hey it's carry hey this week on the show i'm going to talk about simple ways that you can personalize claude or chatgpt to get more value out of it to improve the things you want more of and maybe decrease the things you want less of i'm going to talk about instructions i'm going to talk about memory and i'm going to talk about connecting to other sources so maybe you can even increase your productivity and as a bonus i've got a file that you can download that will have the tool that you're using interview you to create your first set of instructions if you haven't done that already so use tools like chatgpt and claude to get a little nugget of value for your personal and professional needs my name is kerry weston i'm your host glad you're here today i want to talk about how to personalize the tool that you're using so that you can get more value more authentic use output more relevant results that kind of thing and i'm going to talk a little bit about claude and chatgpt because most of the folks that i talk to are using either one or or both and yes there's some gemini users and yes there's some co pilots and there's others but for the most part what i tend to run into especially for the curious beginners and the ones that are trying to dip their toes in the water claude and chatgpt become the two that are pretty pretty dominant and predominant in the conversations that i'm having specifically i want to know if you've spent any time customizing the tool that you're using and there's three specific ways just natively in the application i'm not talking about creating custom gpts and creating projects but i'm just talking about setting up the account that you have when you have regular ordinary chats and personalizing the experience so that you get more of what you want and quite frankly less of what you don't okay so i'm going to talk about three things one is the instructions custom instructions and instructions for each two is the memory looking at memory managing memory and understanding what it's remembering about you and then three we've got connectors and plugins and sources ways in which you can connect your tool to other things that you're doing think email think files think a number of different applications that you can attach your tool too so that you can get additional functionality just going to walk through those at a high level today and then in the show notes i'm going to have two files one for claude and one for chatgpt and i'm going to have a custom instructions prompt that you can copy and paste into your tool so that the tool will interview you and create a meaningful set of instructions that you can then put into your tool right to test this thing and get off and running all right so a lot to cover there i'm going to try to keep it high level and not get too detailed but i want you to understand the ways in which you can personalize how you're approaching your tool so that you can get more value out of it okay so the first thing let's just start with instructions or custom instructions in claude it's called instructions in chatgpt it's called custom instructions and the best way to find it is click on your account name the the settings right find the settings and go to personalization if you're in chatgpt you've got settings and personalization when you click on your account if you're in claude you can go to settings and you'll find these things in there claude calls it instructions chat gpt calls it custom instructions and at a high level root what this is is a free flow text area where you can create your brain you can create the purpose the instructions just as it sounds of how you want this tool to interact with you okay i'll tell you how i'm using it and then you can see perhaps how you might modify this and the more experience that you have with these tools the more specifics you're going to be able to put into custom instructions because think of it like as working with somebody or sometimes i say click and treat like training a puppy you want to tell it and reinforce the good but you also want to tell it not to do certain things that you might be experiencing on a regular basis so for me it might be i don't want fluff i don't want em dashes i don't want those long em dashes i want you to only ask me one question at a time right i don't want six or seven questions thrown at me at once so i put things like i want you to challenge my assumptions i want you to push back when you see necessary and challenge what i'm doing and i always want to have short i don't want long winded answers i want short succinct value driven answers okay so these are some of the things that i put into my custom instructions because i want to work with the tool in a way that benefits me i don't want nine paragraphs when you can give me three sentences and some bullets you know that kind of thing so think of instructions as the way in which you're going to teach whatever tool you're using to do the things that you want it to do and less of the things that annoy you or get or get in the way okay and for the documents that i have here if you remember the in my previous episodes i interviewed a gentleman named kevin ellison and we had the the prompt master kevin had developed a tool called the prompt master it's episode ninety three in the podcast series and what kevin had done is he's created a custom gpt that looks at each of the tools like gemini and copilot and claude and chatgpt because each one of them have nuances that help you get more out of it if in specific ways so if you're creating a prompt you're creating a question you can put that question into prompt master and it'll tell you how to use that question specifically with chatgpt to increase its strengths right you can take that same one and say can you convert that for claude and it will create the output that would be more relevant to make use of the strengths inside claude so going back to episode ninety three i created a prompt now that are in the documents that i had mentioned that you can download take the copy and just put it into chatgpt and it's going to interview or claude and it's going to interview you to create your own custom instructions and the reason the prompt master again it's episode ninety three the reason the prompt master was helpful here is i created my instructions and then i said could you optimize this so that the user in chat gpt gets the most value out of it right so that the end product is most valuable for chatgpt specifically and then could you modify this so that the end product is most useful for claude and so pick which one you you're using and just simply copy and paste it in there and it's going to interview you on some questions so that at least you'll have a starter kit for your custom instructions okay and you're going to go through like writing rules identifying what you do for work maybe some of the purposes you use the tool for voice tone and style some of the instructions and directions that'll be most valuable for you so those two documents are in show notes and they've been customized let's say to those two tools okay and in wrapping up on that thought custom instructions have been around for a long time but i'm actually finding in a lot of the workshops that i'm doing that i'm going to go as high as say ninety percent of the folks that i'm talking to have never touched custom instructions so it's something that's getting overlooked and could be highly valuable so i hope it's meaningful for you the second is memory and both claude and chatgpt have memory and if you think about memory as a backpack so each tool has a backpack and they're throwing things into the backpack to help maybe serve you better so it's trying to remember things about you it's trying to remember things that you've done it's trying to remember projects you've worked on or conversations that you've had so that it's personalizing and learning on a regular basis okay and the backpack's only so big and you know the memory is getting bigger as we're getting more advanced but still the backpack's only so big so it doesn't hurt once in a while to let's just say review the memory right and just maybe correct it delete some things that may not be necessary in the long term and just make sure that it's working as let's say as effective for you as possible right if you're in gardener we want to prune a little bit right we want to prune some of the branches and stuff that aren't relevant to the main use so you can do that again going into settings for chatgpt and cloud you're going to see personalization and settings and both of them have memory and you're going to find a setting in both that allows you to take a look at the memory that's in the backpack so you get to actually look at the backpack okay now the two i think the two major differences or the one major difference in the two settings here is that when you're looking at memory inside chatgpt you're seeing the individual entries of the book of the back okay you can't modify them there you can delete them so each individual instance that you see inside the backpack you can delete them so if there's something that you absolutely don't want there then you can delete them in claude the interface allows you to take a look at it and modify it while you're there you're going to do that through a conversation but it allows you to modify it while you're there on purpose right so one of the things that i share if you're using chatgpt i would go take a look at the backpack go click on settings in memory and take a look at what it's remembering and what it's holding on to and the first thing you want to do is prune so if there's stuff in there that's not relevant just delete it okay and again you can't edit there you can't change there but just prune and then if you're using chatgpt go back to a regular conversation just a fresh chat and just say hey i want to talk to you about memory and i want you to understand that i need to change things okay and you can have a conversation about things that you want to modify things that you want to change things that you want it to be correct on because you've inspected the backpack you can go through and do that okay another way of approaching this you may have heard me say this before is just start a fresh chat and just say hey tell me everything you know about me personally and professionally and then have that conversation modify change you know include things that are missing modify things that are that are wrong or or incomplete and you can delete things there as well so you can modify the memory by having a conversation with chatgpt and in claude as you go in there i like that interface you can see the memory and you can have a conversation while you're actually in the memory section and you can do the same with claude but in either way i think taking a look at what's in your backpack and taking a look at what it's remembering and modifying it and pruning it as necessary is a good way for you to make sure that it's remembering the right things and that it's learning the way you want it to learn so two things there custom instructions and memory are going to allow you to personalize this a little bit more okay and then the additional if you think about your phone whether you have an iphone or something else you know there's a whole bunch of apps right and if you've used wordpress there's plugins well both claude and chatgpt have the same functionality you can connect your tool to outside sources okay in claude they're called connectors and in chatgpt they're called sources and you can get to both of them in a pretty straightforward way by opening a new conversation or chat and hitting the plus button and in both instances both in claude and in chatgpt there's a plus button in the lower left hand corner of any conversation that you start okay so if you go to claude and you hit that plus button you're going to see connectors and you may have one you may have done this already and not know but you've got the ability of managing and adding connectors and when you do that you're going to open yourself up to literally like an app store you're going to see the ability of connecting to things like your external for me i'm looking at mine i'm connected to canva i'm connected to google drive i'm connected to fireflies i'm connected to my gmail i had a client connect to adobe pdf so they could have adobe pdf capabilities while they're in the tool okay when you go into chatgpt and do the same thing and you hit that plus button you're going to have the ability of adding sources okay and the same kind of thing when you create sources or you connect to sources you're going to go to an app store you're going to go to the ability or have the ability to bring in additional functionality now keep in mind some of these are authorized and updated on a regular basis and some of them are just out there and maybe aren't addressed so just like everything you want to trust but verify the ability for you to you know find what works for you i would start with the tools that you use the most and just kind of go from there right the ability for you to add functionality and so everything's kind of talking together is where you kind of get advanced efficiency there's going to be things in there like you're going to see things like instacart and target and zillow you know these are maybe fun add ons that are nice to have but i don't know if you really need you know instacart target and zillow in your everyday use maybe you do i don't know but i'm just saying there are functional productivity kind of additions then there's lifestyle additions and things that are fun to have right so you're going to see that but you know what it's all about curiosity it's all about fun so try it out plug it in you can disconnect them at any time but if you didn't know that there was an app store if you didn't know that there was connectors available to either one of these apps this may be an eye opening component for you and you might be able to see ways in which you can start to build efficiencies and workflows right so hey listen three ways of personalizing that i wanted you to know about because like i said i'm finding more and more people are unaware of at least the custom instructions and then when we get to sources and connections that's an eye opener for there too so i hope that you are seeing this as an opportunity of of digging in even further into your curiosity modifying the way in which you're using these tools and getting more value out of it right and again in the show notes from the custom instructions i've put together two documents one for claude one for chatgpt in the documents is a copy and paste it's a it's a copy it's a text that you can copy just put it paste it into a new conversation in chatgpt or claude and then it will become the interviewer of you it will ask you questions with the goal of at the end when it's satisfied the questions it'll give you output that you can create and put into your own instructions so it's kind of a starter kit for custom instructions for both clauder chatgpt if
