you done this offseason to be a more physical football team? Is that personnel? Is that coach? I mean, how do you instill a team that is more physical than what we've seen on both sides of the ball? I Don't know it, but I hope SART does.

I mean, that's part of bringing in must chat, right? Aggression, physicality, intensity. There are some. There were some traits that I believe Start thought his team lacked last season, and I'm not saying much. Champs gonna bring all that. But Paxton, I agree with you. Some of those traits. I think he just wants, if Mus champs defense, a physical phase of a team, say offense or defense. It can also, I think, influence the identity of the other. And I think he's hoping that that defense does that for part for the offense, too. But Sark has tried to be more physical guys. He's. He's called more gap power scheme runs than he has in any time he's been at Texas last season. I think trying to be more physical. I do think he has. You know, ultimately, I think Sark, that's why he's committed to the run game, even sometimes stubbornly. Even Muschamp said that because he tries to establish a physical run game, but his teams hasn't. Haven't been physical. You know that from going back to the red zone. Some of your red zone issues are short yardage, goal line issues, and that's his physicality that's playing bully ball. And Stark's teams aren't great at that either. And I think he's hoping this year they'll be a little bit better in that aspect as well. So, yeah, there's some things. I agree with that. I agree with you, Stevie. All right, Steve. How much playing time will he get this year? We actually had a discussion about this because CJ had some great team notes and a little nugget about Michael Terry, which. How much of that. Now, you can't give the folks everything, but how much of that Michael Terry nugget are you willing to reveal to the folks that you had over there on Texas football dot com?

CJ Vogel

Yeah, no, I, I look, I'm hopeful for Michael Terry, I think is the best way I can put it. This is a really crowded, talented running back room. And you know, look, for all of the guys in that room, it's going to be very tough to kind of carve out your role. There are two first team all conference players kind of headlining the room and then a five star true freshman. So for Mike Terry, the big thing for him is he's put on weight. He's earned himself a nice little nickname in the locker room. I won't dive into it, but it's on on texasfootball.com if you want to go find it. He has put on a lot of weight. A lot of good weight, I would say for him. Ready six, three, probably about 233, 235. Right. In that range. Right. So about a ten pound increase from the very beginning of the year. Now, with that weight, it doesn't mean anything if you don't run physically with it. You need to lower your shoulder. You need to put some guys, especially linebackers, safeties, corners. You need to be running through those guys. That's the next step. Get the ball in your hand. Run physically because we know we can catch the ball out of the backfield. We know he's a good athlete, but you need to run physically. That's what you're expected to do. When you're the biggest running back by size in the room, that's the next step. That's been a point of emphasis this offseason from the coaching staff. That's been a point of emphasis from his family and team and group of friends down in San Antonio saying, hey, make the most out of your opportunities. Don't run timid. Don't try to juke everybody. You're bigger than a lot of these guys. Run through them. So that's the next step for him.

Okay. Like that he's put on some good weight. Shows that at least he's embracing Kind of the new. The reinvention of his skill set as a player because he wasn't. I mean, he was just a skilled offensive weapon. And now they want him to turn himself into a physical running back. So that's going to take a lot for.

For any more excitement that you want around Michael Terry. I was told that this offseason he watched a little bit of Deontay Foreman's take and how. I think the balance there for Deontay Foreman is fantastic. But it's that ability to get hit once, brush it off and then keep going. Right. And we also talked about it when we built our perfect running backs. The one cut ability, the vision, really, really good. So I know that's a lot to pair together, but that's something that I think this offseason they've really worked on or he's really worked on is all right. How can I add more pieces to my bag with the ball in my hands than what I had coming into the year?

Deontay Foreman, so underrated. Think about what he did on teams that didn't have a lot of a supporting cast around him. 2000 yards and he was pretty close to being kind of a one man show. I don't want to disrespect the other guys, but he was, he was. He was amazing. He was extraordinary. He really was. That season was that 2016, the 2016 season? I believe it was for him. I'm not mistaken.

And I'm going to probably exhaust every means to do it to try to play and get paid to do it. So I understand where the young man's coming from. I don't judge him for it. As a Longhorn fan, I definitely think it would be advantageous to have a, you know, former starting offensive lineman coming back as a depth piece when your biggest issue last year was your offensive line, so. All right. A couple other questions.

Are we sure we're going to be better knowing that it might just be running back that same unit? I don't know. We'll have to wait. But that's what that competition's for. And that's why if you're Kyle Flood or Steve Sarkeesian, I don't think you turn down anybody with 48 career appearances.
