they deserve so you can feel confident and refreshed. A Nobel prize winning scientist discovered a repair switch inside your body that controls how fast you age. And a small village in Japan has been flipping that switch every morning without even knowing it. These people rank among the longest lived on the entire planet. And researchers spent years trying to figure out their secret. It wasn't genetics, it wasn't supplements, and it wasn't beans. It's something they're eating for breakfast that triggers a cellular cleanup process that most humans have completely shut down. I'm Dave Asprey. I created the biohacking movement that today is a $36 billion industry. I've written four New York Times bestsellers about longevity, cognitive enhancement, fasting, and a bunch of other things you've probably heard of, including bulletproof coffee. But I have nothing to do with that company anymore. As I was learning longevity, I saw the research connecting this Japanese breakfast ritual to a Nobel prize winning cellular mechanism. And it changed how I think about aging. Today I'm going to show you what it is, how it triggers deep cellular repair, and why the effects start showing up in as little as 72 hours. It all starts with a massive war

going on inside your body. Right now.

It's a war between damage and repair. Every single day, your cells get exposed to stress and toxins and just the wear and tear of moving around and being alive. For most of human history, this wasn't a problem because your body's natural repair system kept up. But the modern environment we built overwhelms that system. When your body takes more damage than it can repair, your body has to make a terrible choice. It has to decide whether to keep you young for tomorrow or keep you alive today. Yeah, it always chooses survival. So your body switches into an emergency state, starts shutting down everything that isn't absolutely necessary for you to survive Right now. Skin regeneration is one of the first things to go until you suddenly notice new wrinkles or thinning skin or redness. Then it pulls resources away from your Muscles and joints. Workouts that used to make you feel good now leave you completely drained. Injuries used to heal in a few days now linger. But the most dangerous part is inside your brain. Because your body's in survival mode. It stops clearing out the damaged proteins that build up in your neurons. And that's when the brain fog sets in.

harder and your memory takes longer to bring up even the simplest things. Eventually, your immune system weakens, your hormones crash, and you start gaining weight. No matter what you eat, your body is literally sacrificing your youth just to keep you functioning. And as the unrepaired damage piles up inside your cells, your immune system just sees it as a threat, triggers massive inflammation to try and clean up that mess. All that damage builds up inside your cells. And because the repair system is still turned off, the inflammation just becomes a constant background noise that accelerates your damage even faster. And it's a vicious cycle. You probably start feeling it around your 25th birthday. That damage creates inflammation, the inflammation creates more damage, and the repair system stays completely shut down. And you can't fix the cycle with expensive creams and energy drinks or by masking the symptoms. The only way out is to force your body out of survival mode. So it turns the cellular cleanup system back on. In 2016, Dr. Yoshinori Osumi won the Nobel prize for discovering exactly how to do that. He found a specific mechanism that flips the switch back to repair. And you can trigger it with a compound called spermidine. Now, you might be wondering what spermidine actually is and whether it's named for what it sounds like. And yes, it is. So why does spermidine have the power to pull your body out of survival mode and turn your cellular repair systems back on? Well, spermidine is a naturally occurring compound that triggers a process your body already knows how to run. Your body used to run that process all the time before modern life just turned it off. The process is called autophagy. The word autophagy literally means self eating. But that name doesn't really do justice to what it actually does for you. Think of autophagy like a microscopic recycling plant inside your cells. When autophagy is running, your cells go on a search and destroy mission. They look for damaged proteins and weak cells or the equivalent of burned out light bulbs. When they find a worn out mitochondria, which is little energy factories that have stopped working, they just hunt down any of that stuff and all the other junk that's taken up space and Then they break it down into new raw materials, and they reuse those exact raw materials to build brand new, stronger, healthier, younger cell structures. And this is why turning autophagy back on feels like such a massive shift in your body. It sharpens your brain because it clears out the plaque that builds up and that clogs up your neurons. And when you remove it, they can start working again. Autophagy can drop your systemic inflammation, and that's that constant background fire that just creates free radicals forever that we talked about earlier. It can even identify abnormal cells and break them down before they turn into a real problem. Studies show that when you turn on autophagy, your biological age markers actually improve. Dr. Osumi's Nobel Prize in winning work proved that autophagy is a core function that your cells need to survive. And when autophagy fails, all the conditions it was supposed to prevent start building up. Yeah, severe cognitive decline, chronic infections, accelerated aging, and just feeling like crap. How do you turn autophagy back on? Well, a lot of people try to do it through intense fasting. That's because fasting does trigger autophagy by dropping your insulin levels and cutting off your body's fuel supply. And I know that because while I read the research, I also have written two major best selling books, including the first modern book on intermittent fasting. So I'm really deep in the science on this. Fasting works for autophagy, but fasting for days on end isn't realistic or enjoyable for most of us. And that's where spermidine comes in. Spermidine activates a parallel pathway in your body that triggers autophagy. Without fasting, it flips a switch on your cell's cleanup machinery, even when you've been eating normally. And that's exactly why the Japanese connection is so important. Because for decades, researchers kept noticing that Japan consistently appears at the top of these longevity studies. Specifically, people living in Nagano, among the world's longest lived populations in the entire world. And the researchers wanted to know why. Turns out the secret was something they were eating for breakfast every single day. So, traditional Japanese food called natto. Now, if you've ever seen natto, it's a dish made from fermented soybeans. It has a really strong smell, a really, we'll call it distinct flavor, and a unique, sticky, stringy texture, like boogers. It's definitely an acquired taste for most Westerners. But the reason it's so powerful is because natto contains about 25 milligrams of spermidine per 100 grams. That's way higher than almost any other food source on the planet. The people in Nagano didn't understand the biological mechanism for centuries. They didn't know what autophagy or spermidine was because we hadn't noticed them yet. But they could notice the outcome. It was visible the entire time. They were literally triggering a Nobel Prize winning cellular repair process every single morning at breakfast. But what makes it particularly urgent for you right now is what happens to your own spermidine levels as you get older. Now, your body does produce spermidine naturally. Well, at least the bacteria in your gut do. But by the time you reach middle age, your natural production drops a lot of. And research from multiple European longevity studies found a direct connection between a drop in spermidine and your aging process. As your blood spermidine levels go down, your biological age goes up. So the people who need autophagy the most, the people who are aging the fastest, are the people whose bodies make the least amount of it. Which means getting spermidine from outside sources becomes more important as you age, not less. So now that you know what spermidine is and how it triggers autophagy, how do you actually use it? Because how you use it matters just as much as whether you use it. Some people end up thinking spermidine doesn't work because they're making common mistakes. Let's start with food first, because that's exactly where the Japanese figured it out. Single serving of natto delivers a good dose of spermidine, but it also delivers something else called nattokinase. Nattokinase is an enzyme only found in natto. That's why it's called nattokinase. That breaks up clumps of protein, including blood clots. And studies now are showing that nattokinase at higher doses can even reverse cardiovascular disease. So the Japanese figured it out first. Natto also has a substantial dose of vitamin K2, which is hard to get in food, and specific probiotics that are good for your gut. That's incredibly important because your gut health is connected to your systemic inflammation levels. And as we talked about before, less inflammation means your autophagy cleanup crew has less damage to manage and more energy to do it. Natto is not something that everyone can tolerate eating every single day, although some people love it. It's got a very specific kind of slimy, gritty texture. And a smell takes some getting used to. And if you're not going to eat natto, I'm into sushi. But natto has Never landed for me. You gotta be careful about where you get your spermidine. A lot of people will say, well, just eat wheat germ. There's some of it in there. But if you know anything about my work, you know that wheat and gluten are really not a good choice for you, especially if you have brain fog. Wheat germ can trigger inflammation in your gut, which defeats the purpose of trying to lower that inflammation in the first place. So if you want to avoid wheat and you don't want to eat natto for breakfast, then supplementation is much easier. And for supplementation, the dose matters way more than you might think. Most of the clinical research showing biological age reversal use very specific doses, things like 1 to 3 milligrams per day from natural extracts, not synthetic lab made sources. And the bioavailability of a natural extract is why it matters, because it dictates whether that spermidine reaches the deep cellular pathways or whether it just floats around in your gut. And underdosing is the single most common mistake I see people make. They'll take a trace amount of spermidine and a cheap supplement. They don't see any effect, and they conclude the whole thing doesn't work. But the dose used in clinical research is the exact dose required to trigger autophagy. And anything significantly below that dose is just not the same intervention. It's like trying to start a fire with a spark when the wood is really wet.

dave code dave and the other thing that trips people up is the timeline. Autophagy begins activating within 72 hours of consistent spermidine intake. So your cells start identifying damaged components and breaking them down. The process is real and starts pretty fast, but there's a difference between triggering the cleanup and seeing the full transformation. Think of it like this. Then 72 hours, your body flips the switch back to repair mode and the recycling plants fire up. But the recycling plant has years of accumulated junk to work through. People eating natto daily in Japan didn't just eat it once and walk away. They built it into their daily diet, and over time, the results became remarkable. Lower inflammation, sharper cognition, and measurably better biology. But the compounding effect of letting it run consistently over weeks and months is where the real measurable biological age reversal shows up in the research. If you take a supplement for two weeks and stop because nothing dramatic happened, you pulled the plug on a process that was already working beneath the surface. But here's the really exciting part. Spermidine doesn't have to work alone. You can actually stack with other habits to multiply the effects of autophagy. For example, there's a specific kind of exercise called rehit, which stands for reduced exertion High Intensity Interval training. REHT is an unusual process I wrote about in my most recent book, and it's pretty straightforward. Over a five minute period of time, you go really slow and then really fast for 30 seconds, then really slow, then really fast for 30 seconds, and then you're done. No more than that. It's the most efficient way to trigger mitochondrial biogenesis, which is just a fancy scientific term for the process of creating new, stronger mitochondria that can replace old weak ones. And deep sleep is another massive multiplier. When you get deep sleep, your body amplifies growth hormone that supports your cells to regenerate. And if you combine that with fasting, you amplify growth hormone even further. So doing both at the same time means you get both benefits simultaneously. And finally, you gotta remove ultra processed foods from your diet. I think you know that already, but you gotta actually do it. That means that your newly activated autophagy cleanup crew has a lot less garbage to manage. Now, you don't need any of these extra steps for spermidine to work, but each one gives your repair system less to fight against and a lot more raw material to build with. If you're eating like crap and sleeping like crap and you're taking spermidine, it's not going to have the same effect. It'll still work, but it just has to work 10 times harder for a much smaller result. And the very last piece of the puzzle is measurement. Biological age tests can measure DNA methylation, and they're now widely available. Bunch of different companies have tests based on the exact same cellular markers that predict health outcomes in major longevity research. I like body health to measure my metabolic age or check out the QR code to get the link. So my advice is that if you can afford it, test your biological age before you start, and then test it again about six months into the process and the number will tell you whether your biology is responding, it'll tell you whether you should adjust your dose, and it'll tell you whether your full protocol is actually working or not. Without a test, actually don't know for sure. And with the test you do, the most powerful thing you can possibly do is just work with what your body already knows how to do. Autophagy was always in your body, it just wasn't turned on. Your body was perfectly designed to identify those damaged cells, break them down and use them to build stronger structures. But eating all the time, not sleeping, and just the stress of the modern world pushed that process into the background. And your body very wisely said it's not important for you to survive now, but you're here because you want to survive way longer than now. And surviving isn't the game. You want to feel really good the whole time and for way longer than anyone else has ever lived. The spermidine will remove one of the key signals that tells your body that there's no need to clean house. If you want to live to at least 180 years like me, you might want to keep a clean house and your cells remember exactly what to do the moment you give them the signal. So now you know how to do it.
