This is the One Piece podcast episode 924 for the week of Monday, June 29, 2026. My name is Zach.
Ed
And my name is Ed.
Alex
And my name is Alex.
Zach
And on today's show we have very special guest. He is the translator for one piece in Weekly Shonen, Jump and Manga plus we have Stephen Paul with us. How's it going, Stephen?
Stephen Paul
Going quite well, thank you very much.
Zach
We have the composer for our end creator of the music for our amazing podcast. Why am I using that support for us? Yes, we have Kirsten Cary. How's it going, Kirsten?
Kirsten Carey
Good morn maid, ladies and gents.
Zach
Good morn maid to yourself as well. Kirsten's also a journalist and a million other things. What other things am I missing? I feel like you're in Japan. That's a quality Japan.
Kirsten Carey
Liver, guitar doer, etc. Etc.
Zach
And we also.
Kirsten Carey
I was in the States for some shamisen performances. Shamisen dabbler.
Alex
Oh yeah.
Zach
You were in New York, right? Yeah, just been insanely busy. Yeah, I'm sorry. I feel bad.
Kirsten Carey
It's okay. I'll forgive you once.
Stephen Paul
Soundtracker.
Kirsten Carey
Soundtracker.
Ed
Yeah. I remember when we did shamisen lessons in. Was that Matsumoto? During the. During a podcast trip to Japan.
Zach
Yeah. And we also did Shamasun license with Kirsten here on the podcast two years ago. Three. May have been three years ago.
Kirsten Carey
Might have been three.
Ed
As I remember it, Maddie was the one who was the best at it.
Zach
That sounds right. In Japan at least. And she wasn't here for hours. Lesson more recently. Yeah, that was fun. And she was. Now I remember Steve and Mattie doing it. And just the woman being amazed at how tall Steve was with a shamasin. I have to find that image. I forgot. I somehow completely forgot that happened. We also have on the show voice actress. You might know her as Flompe. Though she has also performed other roles. Marianne, they're not important.
Marianne
They're not important.
Zach
You are the roles you love that she plays. Not important. Marianne, how's it going?
Marianne
That's not actually true. It's going Swell.
Zach
Not to give spoilers for anyone right off the bat, but I am very happy we have had Marianne for the full Brook flashback here. I think we've had you for everyone, which I.
Marianne
Almost everyone.
Zach
I don't know if that's by accident. Then on purpose later.
Marianne
Yes.
Zach
Yeah. You weren't on the first one.
Marianne
I was on the first one, I think, because. How many chapters has it been?
Zach
I think you've been on every one. It's only been like four. Right.
Marianne
I think I may have missed one. Like the second one.
Zach
Well, if you did, I guess I sound like an idiot. But if you didn't, I don't.
Marianne
I've been in.
Zach
Most of you sounds like as much of an idiot. Yeah. That's what's important. So, yes, today we are going through the end of that flashback one more time. And if you have Daft Punk stuck in your head after this. Good. Yeah, good.
Ed
We're not gonna celebrate.
Zach
Next week's will be arrow. What is it? It's Aerodynamic. Is that the name of that one? That second track? I should have known that one.
Kirsten Carey
The best track.
Zach
Digital Love is really good too.
Kirsten Carey
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Ed
Harder.
Zach
Better.
Kirsten Carey
Caster shower.
Zach
I've. I'm not gonna get on a tangent. Virtus Quo. Very good. They're all great. Has a great album.
Kirsten Carey
You're right. You're right.
Zach
Yeah. Not going to tell you what my YouTube algorithm has been suggesting to me. You're going to have to guess there. We also may have a double anime recap. We'll see with Sam and we'll have piece together for you. But before we get started, lots of one piece news. Ed, I'm going to let you choose. Do you want manga, anime, spin off series, sports or other? So this will be like a Jeopardy. You get to choose the category.
Ed
I want to hear you talk about sports.
Zach
Sports. Ed picked it first. I don't know why, but. So the. The one piece Dodgers event is this Thursday on July 2nd to celebrate this nation's birth. We should really be celebrating with Luffy, the real creator of all love and hope in this world. The Dodgers are playing in Los Angeles. Steve will not be going probably and certainly will not be getting a card out of this. I think I could say that almost for certain.
Kirsten Carey
Are they giving away cards this time?
Zach
I think they are, but they are not there. It's a different design. The other one was an Oda. The Oda design.
Stephen Paul
Oh, this one. It's a different artist.
Zach
Yeah, they. I mean it looks good. It's just I. You know, if for me, I'm a purist. Like if I'm going to go to a Dodgers game. Want some Oda art?
Kirsten Carey
I went to the one last year and I. I did get the card and I still have it. And it is because I am now in Japan. It. It is the most expensive thing in my home.
Zach
Do you have a safe just for that card?
Kirsten Carey
I really should.
Zach
Yeah. Okay. Yeah, especially people are listening to this and somehow are able to. They're triangulating now those geodoxers that could figure out where you are, but they could do it by audio. Just like. I heard a cicada.
Stephen Paul
Acoustics. Yeah,
Zach
I know exactly where she is.
Kirsten Carey
I heard a cicada and a woman yelling. Where could she be?
Marianne
They'll look at like the background of your room and be like, okay, what apartments or houses in Japan look exactly like that?
Zach
We don't release the video. So they are just going by audio.
Marianne
Oh, well, see then. Then you're groovy.
Zach
It's fine. It looks like tickets are available for like under $400, so that's fine. Or how long. I guess this goes in reverse order. Oh no, there's some in under 300.
Kirsten Carey
Fine.
Zach
No, it's not. I was being sarcastic. It's not fine. I think the cheapest ones are like 300 bucks. And I bet you most of those are just for that card. I bet you. But good for the LA Dodgers and good for One Piece. Okay, let's see. Kirsten, you want to pick the next category? You get Manga Events Spin Offs. I think that's it.
Kirsten Carey
I kind of want to save anime for last Anime. So let's do. Let's do Spin offs.
Zach
Spin offs. One Piece Heroines premieres this. Is that this Sunday, July 5, 2026? Yeah, I think that's a Sunday. The trailer is out. It still looks gorgeous. It is one episode. Then the second cour of the One Piece anime season begins with 1169. Nice. No, no one. Okay.
Stephen Paul
So is that. I thought Heroines was another Netflix joint or am I mistaken?
Zach
It might be a co production, but it's airing in places in Japan.
Stephen Paul
Okay, gotcha.
Zach
Yeah. I guess for. I don't know what the worldwide release plan is. I'm assuming there is one. I don't know what that is. I should probably check, but I'm not certain this is the problem.
Stephen Paul
When we get all our news from Japan. So we get all the Japanese details.
Zach
That's true. We do get all our news from Japan. Okay, Steven, you want to pick the next category? Manga Events, Spinoffs.
Stephen Paul
Well, I want to hear.
Zach
Sorry. Anime.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, let's. Okay. Since I work on the manga, let's talk about One Piece, Volume 115.
Zach
How did you know what I was going to talk about? The COVID for volume 115 is out. Steven, what does it feature? Since you seem to know, it features
Stephen Paul
Luffy, Loki, Gunko and Ragnar Ratatosk the squirrel. It seems like that's about it. And it has a yellow, red, and purple background. Perfect for popsicles in the summertime.
Zach
Actually, yes.
Ed
I'm a little upset by Radit Husker's. His squirrel hand is too realistic.
Stephen Paul
Yeah. I mean, he's got little squirrel beans. I didn't know that squirrels had.
Zach
Do squirrels have beans?
Ed
I've been having an influence for climbing trees.
Zach
Been having an influx of squirrels.
Marianne
Squirrels would have beans.
Kirsten Carey
I think squirrels got beans.
Zach
Okay, I'm gonna look up squirrel feet.
Stephen Paul
Squirrels get nuts.
Marianne
That'll be an interesting beans for nuts.
Kirsten Carey
His little foot has a little.
Zach
They do. They do.
Kirsten Carey
Little heart pad.
Zach
Oh, God. There's just. God, Etsy is just selling. Just selling random squirrel paws. That's gross.
Marianne
I believe it.
Zach
But like, not attached to the squirrel. They look like monkey paws. Except slightly creepier when they're. You know, like the. Like the Simpsons thing with the actual just paw. Anyway, getting away from that one.
Marianne
Look like blisters gear 5.
Ed
Luffy with Zeus's Thunderbolt. Mm.
Zach
Someone did mention. When you look at it far away, his knee looks like a thumbs up. And I can't unsee that. Do you know what I mean?
Ed
Yes. I see it now.
Stephen Paul
Did it? Yep. Yep.
Zach
Yeah.
Stephen Paul
That's got two thumbs.
Zach
Yeah.
Stephen Paul
AI.
Zach
Oh, that's what it is. That's what it is.
Kirsten Carey
I thought it was a thumbs up.
Zach
Yeah.
Kirsten Carey
I'm just now realizing that it's not.
Zach
Yeah. I can't. I don't think that's a composition issue. I think that's an optical illusionist or whatever you call that. You know, I. I think I like this cover. Is it, like gonna be one of my favorites? Probably not. But I don't have a. It's like relatively simple.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, I like that for it.
Zach
Which is good. I like the background colors. Personally. I like the lightning. Always.
Ed
Ratatusker's color scheme is interesting.
Stephen Paul
He's blue.
Ed
White and blue.
Alex
Looks good enough to eat.
Marianne
Isn't he like an ice squirrel? So that tracks, right?
Alex
I think that tracks.
Stephen Paul
Yeah. That makes my. Yeah, that makes sense.
Zach
I love Ratatasker and I do appreciate him showing up at any point in
Kirsten Carey
Time I looked for Ratatoskr in the character popularity poll, but he wasn't on it yet.
Alex
Oh, boo. I enjoy his color scheme in comparison to Loki's. I think it's a nice compliment to his magenta hair.
Stephen Paul
It's kind of like how a Pokemon designer would do him. Right?
Zach
He has. We'll talk about that later. We'll talk about that later.
Ed
He has the color of Brazilian money.
Marianne
That's.
Alex
Yes. No, he's the color of Pachirisu. Right. That's the. That's the Lightning Squirrel from Pokemon.
Marianne
Yes.
Ed
Yeah.
Marianne
Oh, yeah.
Kirsten Carey
Same exact.
Zach
Related. I'm sure it's related as we'll discuss again later.
Alex
I guess, because I've gotten my Fellow of Gunko and I'm like, oh, we already know her color scheme. I'm like, yeah, I could probably do without her on the COVID But I guess we're at a point in the story that point where the chapters covered in the volume aren't really like, here's some more color schemes, I guess.
Ed
What chapters are covered in this volume?
Zach
That was a perfect segue, Ed. This covers chapters 1167 through 79. It's the most chapters ever in one single volume.
Alex
Whoa.
Zach
13 per. This is per Adil. So if that's wrong, please.
Ed
I thought that happened in Dressrosa, because I remember on my shelf back when I lived in my old place, one volume in like Dressrosa was much wider than the others.
Zach
There have been a few twelves.
Stephen Paul
Yeah. 23 is a big fatty chunk of. That was the. That was the end of Alabaster.
Alex
Yeah.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, yeah. But yeah, that would have been back when Oda did 20 page chapters every time.
Zach
I'm not saying it's the longest volume, which is the most. It's probably. It's probably.
Stephen Paul
It's probably still pretty long. But yes, I imagine that some of this decision was because he's been doing shorter chapters recently.
Zach
So 1116. 1167 begins with like the post God Valley portion of the flashback. You could really divide it into three. That flashback.
Alex
So that tells me should have been on this cover then.
Zach
100%. Well, you'll never know. And this cover is for people who
Ed
are currently reading the manga, not the people who are reading the chapters in this volume.
Zach
To be fair, I see why he wanted to go through 1179 for this one because it ends with the Saint Nerona IMU reveal. Like, yeah, that is a great place. Yeah, that's a.
Alex
That's the perfect volume ender.
Zach
Yeah, it really is.
Alex
That's Gonna. Oh, that's gonna move some copies.
Zach
That's gonna move a lot of copies. And you know who's gonna probably. I know who's certainly gonna be on the COVID of the next one with that bishonin look or whatever the hell he looks like.
Marianne
Luffy.
Zach
Luffy. I would. I would buy that. Although I think there.
Ed
Or is that the way Hancock sees him with the roses and shit?
Alex
Yeah.
Zach
We only have. I think. Oh, no. We have two categories left. Steven, did you get to choose? Oh, no. You did, Alex. So we have no anime and events. I kind of changed these categories as we went. So I'm sure the listener realizes.
Alex
What are you talking about?
Zach
You were doing Jeopardy Style. You choose the news category. Events or anime. We've already done manga spinoffs and sports, so
Alex
I'll say events because I know you're going to talk about.
Zach
Oh, yeah. Oh, wow. It's like you all read what I said.
Ed
Is there a frog in here?
Alex
Jesus Christ.
Zach
Okay, so I get to try and pronounce this. This is going to be great. The one Piece Inquiry. Increable Gravin. Oh, this is all awful. Everyone's losing their shit. You just can't hear it.
Kirsten Carey
Anyway, I'm 10 years ago. Let me see if I can help.
Marianne
From the same house because you used to be Nail Frost.
Zach
Oh, there. Marianne. You're all going. It's Marianne. You want to do it?
Alex
Kids, Help.
Marianne
Where is it? Is it on the discord?
Zach
Yeah, it's slightly higher. It's just above the volume cover thing.
Marianne
Let's see.
Zach
I'll let you just read it.
Marianne
Okay. We'll see how bad my French pronunciation is. I should know. I was born there. Okay. Au PI Ex Incroyable Gravin Paris Gravin Museum Permanent exhibition A Parisian Cabaret with the starhefts Open now.
Zach
Oh, yo. Next read the rest is not all in French.
Marianne
I'm gonna keep it. I'm going to be French for the rest of this episode for no reason at all.
Zach
Actually, that would have been very fitting for this whole flashback. But I guess we lost that opportunity. We'll see. Yeah. So there's a permanent exhibition happening in Paris. I think we talked about how the French generally are just ahead of us when it comes to manga and anime fandom. Like only second behind to Japan, I think is a pretty fair. At least per capita.
Alex
They freaking love One Piece in France. I think I might have talked about this when I came back from our trip there. Yeah, but they really freaking love One piece over there.
Zach
And you know what? They're right. They're right. That's really all there is to that. So you could step into this 80 square meter Parisian cabaret.
Ed
It opens who everyone's favorite revolutionary is in France.
Zach
Dragon.
Stephen Paul
What are you going to tell us?
Ed
Belo Betty.
Zach
Oh, Bello Betty.
Marianne
Oh, yes, that makes sense to me.
Zach
Yeah, that sounds right.
Ed
She's based on a French painting.
Zach
Yeah. Oh, the French love French painting.
Marianne
Oh, is she based on the Marianne
Ed
painting Liberty Leading Evil?
Marianne
The one that I'm named after?
Stephen Paul
Oh my God.
Ed
Wow.
Zach
Yeah, she's nodding to the people. Wow.
Alex
You should have been the voice of Bella, Betty.
Kirsten Carey
Honestly. Yeah, I was gonna say. Has she been cast yet, man?
Marianne
Oh, yes. Long since. Long since.
Zach
Yeah. To be fair, that's not like a role that recurs too often. Like, I don't know how much speaking.
Marianne
I also didn't know that she was based off of Marianne until just now.
Ed
That was just an inference we made when she was introduced.
Zach
No, it definitely was.
Stephen Paul
I think he talked about it.
Zach
He confirmed it.
Marianne
I mean, she's even got her tits out. So. So it. You know, I should have realized sometimes
Zach
art is drawn for the express purpose of the result. And titties. Yes. Anyway, the first 50,000 people who I'm assuming already got this will get an OP13001 Luffy promo card while supplies last. I am assuming they are gone.
Stephen Paul
They did not last.
Zach
I am assuming because this happened two days ago as we're recording and definitely more than that as you're listening.
Marianne
So.
Zach
So they're gone. I'm sorry, but French listeners, we love you and appreciate you. Despite the frog comment earlier and the last category, everyone got to choose, right? Or Kirsten, did you not get to choose?
Kirsten Carey
I chose.
Zach
Oh, you did. Okay, so I'm going to choose anime. The anime I specifically am referring to is the One Piece Anime. The trailer is the.
Kirsten Carey
Yes, the One Piece anime.
Zach
The One Piece anime. Exactly. That's how it said. I am very excited to do the One Piece podcast.
Alex
The One Piece. Yes. Oh, yeah, we already did that just now. Die. One Piece.
Zach
Die.
Alex
Honestly, man, I'm sure.
Zach
Wow.
Alex
A lot of people are sick of it. Would say that.
Zach
So the series. I think this was the first time we heard February 2027, specifically. I mean, I say that with skepticism, but the trailer came out this week. Do you all have any. Oh, God, the Texan also is catching off. Do you all have any thoughts on the. On the teaser trailer that came out?
Alex
Yes.
Zach
Okay. Any thoughts?
Kirsten Carey
You would like to
Ed
watch it? I don't really have any. Memories of it at this point.
Alex
I think it looks fine. Yeah, it doesn't look what I thought it was going to look like, I guess because all the concept art was like, look how watercolor this is. And Right. And I guess, like, I don't know, it. It's like, oh, the manga is gonna come to life. And I don't know, to me it just looks like an episode of East Blue with a glow up and more cg. I guess a lot of cg. Yeah, I. I guess that's fine.
Zach
Like, it's probably what they finished first. I bet you that that's the reason
Alex
why did it take them five years? I guess is what I'm. Is what I want to know. Because it doesn't look incredibly impressive to me.
Zach
Has it been 5? It was 20, 23. It was announced. The problem is.
Alex
And they've kept showing the same concept art over and over. Like, oh, this is coming.
Zach
Remember.
Alex
Remember the thing that we announced every year?
Ed
Remember that the concept art was first shown two years ago? I remember on One Piece, Dave. I was still in the hospital.
Zach
And then they re announced it with the same cover art as if it had. I'm sorry, promo. As if it hadn't come out.
Alex
Now I'm going to say that I'm not, like, I'm not also jazzed that my enemy Tanaka is going to come back as Luffy because one, apparently she didn't want to. And they were like, oh, no, you're going to do it.
Kirsten Carey
Really?
Alex
Yeah. She wanted like new blood. I don't know.
Ed
Back to dump truck full of money after her house. She's not made of stone.
Marianne
I did see that on Twitter.
Alex
Yeah, There was. There was an article or something.
Zach
Take it with a gigantic grain of salt. Just because I haven't seen that.
Alex
Well, this gigantic grain of salt also to me infers that like, oh, maybe Tanaka might be the only one coming back to do it. Or like, if they only got. It would feel weird to me if they only got Tanaka and then they got new cast for the rest of the crew or like a hodgepodge of new and old voices to me. I don't know.
Kirsten Carey
Very weird.
Alex
It doesn't seem. It doesn't seem very clear to me also, like, if this is going to be a. Oh, we're going to do the whole series or if this is just going to be like up to a certain point. To me, to me it seems like a big net.
Ed
Just make a choice. Choice and commit to it.
Alex
Yeah. To me, to me it seems like it's supposed to kind of run concurrently with whatever they're doing with the live action. Maybe. I don't know.
Zach
Yeah, that's just.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, I think that's the opportunistic part of the so.
Ed
And it's going to be on Netflix February 2027.
Zach
Yeah. So I agree. I mean, first of all, the problem is they announced it probably as soon as the ink dried on the contract. That. I mean, that was the issue with the live action too. I'm pretty sure. Like, I'm not certain, but I.
Ed
Ink dry. You say like it was signed with quills and an inkwell.
Zach
It wasn't. Yeah. That's how I sign all my documents.
Marianne
Do you know that it wasn't. So if you don't.
Zach
Yeah. Can you prove it? No, I. So I think. I don't really think they have been working on it the way that we think for that since it has been initially announced. However, they have been working on it for a while. I also think what we're seeing because it's not being released for another 9 months, 10 months, something like that. I take this with that grain of salt as well. The thing that I was disappointed, like I saw people thinking like it looked like, oh, this is grittier and newer but you know, but it doesn't have like the magic of the old one, which look that might end up being the case at the end of the day. I don't know.
Alex
But I mean to say a positive thing about it, I will say that I'm really glad that Luffy retained his gigantic muppet mouth from, you know, the earlier manga. Like, that's nice. The style appears to be, you know, more true to the manga style. Even though I think that the anime still kind of nails it in 97. But that's just me. It's a fucking anime. Thank you.
Zach
I agree. Gree. The thing that disappointed me the most is how similar this looks actually. Like I was hoping we would get something that felt different for a different series. Like look, you could like it or hate it, but if it's different, at least it's bringing something new to the table that can be discussed and enjoyed or by new people or that that was personally where I kind of so far have felt let down. It looks nice. It looks nicer I think than like the specials personally, which look a little too glossy for me at least this. This has that like. It feels closer to like what we've been seeing in the. From Toei post. Shauna.
Stephen Paul
Yeah. Yeah. It looks expensive. It looks like they put a Lot
Zach
of it looks expensive. It does look expensive. Which you could say what you want about the One Piece anime. It never looked expensive back in the day.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, for sure.
Zach
Even at any. Until recently. Pretty recently, right? Yeah.
Kirsten Carey
Yeah. I mean, that's how I feel about it too. It really has made me think about the like, I don't know. This series isn't a huge kind of a lose lose situation because it's like on one hand you want it to to look more different so that it distinguishes itself from the Toei anime. But on the other hand, if it looks too different, then people are going to be upset.
Zach
I just keep thinking of the Ganzak special. Like that's. I feel like that and Movie six, I feel like are the only times we've really seen like, okay, this is like a completely full in different take. Like I know we get those like from like Ishitani and that sort of thing, like on a weekly basis, like in very short chunks. But like reinvent. Reinvent the wheel. That's the exact opposite.
Alex
Hey, don't forget about this. Don't forget about the second movie. I think that also has some interesting.
Zach
You know, I have not seen the first three movies, Alex.
Alex
Why?
Zach
Well, because I have been trying to be good and wait for them to be officially released, but although I
Kirsten Carey
show about pirates.
Zach
Oh yeah, they were officially released, Naruto. Technically they were officially released of ninjas and doing ninja things in their free time. Sorry, go ahead.
Alex
That's right. AKA doing stuff in the dark. And I tell you, technically they were released in the uk. So I guess if you want, you can just watch them now.
Zach
I might do that. I might do that.
Alex
They're. They're not hard to find.
Zach
No, I am sure. Yeah, I'm sure you could help. I might do that. Yeah.
Kirsten Carey
Going. Going back to the anime. Did anybody watch the thing with the director?
Zach
Yeah.
Kirsten Carey
Did anybody catch the moment where he's like, we have a lot of women working in our studio, so we were able to get like really good wallpaper and furniture designs.
Alex
What?
Marianne
Huh?
Zach
No, I missed. I only watched half, I'll be honest. So I might miss that part.
Kirsten Carey
That was at least the translation more or less like given by YouTube. And it made me feel real bad.
Ed
Women binders. Follow them.
Kirsten Carey
Yeah.
Alex
Geez, that sucks.
Stephen Paul
Okay.
Alex
Yeah, I basically started watching it. I'm like, okay.
Marianne
I was hoping the end of that conversation was going to be like, so the girls will have better proportions.
Zach
No, no, I thought you meant wallpapers for their screens. Well, I don't think that's a gender thing. Right.
Alex
Wow, we're in a great spot with the trailer.
Marianne
I will say the thing that I noticed about the trailer as a voice actor is I immediately recognized in the English version, at least, that that was not the same narrator.
Zach
Yes. I also know.
Marianne
I know a lot of us Texas folks are, like, kind of in a tizzy because we're like, are they gonna replace everybody? Is it just gonna be an LA dub since it's Netflix and they're LA based? Like, what's gonna happen? Are they gonna replace everybody? Are they going to bring some people back? What's going to happen? Because we don't know yet. We have no idea. And, like, if Crunchyroll is not involved,
Zach
we don't know which they're not. Right.
Marianne
Right.
Alex
No, that's crazy. Yeah. I, My, my, my prediction, and I think Steve even said prediction from hell, is that they get the live action cast to. To dub it.
Stephen Paul
Oh, God. Right.
Alex
And that there's one there. At least there's one actual voice actor.
Zach
She's a good voice actor too, so it works well. And in.
Marianne
Yaqui and Taz have both done the Spanish dubs for the live action, so they might be big.
Zach
That's impressive.
Alex
I feel like I know that there's that LEGO special coming out, and I think they all voiced on that. So it's, it's, it's very possible that. I mean, I'm not gonna.
Ed
I mean, the LEGO collab was a Netflix ish thing too.
Zach
I could see. To be honest, I could see Jacob being very good at that as well. Like, the only person I could guarantee you will suck at it. We all know who I'm about to say, right?
Alex
Yeah.
Zach
Yeah.
Alex
I mean, you know, look, here's, here's the thing. I'm not even gonna say anything, you know?
Zach
Nope.
Alex
And this is, this is just a projection because. I don't know. I. I hope that if they do do like a whole rehaul with the voice cast that people we know are on it.
Marianne
That's what I hope your LA friends will be. But none of us Texas folk are likely to.
Zach
Oh, well, if this makes you feel better, the Toy One Piece anime will definitely still be employing you for a long time. Not you specifically, but maybe you specifically versus this, which is seven episodes every five years. It sucks. But also it will be a more fleeting kind of.
Alex
Yeah. So here's the thing about that, right? Like, if it took him five years to get up to Sanji's introduction, then I certainly look forward to 10 years from now when we finally see the march to Arlong. And it's not nearly as riveting. Not nearly as riveting as the 90s 99 anime. Look, man, you can't, like, I know. I. They got a new composer too, right? You looked into this?
Kirsten Carey
Yeah, it's a Yuki Hayashi from my hero academia and Haikyuu fame.
Alex
Do you have any hot takes on. On this?
Zach
On this front, Koi Tanaka is also legendary as.
Alex
I mean, like, I would never replace Tanaka.
Zach
No. Personally, I'm shocked they did.
Kirsten Carey
But this is sort of the same thing about, like, casting Mayumi Tanaka, right? Like, yep, she is the sound of Luffy. He is the sound of one piece. But by putting a new, like, well,
Zach
this is the thing.
Alex
Loopy.
Kirsten Carey
But getting a new composer doesn't make sense.
Zach
You either go all in on making this different, which is then I think, like, making those different decisions, like a composer, like voice actors even, like, go all in on it. Make this different than, you know, and that is not to be an affront on anyone who has done it before, but, like, just do it versus, like, this is like kind of like a almost half ass. Like, you know, there's some parts that are different, but Tanaka. Mayumi Tanaka's in it. Kohei Tanaka's not. And it kind of looks like it, but it kind of doesn't like it. Just, you know, make a decision.
Ed
One Tanaka.
Alex
That's what I always say.
Kirsten Carey
Like, Yuki Hayashi is like, one of the most popular anime composers, and he writes very uplifting, pretty things. I don't particularly find his melody work to be super memorable. To me, he's more of a vibes composer than a melody composer. There's probably listeners who are gonna throw tomatoes at me for that.
Zach
Well, Kirsten, who. If you had free range of picking any anime related. Not yourself. Any anime.
Kirsten Carey
I was gonna say, obviously me.
Zach
Yeah, I know you were gonna. No, no. But any anime and you would be right. It's the right answer.
Ed
But Koichi Sugiyama is dead.
Kirsten Carey
Yeah, that's tricky.
Zach
Living or dead?
Marianne
I want to hear Evan Call's version.
Kirsten Carey
Yeah, actually, you know, like, Evan Call would be awesome.
Marianne
Lean into the piratey fantasy elements of it more.
Alex
Yeah.
Kirsten Carey
And like, get that. Because he has like a. Like a bluegrass background that he's bringing to Free Rename.
Zach
Oh, he's doing Free Run. Okay.
Kirsten Carey
Yeah. And that would be like having that sort of like, bulky, piratey, kind of Americana approach would be really cool and interesting.
Zach
Yeah, I like that a lot. That's a good answer. I want to say one more thing and then we can move on to the manga because I know we've been talking about this for a while, but to like the general discussion. I was thinking of something friend of the show, Miles, who like, he does data for like anime. Like White Box, I think is his. Is the name of his studio or whatever the consulting company. They like look to see trends as to like who's watching what. And one thing he has said and that this is not surprising. I mean it's just. I think the disconnect we have versus just a general fan base. People don't watch old anime. And like the example they were using was like a Yu Yu Hakusho, which is a brilliant, perfect 10 out of 10 anime series. But like people. I think this is actually the episode Steve was on for their show Quest for the Best. So. But I think they said something like, you know, anything pre. Like, I mean, 2009 as we know is 17 years ago. So like what is an old anime? Is that like from 10 years ago? Like One Piece, 1999? I agree.
Ed
Alien is over 30 years old now. Came out in 1995. Set in the near future of 2015.
Alex
Turning to dust right now.
Zach
We're all dust. This is a recording.
Alex
All dust in the wind. Yeah, that's.
Zach
Yeah, you know, like the.
Alex
The Goo Goo Dolls song. Is that what that is?
Zach
Is that Goo Goo Dolls?
Alex
No, no, that's not Iris.
Zach
What is Iris? Which is bipolar.
Alex
Yes.
Zach
But yeah, I just was. I just was saying that like, there is a business underlying reason they are doing this. And that is because the marketability of a series made in 1999 is going to wane. Even for something like One Piece. It's like, okay, that's bring this into the century literally here.
Alex
So it's going to take another century for them to even get to Skypie.
Zach
I can't wait for 2101 when that comes out.
Alex
I'm seriously baffled as to why it took them five years. And I wonder if part of it is like, oh, yeah, we tried doing this like weird watercolor style, but it just didn't look good in motion.
Zach
I bet you there was. I don't have a doubt that there have been like production and creative differences or difficulties that have led to delays. And also that they announced it immediately. I think.
Alex
Yeah, I mean that's probably part of the problem is that people were anticipating it for way too long and it probably should have been announced maybe last year when they were start. When they actually started working on it.
Zach
Even if it gets leaked, like, you could deal with that, I feel like. But hey, have you subscribed? Yeah, go ahead.
Kirsten Carey
Yeah, just to pin some adorable personal news onto this. Like, I don't know, I do think the Toei anime does have some staying power, at least for some people. Like, my parents, without any prompting from me, binged OPLA and got super hooked. And then I told them, like, okay, well if you want to continue in the anime, here's the episode. And now they're on Ennis lobby. Like they're sending me daily updates about where they are in Ennis lobby. And it's.
Zach
When are they going to start listening to the show? Are we going to start. What generation are they?
Kirsten Carey
They're in their 70s.
Zach
Oh, yeah. Okay. So that's where my. I can't imagine my parents watching.
Kirsten Carey
I can't imagine. Yeah, it's. It was wild. Like I went home for a little bit and we were watching Alabasta together and it was very surreal but very delightful.
Zach
Yeah, no, I, I personally agree. I'm just saying, like, from a Netflix like, standpoint, that's what they're thinking. Like it. This is old. We have to make a new one. And also there's a lot. This is really a series for the people who are like 1100 episodes. I can't do that. Where versus all of us who know there's only 1100 episodes. I want to watch more. I want to read more. Like, that's the, that's why we do this. So it. We're in completely the opposite camp of, of the people who this is targeted at, which is fine.
Alex
Speaking of reading more.
Zach
Thank you, Alex. Good Segways helps from. Help from you guys. But before we get into reading, subscribe to us on patreon@patreon.com One Piece podcast where you could read the alternate titles and look at alternate images from our artists, including this week's artist, Kirby, who I have to say, if it is not said before. So first of all, I want to apologize. We were off last week and it was kind of a last minute decision in getting content together and realizing there was no content to be gotten.
Ed
Happy Father's Day.
Zach
Thank you. And Alex, thank you. And Steven for Simba. Okay.
Kirsten Carey
And of course, happy Father's Day to Ruben.
Zach
Now Leuven, it should wait. Was it changed.
Alex
Reuben sandwich.
Kirsten Carey
Reuven sandwich.
Zach
Okay. Anyway, what I was gonna say. What was I gonna say? Oh, Kirby's art from the week before last was phenomenal. And if you haven't, if you don't check out our art week to week. You're really missing out. Like the full art on our website onepiecepodcast.com youm could see the sketches and you know all of that on patreon.com onepiecepodcast and the sticker of the month club is back. Is the voting still happening? I should have checked this before I started talking. Where the vote. So the vote looks like it's going on through. No. It happened. So is the Loki versus the Harley drawing. So the Loki will be recolored. It's literally the face for volume 115. So if you're wondering, that will be our sticker. Not enough Homestar Runner fans voted. What are you all doing? What are you all doing? Patreon subscribers. But maybe next time. I do love that Steve still has no foundational reference to Homestar Runner and we made him do that art. So that's still excellent. Yeah. Now we could. What was the segue? Alex? I own this. Read one piece. Yeah. Is that what we usually do?
Kirsten Carey
Let's read one piece.
Zach
The one. Let's read the one. No, just regular. Okay. Scrub this whole thing.
Alex
Get on with it.
Zach
Alex got a pizza delivery.
Alex
I did.
Zach
I sit here without anything being delivered.
Alex
I made a pizza. Bethany put it in the oven and she delivered to me. And I gave her a tip. Because that's what you should always do with your pizza delivery people. Give them a tip.
Zach
This is the manga recap for chapter 1186. One more time. This chapter is available shown at jumpdopviz.com mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp and you could listen to all Daft Punk albums wherever you get your music. Ed, we should start with the author comment this week. I think.
Ed
Yes, I got it. Here it is. Fizz.com blog for the author comments. They're usually posted around on the same day the chapter comes out. Sometimes they take longer, but this week it was out before recording. So. Oda says, I'm sure everyone had an awesome time, but I walked around so much during the Pokemon Go Fest in Tokyo's Kaihin park that my legs almost fell off. At least it was his legs. He doesn't need those to draw.
Stephen Paul
It is very funny that he started his comment with I'm sure everyone had an awesome time. But.
Zach
But I walked.
Stephen Paul
But it sucked. Shit. Yeah.
Zach
Because I had a walk. I didn't know there was a Pokemon Go Fest, but.
Ed
Any Japan knowers who know where Kaijin.
Zach
There's one in Chicago in happen. It happened already, dude.
Alex
A friend of mine Goes like. He like flies around the country and goes to them. He went to one in New York last year.
Marianne
If there was one in Dallas and I knew about it, I would go to it.
Zach
They're like the Pokemon go to the fest.
Stephen Paul
You have to Pokemon drive to the.
Marianne
Yeah, you would have to Pokemon drive to it. Dallas is huge.
Zach
You could drive to go somewhere.
Alex
Okay, Pokemon drive to your polls. I think it's kind of funny that Oda's like, hey, guess what? I was here. I was amongst you all. You had no idea.
Zach
That's what I was thinking.
Marianne
So then Ratatoskr is Petshirisu.
Zach
Yes.
Alex
Confirmed.
Zach
Confirmed. You know, seriously though, I think it is confirmed.
Kirsten Carey
Yeah. After looking at the picture, it's like. It's the same picture.
Zach
Yeah, 100%. Any other thoughts on the Pam from
Ed
the office meme of that's the same picture.
Zach
Same picture. Yeah.
Ed
Yeah.
Zach
Any other thoughts?
Ed
Oda is exercising. I like that.
Zach
Yeah, me too.
Alex
Good.
Zach
That's really good. You should be.
Alex
I'm glad that you had a positive take from that.
Zach
Versus at least he doesn't draw with his legs because the entire Internet was thinking it. And shame on you, Internet.
Ed
I mean, it's usually. I mean, it's always. These author comments are usually. Oda goes a place. Either he goes to a concert or he eats something.
Zach
Yeah. And as friend of the show has said before, Isaiah, that's what all social media should be. Ed, what's going on in the COVID page?
Ed
Yes, we have a reader request for Loki secretly drawing a picture of Aida and Aida secretly enjoying it by Tsunodongo. I mean, who wants a sand dumpling? That's gross.
Stephen Paul
Yum.
Zach
Oh, is that what that is? Yeah, that, I guess.
Stephen Paul
This is adorable.
Zach
This is probably one of my favorite of these, like, random characters. And it's so cute.
Ed
It's basically a stick figure face with a broccoli top. And it says mommy.
Kirsten Carey
And the fact that it says mommy. Just my heart.
Alex
It really just broke me. Like.
Zach
Was that in English too? No, mommy. Oh, damn.
Ed
In the, like the sort of squiggly and like, weak.
Zach
So cute. Yeah, Yeah, a little.
Alex
This is a pompadour.
Kirsten Carey
This is a canon event in my head.
Zach
Oh, 100%.
Alex
It's so cute. It breaks my heart and it's so cute. I want to give him a little hug.
Zach
Yeah, me too. Oh, now you're. Now you're making me well up.
Ed
What's that animal that's sort of springing? It looks like it's springing out Of Lucky's helmet. What?
Alex
Oh, right in the background. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Marianne
They're all babies buddies who are all dead now.
Stephen Paul
Yeah. This is Elbaf babies.
Zach
Yeah. Oh, those are the ones. Yeah.
Alex
Ida's nanny, she just See her stocking feet.
Stephen Paul
Yeah.
Ed
And I love how his tongue is sticking. He's really.
Zach
He's really working, concentrating. I hate to be. We had Homestar Runner references.
Ed
If he didn't have bandages on his face, he'd be squinting.
Zach
You ruined my joke.
Alex
Oh, good God.
Zach
How is he?
Marianne
Are you gonna say they were arrowed?
Zach
No. How does he draw with. With a blindfold on? With boxing clothes on his hand?
Alex
Hey, Zach, I want you to time code this because I just realized I haven't been recording this time.
Zach
Alex, what were you doing?
Alex
Not recording.
Marianne
Eating pizza.
Alex
Okay, that was before I started recording. We started recording before.
Marianne
You didn't start recording, you mean.
Alex
Anyway, Delaney, if you just use my zoom record. My Zoom record for up until this moment.
Zach
Okay? Yes.
Alex
I'm sorry. God, Delaney's gonna kill me.
Zach
I want to slate one more time, though, so she knows when this happens. Just one slate, so it's obvious. Well, apologize to Delaney.
Alex
I am. This is me apologizing. I'm apologizing to you. Apologizing, Delaney. I'm also apologize for wasting our time.
Zach
All right, slate at 30 just once. So I think we can move on into the chapter. Unless there's any other adorable comments you have about this cover story, Ed.
Ed
Picking up where we left off last time. The entire country is in a panic. There's a. Like the entire island is crying in anguish. Basically, as we zoom out to the. Basically the harbor where the military ships are fighting the government and the. The fighters of Esperia are like. Our only path to survival is independence.
Zach
And is that a purposely timed translation, Steven? For what do you mean the holiday or for the movie Independence Day?
Stephen Paul
Yeah, yeah, it totally is.
Zach
And next channel is that I cut off. Sorry, Brooke.
Ed
Is. Looks like he's trapped in an Uzumaki spiral.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, he is.
Ed
With the. And the sinister Smoking Man. His smoking. And Princess Shuri has sinister looking eyes. And you hear Karum.
Zach
Well, her eyes don't even have pupils or irises. Colors. Yeah, yeah, the colors.
Ed
And Brook sort of kneeling over King's body says, someone call the medic. His majesty is in critical condition.
Kirsten Carey
Bro.
Ed
Hang in there, bro. You're going to be okay. And as the shadow of Emu looms over the situation.
Stephen Paul
Oh, yeah. I didn't even see. I didn't even see that he was, like, sprouting out of the.
Zach
It's just like, sad Mars. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Stephen Paul
Like a boil.
Zach
Yeah.
Ed
And Brooke just continues, bro, bro. And he gets a little mini. A little flashback within this flashback where he's just flashing back to when he met them, when he met Reuben. He says, you a fan of mine, old man? And you hear, hey, I'm not that old. Yo ho ho. I guess I'll call you bro instead. And back to kid Brooke and younger Reuben and get that.
Zach
Still old.
Ed
Another anguished bro.
Marianne
You don't know, Maybe he just looks old.
Zach
He was 21 in that. Just recall that.
Ed
Yeah, it's the rugby nose. Makes him look older.
Stephen Paul
Yeah.
Zach
What did Beethoven look like at 21? That's the question I have.
Alex
He had a blackbeard nose as well.
Zach
Yeah, I forget it.
Stephen Paul
I forget if I mentioned this or if I was there on the recap or not, but I remember, like, the first time that we saw, like, at the start of the flashback, I had Brooke because he. He calls him Aniki throughout, you know, the. The flashback. And we didn't. And we didn't know. We didn't see this little, like, childhood part until a chapter or two in. And so I originally had him calling. Him. Calling Riven boss because, like, it wasn't clear if, like, oh, where you, like, rise up from being, like, a street ruffian or something like that. And. And then we found, you know, this little story of, like, he's calling him Osan, like, like, uncle or old man. And. And then he's like, hey, I'm not that old. And so he's like, okay, so I'll call you big brother instead. And so that. And so I. I switched from basically when Brooke was calling him boss before. That'll have to be bro now, because that. That's what he was calling him all along. So just some behind the scenes.
Zach
Yeah.
Alex
Reading through all of this was like giving me flashbacks of when I was at a Wendy's a couple months ago and a bunch of teens were basically just like, bro,
Ed
this is a Wendy's.
Zach
Damn it. Ed steals my jokes twice in a row. Can't even. Can't even get one of my bad jokes in. Alex, you did it too. Well, Alex. Yeah. You could pick up from there.
Alex
Sure.
Zach
Not Alex. Sorry. Marianne. Oh, my God.
Marianne
No, that's right.
Alex
Yeah. I don't show up until here. No.
Zach
Is I talking to Alex? And then I.
Marianne
Marianne, it's okay. I'm used to it.
Kirsten Carey
What?
Alex
Oh, my God. I'm so sorry.
Marianne
I'm full of shit.
Alex
Don't worry.
Zach
I'm gonna go grovel in a corner.
Marianne
As you should. No, I'm kidding. All right, next panel, we have more Brooke crying over his bro as he screams that word. Bro, bro. We see Emu kind of going off to the side. I don't know if that's probably not the noise he's making, but that's the noise I'm imagining because he's kind of curved.
Kirsten Carey
It is. It is forever in my head now.
Marianne
And Brooke says, hey, didn't anyone hear me call for a damn medicine? And I am presuming this is Emu talking, saying this was an inconvenient time for an interruption. And the door slams shut and we got a nice wide shot of the black flames of. It looks like Imu is retreating or like turning into flames and disappearing because we don't really see the clear shape of. I don't remember the bird one. The bird.
Zach
Old Marcus. Horrors. Marcus.
Ed
Horrors.
Marianne
Yeah, but it looks like that's fading away. As you know, the Zurd. Yeah. Which is an interesting movement sound, but yeah. As Brooke cries over Louvin Reuven, Whichever it is, Reuben sandwich. And Gunko's in the back. Well, Shuri is in the back. She's not Gunko yet, I guess. And then we get a close up on her and she says, brook, that man is already dead. He looks up, breathing heavily. He points to the skull joke.
Zach
I'm just realizing, like a pre skull skull joke, he's already dead. It's very Gower's humor from Brooke in the future. Is that what he's referring to? Okay, go ahead.
Marianne
But Brooke points his sword at the mystery man in the corner and he says, you there. Who are you? What have you done to Princess Shuri? I've been watching over this girl since she was a newborn baby. I know she's not capable of this kind of bloodshed. I know everything about the princess. And then Shuri stands in front of them and says, but Brooklyn, did you know that I was a celestial dragon? Uh, did you know that this man was not my real father? Stop calling him this man. Huh? What are you talking about? Are you King Reuven's legitimate daughter? You're King Reuven's legitimate daughter and heir, of course. Where's the proof? She says, proof? You don't need proof between parents and their children. And she coldly responds, yes, you do. It would have made a huge difference in my life. I've now wasted 16 years I could have spent as a celestial dragon. Do you understand how Angry I am. We get a close up of her with her white out eyes. They demanded a thousand slaves. Wrong. That was because this wretch refused to hand me over. Don't call him that, says Brook. He is a terrible king who let his people die for nothing.
Stephen Paul
And then we transition to the next page as the scene continues. And Shuri says that's why he had to pay the price. If the king dies, the war is over. And Brook protests, but if we lose, then this country becomes a lawless wasteland. And she says, that doesn't matter to me anymore. And then we see this mystery man and it is revealed to be Knights of God, Saint Manmire Guru. And yeah, he is dressed as we've seen before in true one piece fashion with the big kind of rounded boots and doing a classic one piece pose, smoking a cigarette. And he says, I remember you wearing
Ed
like wicked west of the east stockings.
Zach
He's man.
Stephen Paul
Oh, yeah, with the stripe.
Zach
He's man. Meyer manspreading is what he's doing.
Stephen Paul
Oh, he certainly is. Yeah. He says, I remember you, Kendall Squire, the boy with the poofy hair. Not that you were ever allowed to get close to me. As we see under the brim. And what does he have? Two different colored eyes. Happy Father's Day. And they have the same eyes.
Zach
Yes.
Stephen Paul
Right.
Alex
They have the same eyes.
Ed
Yeah.
Zach
Thank you, Alex.
Alex
Yeah.
Zach
You have to check that box off.
Alex
Oh, we're gonna be checking some boxes in this episode.
Ed
What is this? Sharing gun.
Stephen Paul
Yeah. And speaking of proof of parents and children. Yes. Brooke realizes. Oh, this. This explains something. And he. Yes, he. He recoils in shock and falls to the floor as man Meyer Guru stands up and he says, you're. Your eyes. And Aguro continues, Normally I wouldn't come to a backwater like this just to recover a single measly whelp. But her bipolar irises are an extremely rare trait, and the Great One desires her. While it may not have awakened for me, perhaps she can, he says. And then Emu cuts him off and says, thou speakest too much, Guru. Oh, my apologies, Grade one.
Zach
Sometimes the less said the better, you know? You know?
Stephen Paul
Yeah, he's like, you're not the villain here. You don't get to give the monologue. This is, you know, you're stepping on Emu's toes. And so he says, oh, my apologies, Great One. Make it quick, Shuri. As he turns around and. And she has a. A look of determination in her eyes as Brooke, you know, tear stained is just like, huh?
Kirsten Carey
And Shuri approaches And Brook goes, this. This can't be real. I must be dreaming. I. I changed your diapers. I know everything about you, Princess Shuri. And Shuri points her sword at him and says, don't act like I owe you anything. And stop that pathetic sniveling. I want the protection of people stronger than you. And if I get to go to the hol, then I no longer have any need of you. And Brook. Tear. Tears coming out of his eyes, snot coming out of his nose. Very confused. Breathing heavily. And we see him thinking about little baby Shuri, saying, you were always the perfect little angel, but now you look more like a devil, as she prepares his own attack to be used against him. Gavotte. I failed to protect my bro, the man who saved my life. And he drops his sword as she goes in for the kill. Bon avant. And we see her stick the sword straight through Brook's head as it sings. O crows and frogs and slaves and kings, we're all bones when we die. We're all bones in the end. That's all there is to say as he slams to the ground and Cherry and Mr. Man walk away.
Alex
Mr. Man.
Zach
Very promotional scene. Mr. Man.
Alex
Zach, it's time to check a box because he's been stabbed through the head.
Stephen Paul
Oh, dear.
Zach
Oh, damn, you're right.
Marianne
I have to write that down, and it's too late.
Kirsten Carey
Stab through the head and you're to blame.
Zach
So, for those who don't know, we have accidentally. We accidentally named several episodes of the podcast the same title, which was the wrong version of the. Was it shot through the heart? Right.
Ed
It was stabbed through the heart of a bad name.
Alex
As the. Is the song by Bob.
Zach
Yeah. And so it's come. For those who don't remember our joke from 10 years ago, it's become.
Ed
It's from Dretrosa.
Zach
It has to. I have to write it down as a title when it comes.
Marianne
You give Shooty a bad name.
Zach
Oh, damn. No, you're. You're really just adding to this.
Ed
And so this is where Brooke got his broken skull from.
Alex
So I'm also looking at this, too, and I'm looking at the. The Shunk, and I'm thinking, it's Shunk. It's Shunk. It's Shunk. It's in his head.
Zach
We're keeping the music portion.
Stephen Paul
Oh, boy,
Zach
do I have to write that one down, too?
Alex
That's funny.
Ed
I guess Brooke only installed the hinge that allows him to open it like a box after he was resurrected.
Zach
Yes. More than just an App is this okay? I'm gonna save it for when we're done. As you know, I have lots to say on this chapter. It's my turn. So then he dies and. But then he wakes up again as we see the members, presumably of. What were they called?
Stephen Paul
The battle convoy.
Zach
Battle convoy. Thank you. Presumably over him. Captain. Captain. Brooke. He's awake. Oh, it's a miracle. I've never seen anyone survive with a sword struck through his head. Stuck through his head. To be fair, there is one walking around in Elbaf right now.
Kirsten Carey
Yeah, exactly.
Zach
Yeah, I forgot about that. Somehow the sword managed to avoid all the major arteries and conveniently also avoided your brain stem. So the damage covered over by Brooke rudely interrupting the doctor who just saved his life, saying, where's the king? And they're just like, I don't know how much you remember, Captain. Look, we shouldn't tell him too much. It might rattle him. Ouch. Oh, I have such a headache. Did something happen to Brain? Anyway, he says, no. Tell me the truth. And the doctor, whomever responds, we lost Captain. The king's death sealed it. Someone witnessed Princess Shuri being put onto a government ship. Brooke remembers back at the white outed eyes of Princess Shuri or her former self. As the dial. As the explanation continues, many civilians have already fled the country. But what country will take in all these refugees? And you see Reuven. Or I guess this could either be. It's Prok's vision. Okay, I was gonna say it could also just be Reuven still there, but, yeah, they just left him. It's possible they might have just had a run. Yeah, but Reuven having been face. Face flat dead on the floor. Although not with the wings in this one. Or the horns, because that was in the previous one, Right?
Marianne
Yeah, I noticed that he doesn't have it at all in this chapter. And I'm wondering if he had it while he was still alive and then he died, like, right as Brook came in.
Zach
That's what I was thinking.
Stephen Paul
Or was that. Was that like an Otis sleep hallucination? Yeah, when he was drawing the previous chapter.
Zach
Yeah, he's done that. Where he's like, oh, I had planned to do this, but, oh, no, I decided I actually want to do this. So I guess we'll hold off to see if we ever get any closure there, which I'm sure we will. Anyway, he yells kind of like an Anakin Skywalker, end of episode three, you know, and everyone
Ed
do not want.
Kirsten Carey
Oh, not.
Marianne
Not that one. Sorry.
Stephen Paul
Yeah. Do not want.
Zach
No, it could be the same one.
Alex
Do not. I hate sand. Especially when they're in dumplings.
Zach
There it is. There it is. Speaking of really bad taste callbacks. Is this the. The nosebleed that he's bleeding again? Because it's the same exact kind of delivery as when he had the nosebleed after meeting Kandel like a chapter or two ago. Anyway, he's bleeding again. He did have his head stabbed. And we see the close up of him yelling captain. And on the next page, Marianne, what happens?
Marianne
We go back to the present as Brooke, all bones now is leaning over and shaking and crying, saying, back then, I didn't even know about the existence of Devil Fruits. I always thought that I had hallucinated what had happened. Such was the shock I suffered at seeing my savior dead on the ground and the terror I felt at the changed princess. Her new demonic visage. Those were not, were not illusions, but real memories. And we've seen like a panned out shot of Elbaf. Very much on fire, my friends, as it does close ups on everybody. He says while still crying. Do you think it would be all right if I had faith in Princess Shuri just one more time? I particularly love Frankie full on sobbing. Everybody else is sort of shocked.
Zach
That's what Frankie does.
Marianne
And it's peak Frankie.
Kirsten Carey
Mommy's teary.
Marianne
She is. She is.
Zach
Jim BAE looks bored.
Marianne
He's like, that's just his face that's resting.
Zach
Bored face. That's just Jimbo. Just like it's interesting story, you know, could have used a little.
Marianne
All right, can we get on with the phone already?
Zach
Or could have used some more closure there, but. Okay.
Marianne
Yeah. And then we see the ice cube of Kendel, or not Kendel, that. Sorry, Gunko is in the Gunko cube. And he says if she happens to be a victim in all of this. And we get a little mini flashback to her breaking free of whatever mind control has been going on, saying, run, Hook.
Alex
And we can see the girl in the ice.
Marianne
The girl in the ice. Just like Avatar.
Ed
We see the eyes there with the.
Marianne
Yeah.
Ed
Heterochromia.
Marianne
The heterophobia in her eyes. I said it. Okay.
Zach
I wasn't sure if that was a mistake, but. No, but reasonable.
Marianne
That's why Emu wants her. He wants that heterophobia in her eyes.
Zach
We need more heterophobia.
Marianne
Yes. And we got another little snippet flashback of her pre demoning, I guess because I'm papa and mama's daughter, all pouty. And we see her again closer in the ice I want to save Princess Shuri. May I ask for your help in achieving this goal? As he bows down in front of the present Straw hats.
Zach
Alex.
Alex
And wrap us up.
Zach
Yeah.
Alex
Yes. So Jinbei, looking a little less bored and ready to kick some ass, cracks his knuckles and he goes. Do you really need to ask? Let's hurry up and break that block of ice. And Nami is equally
Ed
work on broken on frozen water too.
Alex
Why not? Fisherman Karate works on everything Nami says her post timeskip catchphrase. Maybe lightning will work on it.
Ed
That's your solution to everything.
Alex
That's right, Frankie. Using his post time skip catchphrase. I'll use my radical beam and melt it in one go. I don't think I should use explosives. What can I do to help? Maybe if you could lift a really, really large hammer.
Zach
Stop giving him ideas. If you say it into existence, it won't happen. So that's how one piece works.
Alex
Brooke doesn't even wait for. For the. You know. For anybody to make any sort of decision. He just goes off running with a zuba.
Zach
That is a really good sound effect.
Kirsten Carey
Excellent sound effect.
Stephen Paul
Thank you.
Marianne
That's how I. That's how I run.
Alex
Yeah.
Zach
I always run with Zubba Dubba dubba. Oh, that's an episode title right there.
Ed
Zibbidi babbity boo.
Zach
No.
Alex
Zadybubida boom.
Zach
Well, he is kind of the Zady Bubba. He is.
Ed
He is.
Alex
He's 100% Zibbity Bobbidi Boo.
Zach
Okay. I'll write it down. But I don't like it.
Alex
Hey, wait up, Brooke. And he's just running and crying.
Stephen Paul
Ah.
Alex
And back at the cafeteria in the walrus school. Finally. Luffy. We hear Luffy go.
Marianne
I'm all full.
Alex
That bad guy. That bad news guy's elf7 enemy. Right? And that means he's my enemy. I'm overflowing with strength right now. I can't see anyone beating me.
Zach
Are you gonna do the Vegeta thing here? Cuz that feels. Feels appropriate. No. Yeah.
Alex
This is.
Zach
You blew out your mic on Zoom at least.
Alex
But no.
Zach
That I will win. What was the. I forget the exact. Anyway.
Alex
Go.
Zach
No. Steve needs to be here for this. I like. Go ahead.
Alex
Yeah. So he's. He's finished eating his. What was. It was frozen meat before. Right? But now it's all charred up. Oh yeah. You won't escape my wrath. The. Thank you, Kirby.
Zach
That was good. But not what I was thinking.
Alex
That is. That is. That is my favorite one though. That is my favorite Brian Drummond Vegeta Line. It's. It's super good. He flies off, ready to kick some ass. And here we are. We're back at the fight between Loki and Emu. And Emu's got his big old hammer. He goes, quit going after the kids. Your world government folks sure do fight dirty. And Emu. Emu just. He's just like, Dost thou not know why? Shall I teach thee?
Zach
Marianne, have you not heard this accurate representation? This is Emu. This is his official Marianne. If you pull a Crunchyroll, this is the time.
Marianne
I truly don't. I truly do not.
Zach
Listen to me. I don't have requests often.
Marianne
Okay, okay.
Zach
I do have requests often. But I don't make those requests specifically. Crunchyroll, Marianne, or whomever is listening.
Marianne
Emily.
Zach
Emily. If you have Paul, make Emu. Emo. That's all we're asking for.
Ed
Go ahead.
Alex
I left my zipper pants at home. 800 years ago. Thy. Thy kind suffered defeat in order to save thy children. We go to the next page and
Marianne
Loki says, yeah, the Shakespearean sounding words. I'm just like picturing him being like, shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Zach
Yes. Yes.
Alex
A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.
Zach
I wish I could make this into an episode title, but it's was really translated.
Alex
No, not at all. And Loki goes, what do you mean, 800 years ago? And Emu continues. The nature of a race does not change in mere centuries. Friedrich Nietzsche. Simply abduct thy children and I can control thee at will. Thou might not know what is happening to thee, but history repeats regardless. It's already too late. Thou art my slaves. And while he's saying this, we see Zaza Gabor taking all the children from the Zaza Freaky.
Zach
Zaza Freaky.
Alex
Zaza Freaky. I kept saying that to myself all. All week. That.
Zach
That week that came out. It was like a month ago.
Alex
Yeah. And Brogy and Hyrudin are struggling in this. In this. In these panels as well. And Loki's pretty pissed off. He goes, what is he talking about? And he's about to strike him. But then here comes Luffy at the speed of light. He's got his. His arm stretched and ready to go. Emu gets caught totally off guard. And Luffy smacks him on right in the face. Punches him right in the face with a big hockey punch. With a kabam. And he says, you get out of Elbaf right now. Big punchies.bigpunches.com.
Zach
we own that domain. So go to bigpunchies.com.
Alex
we do. I really. And what a great way to end on big punchies dot com. And I believe there's a chapter next week, so. Hooray.
Zach
Yes, there is a chapter next week. I want to say the way. First of all, I love that panel of Luffy at the end. The one of him approaching. It's like he's saying it like, as if he's been telling this guy this for weeks. Like, get out of Elbaf. What are you doing? I've known you for years.
Marianne
Even though he's been there for like five minutes.
Zach
Yeah, five seconds. Oh, well, yeah, but Luffy just.
Marianne
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Zach
Anyway, Kirsten, I know you're the most time pressed, so I will go for you first. What were your thoughts on this chapter?
Kirsten Carey
Well, I have several. Thank you for asking. One thing I've been thinking about just sort of big picture during this whole flashback is like, I mean, I was very excited to come on for the Music Kingdom and apparently coming on for the Music Kingdom's demise. But there's something sort of prophetic and interesting about having a story where, like, an authoritarian government is destroying the kingdom that makes musical instruments. It really has me wondering what happened to musical instrument production after this. Like. Like, it has me wondering whether or not procuring musical instruments under the world government became harder because music is so often a tool of liberation and resistance.
Ed
The drums of liberation.
Kirsten Carey
Exactly. So there's something. There's something there. And something like, pretty profound, I think. I really sort of wish we had more time to learn about the kingdom and what it does and like, how exactly how central it is to, like, is it the kingdom that made musical instruments? Is it like the center of musical education? And what are the consequences of that being destroyed? We won't get that. But I really want to know. The other thing that I really, really wish was made more clear in this chapter is whether or not the relationship between Manmare and Candel was consensual.
Ed
It's not clear. That's.
Kirsten Carey
It's not clear. I'm choosing to believe that it was.
Marianne
I'm sure it wasn't. It's one piece and they're celestial dragons.
Zach
I have thoughts on this, but I'll save it for.
Kirsten Carey
No, no.
Ed
Implication, of course, is that Guro is Gunko's father.
Zach
Implication. It is basically said.
Ed
And.
Zach
Yeah.
Ed
And his Sharingan was too weak to serve as Emu's vessel, but hers is much more powerful.
Zach
Can we not.
Marianne
He only has homophobia in his eyes, not heterophobia.
Zach
Yeah, I see. I see. Heterophobia.
Kirsten Carey
The reason that I am choosing to believe it was consensual is that Candel has that line that she loves somebody who is stronger than her, and she wants to get stronger to impress him. And I feel like at this point, it's pretty obvious that that wasn't Leuven, so she must have been talking about him, right?
Zach
Can I go through my shtick or is that gonna.
Kirsten Carey
Please, please go through.
Zach
I was writing this while my daughter was crying, so I'm gonna. Let's see. I'm just gonna read what I had
Ed
lots of time then.
Zach
Yes, it's a. Yeah, whatever. This only took me, like, five minutes, but this chapter solidified my thoughts on the fact that Kandel was seeking to be a Celestial. That's why she had a child with Mr. Manmire. This also gives us the chance in the present day for Brook to find out that the true traitor, quote, unquote, was Candel all along. There's no way that Garou. Garou. Right. Would even acknowledge Candel as human if she had not been trying to curry his favor. And I don't think that an ordinary commoner would be worthy of the trait, you know, that Imu is after and that the story is not over.
Ed
Gunko, will you say, acknowledge her as a human? But, like, Celestial Dragons are not human. They're. They're. They're better than humans. That's the thing.
Zach
Well, that's my hope.
Ed
So.
Zach
I mean, he does call her a whelp. Like, specifically, like, we have seen how Celestial. My. My take on this is that this is not. It was a consensual relationship in that Candel, much like someone like York wanted to be a Celestial Dragon. And that. That and, you know, to be by man Meyer's side. Does he have a sword that. I wonder, too. We don't see one. But, like, for whatever reason, you know, that's what she wanted to do. The. The reasons I say this is, first, she's super evil. The first time we see her, she's like, ah, yes, a wonderful performance. With her hands curled Mr. Burns style. Am I?
Stephen Paul
I may be editorializing.
Marianne
Liking music makes you evil.
Zach
Yes. You heard that, Kirsten?
Kirsten Carey
Damn. I had no idea you thought this about.
Zach
No, I did not.
Alex
I think what Zach is trying to say is that opera is the most evil of all that I've watched Star
Zach
Trek Voyager, and you're absolutely right.
Alex
Yeah. I feel like if. If you like Palpatine, what's he doing in Revenge of the Sith. He's watching opera.
Zach
Yeah.
Alex
And then divulging Danikin that there is a thing.
Zach
Yeah.
Alex
Prophecy. That.
Zach
Seriously.
Alex
Something that millennials and xennials are going to quote for years to come.
Zach
Have you ever heard. Have you ever heard of Manmire, the wise man? Whatever the hell.
Alex
Mayonnaise, man. Mayonnaise, man.
Zach
Mayonnaise. Yes. Thank you, Alex, for clarifying. It's not just that opera is the most evil of music. Don't actually think. Although it, like, cinematically can be, like, to, you know, set a scene sometimes to a very.
Alex
Yeah.
Kirsten Carey
Dramatic.
Zach
Dramatic. And I would. I don't know, like the fact that everything Kandel has done and kind of the quietness of her disappearance in the story really, I think, lend credence to the fact that. I don't think. I think this is consensual in the way that she wanted to be a celestial dragon, and she thought that to be a celestial dragon, she would, you know. Oh, look at Manmire there. Look at. He looks good. I don't know what the hell she was thinking in that moment, but. And then at the end, before she dies, she's like, it'll be fine. I'll fix this. And she probably went there to talk to him or something, and he shot her. Like, that sounds right to me. And also the fact. The way Manmire describes Kandel, like, he clearly had some relationship. The fact that he remembers that she. That he. That Brooke was her squire.
Kirsten Carey
I mean, the fact that he remembers her at all.
Zach
Yes, that's what I mean. Like, when I was saying, like, you wouldn't treat him as. You wouldn't treat her as human. Like, basically, I am trying to remember what Garland did with Shanks's mom, who is nameless, I believe. Like, she. I mean, he did just stab her. Shoot her. I forgot which. But he didn't really, like, acknowledge her as, like, you know, having any.
Alex
No, he wanted a kid. He wanted. He wanted offspring.
Stephen Paul
Right, right.
Alex
This guy clearly didn't.
Zach
Yeah.
Alex
So something's up. Like I. I said this last time, and I think that the. The reason. I don't think it's the same thing as Bonnie's parentage is mostly just because Oda would be repeating a plot beat that he did literally the last arc, and that's vanilla. It doesn't change the fact that celestial dragons are awful. And that would probably be the case. The non consensual aspect of it.
Zach
Oh, yeah. I don't think he would have a problem doing that.
Marianne
My question I guess if this theory, with this theory is. If this is the case, then why did Kendel return to the kingdom?
Alex
That's a good question.
Zach
Do we know that she left?
Kirsten Carey
I don't. Because he came to her.
Alex
Yeah. No, no, he was. Yeah, yeah. She was in the kingdom the whole time.
Zach
I don't think she ever left.
Marianne
In that case, still, why did she go to Reuven? Why didn't she go off?
Zach
Because she probably with him. Because he probably was like, no, you're not coming back with me, like after that.
Alex
And maybe I feel like maybe there is some sort of a reason why, like, you know, oh, well, I guess if she's the queen, then something, something, something. There's a lot here that's unsaid and I feel like.
Zach
Yeah.
Alex
And I feel like it's because all of this was because it was Brooks pov.
Ed
Yeah.
Alex
And like, if that's fair, if it was like an all encompassing flashback, then we probably would have seen Marcus Mars there too. Right now we just see like Emu hanging on like some sort of weird goiter. Like, to this.
Zach
Yes.
Alex
It's shadow, you know, like, it's. There's, there's a lot here that's still unsaid and it's too, it's too gosh darn random to be quinky dink.
Zach
Agreed.
Kirsten Carey
It feels like Leuven knew to some extent.
Alex
Oh, he definitely did. Like, if you like, that's why he has such a crap, like a crabby demeanor. Like the entirety of post, post marriage. I feel like that's, you know, but he's also like crying over her grave. And I wonder if it's.
Zach
It explains his relationship with Brooke, I think. Although I guess that's before. But you don't, you don't really see them interacting ever. Reuven and Kandel, aside from like Brooke reminiscing as to when they got married, which you just see this kind of like cartoonish like, oh, they're married, yay. But you never actually are seeing them interact. I, I agree 100% with Alex's take there.
Alex
I just. There's. There's no, there's no pieces to put together is the problem. There's no wherewithal.
Zach
I feel like Oda has given us the crumbs and the question is, will he. And I hope if he doesn't, like, address it, I would be disappointed. But I do personally feel like he narratively has explained it.
Alex
So right now we have, we have two characters. We have two characters that could shed light on the situation when Shuri comes to. She could probably give whatever man Mayor told her whatever happened before Brooke walks into the room. Right. And then Emu is there. Emu's there too. And clearly Oda is keeping a secret as to what these eyes are supposed to signify. You know, until a time where Emu can properly monologue for an entire chapter.
Zach
Can I say, it's also really interesting that. And then I'm gonna stop talking. It's really interesting that Emu is still in his original silhouette when he's at this. I mean, not surprising, but I.
Kirsten Carey
We've talked a lot about, like, through Marcus Mars.
Alex
Yeah. Sort of like how. Sort of like how in God Valley he did the same thing with Saturn.
Zach
But it's like. Okay, if this is. If the form that we're seeing in Elbaf today is his quote unquote true form, why is this silhouetted? Like, what are we still. What's being either hidden from the.
Stephen Paul
Because he's not. Yeah, he's not in full power here. He's just in his, like, spy mode.
Alex
Yeah. Plus it's a lot easier to draw him in blob mode, too.
Zach
Yeah, could be that, too.
Marianne
Could just be some sort of, like, shadow form that he takes because he can't manifest because manifesting himself on the ground hurts him.
Zach
Steven.
Kirsten Carey
Yeah.
Zach
I'm sorry, Kirsten, do you have other thoughts? Sorry. On the chapter.
Kirsten Carey
Oh, my other. I mean, my other hot take and main thought about the chapter is that while rereading it through, I sort of wonder, like, Luffy saying right now, I can't see anyone beating me. Feels like he's about to get beaten 100%.
Alex
Yeah. I don't think he's gonna win this.
Kirsten Carey
I one potential scenario, which would be very interesting. And also maybe this is because I'm reading Mistborn and drawing a thousand parallels between Mistborn and the world government right now. But I sort of like, what if Luffy and Loki get captured and brought to Mary Jo or some other world government base, and from here the straw hats have to go save Luffy would be an interesting turn of offense.
Alex
I definitely like that. This definitely crossed my mind that, you know, if Luffy is to lose here, then what. What does that entail? Like, I think I might have brought this up on the podcast or outside of it, but, like, oh, what if Luffy dies and he goes to the astral plane or whatever, which is like the third tier of Yggdrasil here, and, you know, then has a weird come to Jesus moment and has a power up or something. I don't know. But there's got to be, like, there's some.
Zach
I hope he doesn't die, die, but. Because I feel like that takes stakes out of things sometimes when you do that to a character.
Alex
Personally, when a character dies, you think he takes the stakes out.
Zach
Except Brook, who. Well, yeah.
Kirsten Carey
Yo ho ho. Yeah. I don't know. You mean, like, if a character dies but then comes back, then it's sort of like. Well, they can die and come back and it's fine.
Alex
Right. It's like a weird plot device, I guess.
Zach
Yeah. I mean, I think you're dragon, specifically where. Yeah, well.
Marianne
And Luffy kind of already died to awaken Gear five, so.
Kirsten Carey
That's true.
Zach
Yeah. But his heart restarted with the power of music, not opera. That would be evil. Yeah.
Kirsten Carey
Emu's drums are opera.
Stephen Paul
The drums of opera.
Kirsten Carey
The drums of opera.
Zach
It's the drums of the opera.
Marianne
That's a thing that opera's really known for, is its drum solos.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, the drum solos, the performers, they're just like, we're going to take five here. The drummer's got his solo coming up.
Zach
Trump solos at the opera. Okay. Anything else, Kirsten?
Kirsten Carey
No, that's it. Those are my three hot takes.
Zach
Stephen, do you have any hot takes?
Stephen Paul
My hot. Okay, my hot take would be that, like, this is kind of sad to say, but, like, I feel like all of Luffy's stuff at the very end of this, like, did nothing for me. Like, we were. I mean, we were kind of joking, like, with the crew, where they were all doing their. Like, here's my one thing that I do in the post time skip. Like, Nami's like, I'll use my lightning, and Frankie's like, I'll use my radical beam. And it. And it really did feel like Luffy. That was like, the most yada yada Luffy, like, he's like, I ate food.
Ed
I'm full.
Stephen Paul
Now I'm gonna go beat him. And then he just kind of shows up and punches him, which sucks, because,
Zach
you know, you like that.
Stephen Paul
Yeah. I mean, like. Like, yes, it's satisfying to see him, but it just felt like very kind of color by numbers, you know? Like, it feels very much like something we've seen a hundred times before. And. And so I. You know, it didn't feel as special as I would.
Zach
86. No go.
Stephen Paul
Yeah. Yeah. But, you know, we'll. We'll see what happens with that. I do. I. There's a part of me that definitely kind of appreciates the. The sort of like, you're trying to play connect the dots with the. With the flashback, but like, there just aren't enough of them to make a coherent picture. And I, I do feel like obviously there's some chance that we will get a little bit more of that. Like we said, when, when, you know, let's say Shuri awakens, since obviously we know you given the. The. The dummy reversi effect here, that all of this stuff she was saying to Brooke to, you know, to. To hurt him and to push him away from was not her, you know, her real thoughts. That's her, you know, evil, evil universe thoughts. And so, yeah, there's a. There's a chance we'll, we'll get more of this story. But I do. It does strike me as one of those things where, like, especially later on in the story, I think Oda is fine with certain things going unsaid. And you could argue that maybe some of that is like. Well, he doesn't want to get too like, into the grisly details of like, you know. Right. Was this, like, Celestial Dragons going on another, you know, rampage of, you know, flings in the hay, so to speak. Or. Or was it, you know, Kendel had. It had a, you know, a really unsavory side that we don't know about. I think that he enjoys in this case probably like, leaving us kind of in the dark to wonder what those answers could be. And I, I kind of like that. I. I like that he can do that from time to time and not have to spell everything out whether there's like an obvious answer or whether, like there isn't really a clear answer at all. You know, I think there's a Val. There's. Sometimes there's a value in not being too pedantic about it, but yeah, really interesting to see. I like the, you know, mayor. Mayor McMahon having the, the eyes because that's. That's a. Fun details. A nice way to. To really just like, tie that part in a bow. Although the, the significance of like, well, you know, his eyes look the same as. As Shuri's, so what is it about hers that are different that make her, you know, a vessel? I suppose it's not. Not. Not clear on the face of it yet, but I do feel like we'll.
Marianne
We'll.
Stephen Paul
We will find that out for sure at some point.
Marianne
For sure, you might say.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, for sure. Yes. Yes. But yeah, it's. I was a little surprised to see this. Us going back to the. The present day as soon as this chapter I. You know, before this chapter, I would have thought it would be another two or three maybe, but you know, at least. At least it didn't last too long. You know, like we were afraid of when we first saw, like, Brooke was getting another flashback and he ended up, I think, kind of closing that off in a. In a fairly economical. Fairly economical way. But. Yeah.
Zach
Can I ask you about specifically Bipolar Irises? My.
Stephen Paul
I think there was someone who. In our dispiece.
Zach
Yeah. Okay, so you know what? We'll save a piece together then. That's a good reason to. Marianne,
Marianne
it's been interesting hearing your guys commentary because I didn't necessarily think of the potential of Kendel being not so lovable, but I am curious and it definitely makes me think. Okay, so we've really only seen this story or heard this story told by one perspective. There are still a lot of things that need answering, even if it's simple things like, why is she called Gunko now and not Shuri? Especially when, like, Manmire called her Shuri.
Zach
Sorry, before I forget, because I'm gonna. Is Garou and Gunko like, similar in like, structure?
Stephen Paul
They start with goofy.
Zach
They do. Okay, sorry, go ahead.
Stephen Paul
We all start with goo, though.
Marianne
That's true. We begin as goo, into goo, we return.
Alex
No, that's the Human Instrumentality Project.
Marianne
Right?
Kirsten Carey
We're all goo in the end.
Marianne
Yep, yep, yep.
Zach
I'll write that down.
Marianne
We're all goo in the end.
Zach
Except it's gonna be spelled G U. Okay, go ahead.
Marianne
Yes. But, yeah, I mean, I liked it well enough. It. I felt like it went by pretty quick. Like, I. I also. I mean, I guess with last week's or, well, two weeks ago chapter I didn't like, that was kind of a. Okay, we're getting close to the end of this story, at least from Brook's point of view. So I didn't really figure we'd have a whole lot left of this flashback, but I wasn't expecting it to like, kind of go with the. Okay, now Luffy is punching Emu in the face. I mean, I'm not like, surprised by that, but I'm like, like, oh, okay. Because now we've got multiple different storylines that are kind of almost have nothing to do with each other. Like Brook's flashback and the stuff with Shuri Gunko. And then like the whole giant side of things are like two very. I mean, they're connected by Emu, I guess, but. And the dummy reverse idea. But like, I don't know, it felt sort of like okay. We're doing Brook's thing. Oh, yeah, the main plot, right? Yeah, we should. Yes, the main plot. So I don't know, I kind of like, I read it and I went, oh, okay, that's a chapter. And I didn't, like, dislike it. And I mean, I liked it well enough, but it didn't necessarily stand out to me, which is like, again, it feels like this Luffy punching Emu in the face thing is supposed to be another one of those, like, big, epic Luffy punches somebody in the face moments. And maybe in the end anime it will be. But, like, for the chapter, I was just like, yep, he did it again. Cool. Well, that's nice to see, I guess. But, like, also, I. I mean, I know Emu has been introduced to the story, but we haven't really seen him do that much. Like, we know that he has done evil, but I feel like he hasn't done evil to characters we. At least to me, that we care as much about. So I'm like, it doesn't feel the world government, presumably.
Zach
That's the thing.
Marianne
He is. But, like, I don't know, this. This. This punch. I mean, obviously it's not gonna. He's not gonna be defeated. Luffy's not even gear five when he punches him.
Zach
But, yeah, I don't think anyone thought he was done. Oh, that's a free game.
Marianne
Because most of the time when, you know, Luffy does a punch like that, it's like, oop. And they're done. You know, like, like the. The bellamy punch, the St. Charles punch. One and done. Like, obviously that's not going to be the case here, but it feels like Luffy wants it to be.
Zach
Yes, I'm sure he does. Yeah.
Marianne
You know, but, like, that's clearly not what's gonna happen. So I'm like, I'm. I'm curious as to what's happening next, but maybe the. I liked the sort of evil Gunko reveal stuff of the, like, actually, this is my real dad and blah, blah, blah, blah. But, like, I don't know, the chapter didn't necessarily specifically stand out to me over the last several. You know, that makes sense.
Zach
It does. Alex, thoughts?
Alex
Yeah, I mean, I feel like we kind of covered most of my thoughts already just because it's a pretty cut and dry chapter. I do think that. Yeah, it's cool. I thought the entire time about, like, do we know where Brooke got his scar from? And I guess, yeah, we. We first see him with it when he's introduced in his original flashback, so. Part of me was like, yeah, I guess. I guess, you know, whatever is going to come to a head here. No pun intended. You know, I think it's kind of fun that we got that. The origin of how he got. How I got these scars. I. I like that man. Mayor is a different. Like, a new guy. I think we're speculating, like, oh, I bet it's so and so. Or such and such.
Zach
Same.
Alex
Yeah. That close up of his eyes kind of reminds me of Alex from Clockwork Orange a little bit. So I wonder if that's at all on purpose.
Stephen Paul
I feel like it has to be. Right, because he's got the little eyelashes pattern.
Alex
And based on Lafitte's design, we know that Oda is a fan of the Droog design. Yeah, I was sort of hoping for a like. And then Brook became a pirate. Like, you know, a little bit of a coda to this, but I guess this is less, you know, less about, like, Brook being, like. And then I became a pirate. And here's the first, you know, the first, you know, voyage that we had as the Rumbar pirates. No, no, it's sort of all leading up to Brook's little freak out here. And I do love this moment where we come out of the flashback and Brook is very vulnerable, and he's very candid about everything, about how he didn't even know about Devil Fruits at that point and how he really thought that he was hallucinating all of that. All that, like, demonic stuff. And I think that, like, you know, it's kind of neat that we see that perspective from a character in this particular arc with the Domi Versi stuff going on, as opposed to just like, oh, we gotta fight these demons, and if we kill them, they're. They'll turn back. Yay. But this is somebody who's like, oh, I've seen these demons before, but I thought it was just a dream, you know, I think that's. I think that's an interesting angle, and I think it's really great to give Brook that angle because I feel like Brook has needed. He's always needed a little bit more for his character, and I'm looking forward to whatever reunion they're going to have. And I do wonder if it's going to be a fleeting one based on what we saw, what happened to Saint Saturn after Emu took away his power there. Yeah. I think that there's a possibility here that Emu is done with Gunko and that we're going to see this and it's going to be kind of heartbreaking, I think, to me, because all the characters that we've met in this arc, I feel. I feel quite attached to Shuri now because I think the flashback does a really good job of painting her relationship with Brook. But yeah, no, I'm. I'm kind of with. With Steven here, we're like, oh, yeah, Luffy. Here's Luffy punching. I think it's a really cool panel at the end. But yeah, I don't know. Ultimately, I don't think that this is going to be a fight that he
Zach
can win, I think. Alex. So she would be 80. How old would she be? She'd be so 70 years ago and she was 7 when. That's 77, right? Something like that.
Stephen Paul
So even if she was a teenager,
Zach
but the flashback started 70 years ago and she was 7 when it started
Alex
and she was 16 when she got. Got taken to the Holy Land. But we don't know when she was imbued with Imu's power. Right.
Zach
I guess my point is, in lieu of that, she would be 77 years old today. So even if she got st. Saturned for lack of Saturn, she'd just be an elderly. She would be an elderly woman, which I actually think is like, not hurt. There's like a. There's a heartbreaking aspect to it. Like, it's like, you know, this little girl that you knew becomes this, you know, older woman while you're.
Alex
No, there's. There's definitely.
Zach
It's definitely still very. It would still.
Alex
Yeah, it can make the beach. That makes you Old joke. I feel like. I think that, like, when you think about it, it is really heartbreaking in that because. Because Gunko. I'm sorry, Shuri, whoever, when she's talking about, oh, I'm a celestial dragon, she's got the horns and the whited out eyes, and it seems like she's not really in her right mind. And I feel like when she snaps out of this, when she comes to, it's just gonna be like, oh, my God, the last time I had my own thoughts, that was 80 years ago or whatever. And to me, that's incredibly tragic to live your entire life without having any of your own thoughts until the end.
Zach
It's exactly the line she says earlier. Where is it that, like, I have wasted the last 16 years of my life when I could have been exactly like the exact.
Alex
It's gonna be like the reverse of that, I think, and
Zach
deep tragedy. Which is why I don't think we're done with this story. I mean, we're not. There's no way.
Ed
I.
Alex
Now, I think that, like, I think we. To Marianne. Were you talking about it earlier? About how, like, what's the point of the flashback, really? Like, how does it tie into everything?
Marianne
Not even that. It's just. That's not even what. That's the point. It's more that, like, it's. That it's a completely different story to the main story, and it feels like a distraction, even though it is an interesting one.
Alex
I do think that, like, I keep thinking about it and where all the flashbacks are placed in this arc, and it's very messy, and I think it'll probably read better once everything is said and done.
Zach
Yeah.
Alex
Once all the pieces have been played. But it's definitely. It definitely is. It definitely does seem like. Like a diversion or. Yeah, it. The dissonance couldn't be. Yeah.
Ed
I.
Zach
This might be one of those examples of, like, us as readers and the expectations we have as readers being like, okay, we're expecting X, Y, and Z to happen, and maybe X, Y, and Z do happen, but this was a story about A, B, and C the whole time.
Alex
You know, this sort of is like.
Zach
Like, Dressrosa kind of almost. Although that's.
Alex
It does remind me a lot of Dressrosa in. In that way.
Marianne
It's been. Only, though it's really killing the momentum of the, like, big fight.
Alex
Yes, 100%. And I think that was my. That was my big problem with God Valley was that it just sort of. Yeah, it just destroyed momentum for this one. I gave it a pass because it's Brooks flashback, but.
Zach
And the momentum wasn't as. Like, the Oda did do his thing that he always does before flashbacks where he's like, oh, this is where everyone is, and this is the moment. And then, boom, we're leaving. And then when he. And then when we come back, oh, this is what everyone was doing. And boom, someone's getting punched in the face. As Steven said, this is all kind of painting by numbers, you know, sort of. But I like this one. I don't really think killed the momentum for me because, like, we were gonna be waiting for Luffy to power back up either way.
Alex
Sure.
Zach
Like, do the Goku and the chamber thing and whatever.
Alex
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I initially thought that he wasn't gonna be at full strength because he's been eating, you know, frozen and scorched food or whatever.
Zach
Like, there's, like, a frozen and scorched food. Sounds pretty good when you're hungry.
Alex
I Guess so. Freezer burn. I. The thing that. The thing that kind of like, gave me pause was that Emu didn't see Luffy coming, like, at all. And I think that's, like, sort of the curious thing for me about Emu. Yeah. I'm like, yeah, I guess he's not at full strength or whatever if he's on Earth. Right. So, like, it seems that, like, there are certain characters that can kind of tangle with him. Like, he's going toe to toe with Loki, basically. Sanji, he was able to block one of his moves, and Luffy was able to sort of punch him out of nowhere. So, like, there's something about his, like, I don't know, this all powerful, like, presumably, you know. Yeah, the all powerful character in the series getting sort of not to be a power scaler about this.
Stephen Paul
But it's a tricky balance, right?
Alex
Yeah.
Stephen Paul
Like, he needs to be, you know, he needs to be beatable to. For the story to work, but also, like, you want him to be more imposing than any other villain, hopefully, or something.
Zach
Yeah, I am still.
Alex
Well, I'm not, like. So the way I. I see this because we have our fight matchups now, right? Like, looks like Zoro and Sanji are going to get their officer fights, and then Luffy is going to fight Emu, and I don't want what I'm. I'm rooting for them to. To save the kids. But I think it can go either way now because we're so close to the end of the series. You know, IMU's waxing, you know, poetic. Poetic about the cyclical nature of history. And I do feel like, you know, I don't think that this is just gonna end like a. I mean, Greg said this, like, ages ago. Like, oh, well, the fact that the banquet's happening at the beginning of the arc is a bad sign for things to kind of.
Zach
That's been in my mind. Mind the whole arc. Yeah, that then.
Alex
And yeah, I just keep thinking about, like, well, when's the shoe gonna drop? Because, like, yeah, it looks like our friends might be able to eke this one out, but. But to what extent?
Zach
I've been also thinking.
Alex
And that's all for me, by the way.
Zach
Oh, sorry. I know we've talked about before, like, the. I feel like Emu being beatable might be a more interesting story choice because I think we've discussed this before, like, Blackbeard being. I forget how we tied it in specifically, but basically, Blackbeard getting the power of Emu or something is a Much more terrifying notion. Or like, I do kind of like the. The idea of Emu being like this relic of a forgotten age and a connection to that. However, also because of that, his absence, I think creates a lot more interesting potential storylines for Oda. Like, I actually think that there's a lot more. I don't know. Like, I understand he was introduced as this, like, representative force of the world government that Luffy could punch in the face, as he does does this week. But I also think that it provides us with a chance to kind the world governments and the world government and the. And the nobles and the Celestial Dragons or whatever you want to call them, have been on their knees for quite some time at this point. Maybe not in the story, but at least for us. Like, this is a potential chance to knock them back on their heels. And I think that would create some really interesting power vacuums and create kind of that ominous feel you get every time you see Blackbeard. Like the fact and the Katarina Devon thing with Saturn.
Alex
Right.
Zach
There's just like, a lot of stuff that's like, could set up for. Oh, maybe Emu's not as strong as he seems.
Alex
Well, so, yeah, I think a way that this could go is that. That, you know, the Straw hats win the day and Emu is. Emu is defeated here, but then goes back to Mary Joy huffing and puffing, being like, oh, my God, I can't believe, you know, Joy Boy or whatever is this strong. And then suddenly Blackbeard shows up because, you know, Lafitte was at Mary Joy, and they're trying to do some sort of. They're starting some sort of operation there. Right. And I feel like, you know that
Zach
they were doing the delivery of supplies with the UMIT Shipping thing.
Alex
Yeah, yeah. And I think that, like, you know, Blackbeard's connection to rocks and rocks.
Zach
Yes.
Alex
You know, I'm gonna be back here someday, just you wait or whatever.
Zach
And that would also make that tie in a lot better, the God Valley stuff into this.
Alex
It would. And I also think that it would give maybe like. Like, hey, next time Blackbeard sees Luffy, he's gonna have Emu's power and say something like, hey, it's all thanks to you, Straw Hat, for weakening him for me so I could. So Luffy is also sort of to blame for Blackbeard becoming this monster potentially. I think that's good. Now we're just diving into theory crafting.
Marianne
But isn't there always something about every time Nika appears, he destroys the world in some way.
Zach
Yep. Yep.
Alex
Something like that. Right. That's the. I mean, if we're gonna. If we.
Zach
I have to read looking at the mural thing again.
Alex
The mural. The mural prophecy. I feel like you don't have to do it now. I mean, we can also save that for a different episode. Because I feel like we're constantly dipping back into this thing reasonably well.
Marianne
And I think you could be right. I wonder if like his Blackbeard's potential. If this is how the story goes. Which I think it could be really interesting if his potential motivation is also like. He wants to. Like Luffy just wants to be king of the Pirates. Blackbeard might want to rebuild the world for himself. Or the way he says things. And it. It would give him an interesting motivation that isn't just Ra.
Kirsten Carey
I'm evil.
Marianne
Like, you know, Let me.
Zach
I just want to read the Third World because it does kind of fit into what we're saying.
Marianne
Okay.
Zach
Within the chaos there was emptiness. So imu. Potentially. The inconvenient remnants recall the promised day and hear the voice of the Half Moon. The sun God dances and laughs, guiding the world to its end. The sun returns and brings a new morning. And they will surely.
Alex
Well, I'm more interested in what's the in the second world because I think that's what's currently happening right now.
Zach
Within the void there was breath. The forest God tamed demons and the sun spread the fires of war. Those of the Half Moon dreamed. Those of the moon dreamed. Man killed the sun and became God. And the Sea God stormed. And they will never meet. I think it's. I think we're supposed to be between the second and third. From how I was like inferring things like I think the second. We're in the middle to where we are now.
Alex
I think we're in the second. And then the third is basically the end of one piece. Like that.
Zach
No, I agree. I. I think the second has happened. It sucks.
Alex
We keep having to relitigate whatever this is because of breadcrumbs. Yep.
Zach
We love breadcrumbs. That's what we live off of Here.
Alex
Here. Yeah.
Zach
They're delicious.
Alex
I have nothing on this chapter, by the way.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, we're birds.
Zach
We're birds. What was it we were saying? We're like Luffy. Even if it's frozen and burnt at the same time. You know, we're.
Marianne
I mean, it makes sense. That's. That's the. Maybe that's why. Big news. Morgan's is a bird. Cuz he's fighting off the finding all the crumbs and making up stories full circle. Well, we are big news Morgans. Big news Morgans is all of us.
Zach
We are on the cruise. That's what that song's about. Anyway, that'll do it for the manga. We have more of this to discuss and piece together, as we hinted at, which we'll go through in a moment. For those on Patreon, stick around and hear our alternate title and image discussion. But everyone else, see you in the next segment. If you've been stabbed through the head, you'll understand that this is the piece Together segment where we take your questions, comments, theories, and realize that opera is evil. Was that spongebob reference I just did? I think it was. I don't know. I think it was. I think it was my very rare happens once in a blue moon. Alex, what's our first Brah Brah brah.
Alex
It's time for dispiece Brah brah. This. This first one's from the 22nd. That was last week, right? So I guess I'll read it. This is RCD who says hey Opp, do you think we will get another straw hat before the end of the manga? After Yamato, I don't have any hope for it. Also, what toppings do you like on your pizzas?
Zach
I'm pretty boring with pizza. So why aren't you all going?
Stephen Paul
I like black olives.
Marianne
I am also a black olive fan. But put mushrooms on there and if they're available, artichoke hearts as well.
Alex
Ooh, that's nice. My classic combo is pepperoni and mushroom. I love pepperoni and mushroom as a combo. But I like it hot. Some like it hot. I like it hotter. So put jalapenos on that pizza too along those your ass it.
Zach
I do like spicy pizza Chicago style. I like things in it New York style. I'm or like Italian style. I like want my classic with there's exceptions. Like I there are like I do like ones with like spicy olive oil or something like that.
Alex
I've been pretty. I've been pretty. Like I've been pretty thumbs up about Detroit style. Detroit style.
Zach
Yeah, it's and I'm glad they're having
Alex
a renaissance and Emmy squared. It's like a little chain. If you like they have a they have a pie that's pepperoni and calabrian chilies and it's really freaking good.
Zach
I mean I'm sorry I'm still. I. I gotta be in New York's. New York's number one with the pizza. I can't.
Alex
Well, because of the water. Right, because of the water.
Zach
And they'd also kick me out of the state if I ever. But seriously, though, it is the best. Like, I'm sitting anymore.
Alex
I think you're fine. You're safe.
Zach
No, they kick you out of the tri state area.
Stephen Paul
You.
Zach
If you think about it.
Alex
All right, well, anyway, nowhere to go.
Zach
I was walking there.
Alex
Oh, the other question. Will we get another straw hat before the end of the manga? I don't think so.
Zach
I mean, how do you define straw hat? Like.
Alex
Yeah, I mean, at this point, all the allies count, right?
Zach
Yamato? Well, Loki, maybe, because of the way that that was presented.
Alex
Yeah. All right. Big Mike says here's a Yamato related question to make up for his. What?
Zach
No, Big Mike's questions are always. Oh. Inducing. So.
Alex
Yeah, I mean, I haven't. I have not. I haven't vetted this yet. So I'm just going.
Zach
Let's go for this ride and see what happens.
Alex
Yep. Delaney, make sure you hit your.
Zach
Keep your finger on the delete just in case. Scared.
Alex
Let's see. Here is a Yamato related question to make up for his absence during Pride Month this year. Please enjoy. Frame. If Yamato got lucky and got to do a mixed bath with Okiku and her attractive trans girlfriends, how big of a nosebleed do you think he'd get from seeing them naked? Okay,
Marianne
Next.
Alex
Yeah, you know what?
Zach
Next.
Alex
Yamato's not Sanji.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, no, that's true. Right?
Marianne
We've never seen him, like, fanboy gush
Zach
over, like, anyone except the Ace.
Marianne
Yeah, well, yeah, but even then, they were bros. Yeah.
Alex
To seriously answer a joke question. There it is.
Zach
That's. That's a ship. I'm like, that's one of my.
Alex
Yeah, I mean, it's. It's the writings on the wall or anything.
Zach
Like, I. It. They had like, a romantic fireside meal like that.
Alex
A succulent fireside meal.
Zach
We'll go to Ken on this later and get his opinion.
Marianne
Because Authority. I think I ship it more if I hadn't read the Ace light novels and already shipped him with Iska the Marine. But dudes, I mean, I'm sure people ship that too. I tend to not be as much of a yaoi fan unless.
Zach
So, you know, I think Yamato and
Alex
Easter King, unless it's written very well.
Marianne
They do, they do. But I don't like if I'm looking at the light novels. If I'm like, oh, there's a potential male male pairing and a female male pairing. I'm like, oh, that's where my brain goes to first.
Zach
You see, I'm lame. So I'm just thinking, like, oh, what canonically makes sense and what can I actually fit in my head canonically?
Alex
USA and Kaya. That's all I. That's all I have room in my brain for. I think Full Body and Django, they're best friends.
Zach
Yeah, no, they're.
Marianne
I mean, Vivi and Koza would be another potential one.
Zach
I don't like the trope of the childhood friends getting married at the end. Like, let them just be the friends.
Marianne
Yeah, it's a little Romeo and Juliet too.
Zach
I know. It is Shakespearean.
Alex
Like Emo is Sanji and Zoro also. Anyway, Captain Slaystill.
Zach
That's a new one.
Alex
Yeah, Captain Slaystill says hello, my fellow bros and perfect little angels. What a short flashback that was. I loved the straw hats rallying behind Brook's decision. And another thing I loved was Brooklyn Brooks running sound near the end of the chapter. It's an all timer to me. Simple question this week. Do you have any particular sound effects from Otis Stephen, that tickle you? Thanks and have a great week off. Off I go. Zoba da bubba da.
Zach
You guys all know the answer to this.
Alex
Well, I of course love Stomp tromp, Stomp. Trump is one of my favorite cosmos.
Stephen Paul
Okay, I'm glad you like that one.
Alex
I love Stomptrop and I love Gurgaon.
Stephen Paul
I got good news for you, Alex. They show up all the time in every single chapter.
Zach
You said the most common, too. Can someone please put an onomatopoeia dictionary or something for the English and the Japanese for all these?
Alex
I do or like frequent occurrences. What is the Japanese of stomp chomp. Who's on the Japanese side?
Zach
Stompu trompu.
Stephen Paul
What is it?
Zach
No, you could cut that. Delaney.
Ed
I don't know.
Alex
No, keep it.
Stephen Paul
Delaney. I hate crime.
Alex
He's a moron.
Stephen Paul
What is it? I don't remember what it is off the top of my head. It's.
Alex
Either way, it's fantastic. I love it. Zach, did you have one that you like a lot?
Zach
Well, I mean, goop Glorp, I think was the actual one. I forgot there was blooplorp.
Alex
I forget.
Zach
I think there was both, like all of. Look, I think treble with a fiery passion, but his sound effects were top tier sound effects. I agree that doesn't make the man, but it. It makes the manga. That's what man Myer. Man Spreader would say.
Alex
Yeah. Good. Good one there. Zach Maran, do you have a. I'll
Marianne
be honest, I don't know that I've. I enjoy them when I read them, but I don't.
Zach
Remembering them is tough. Yeah.
Marianne
Yeah. I don't, like, think about it later, like, oh, man, that sound effect noise was pretty great.
Zach
Sorry, Mary, you can't come on the show anymore if that's how you feel.
Marianne
No, when I read it, I'm like, what? Lol. But then I go, oh, the plot, the story, and I forget exactly what they are, so I don't really have one. Sorry.
Alex
That's fine. Steven, you were the closest one to this, I think.
Marianne
Deal.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, I think. Okay. I think Donchan might have been the. The stomp Trump thing, which is. Which is kind of like a literal thing because it. Like a Donchan Sawagi is like people carrying on and, you know, carousing and, you know, partying and stuff. So I. I think if I'm remembering correctly, that's. That's what he. He uses. Yeah. I don't know. This one is a really good one. I was. I was very proud of that one. So I'm glad that it. It tickled people as well.
Zach
It was an extremely good one. Yeah,
Alex
well, zip itabada to me. Sounds like if you try to make an onomatopoeia out of the Scooby Doo running sound.
Ed
Yeah, yeah.
Alex
Library.
Stephen Paul
Right, right. I was definitely thinking along the lines of a classic cartoon library.
Zach
I'm.
Alex
Yeah.
Zach
I gotta say, like, Oda doesn't. I've.
Marianne
He gets.
Zach
He gets good press for this. You know, it's. It's. His onomatopoeia is usually on point to the point where sometimes it's a discussion point. Like, was the metallic one that we mentioned? That was weird. Was that emu. Yeah, it was. With his, you know, don't look.
Alex
Oh, yeah.
Zach
What do you call it? What did we call that thing? The. The circle? The Donut.
Alex
Hertz.
Zach
Donut. Hertz Donut.
Alex
Yeah, the Hurts Donut.
Stephen Paul
Oh, right, right. The. Like the. The reloading sound effects.
Alex
Yeah, yeah, that was. That was very interesting.
Stephen Paul
Everybody loved gg. The. The cigarette sound that people thought was calling him. Calling Sanji Gigi as a nickname. That was. That was a scanlation thing.
Zach
The scanlations.
Alex
I totally forgot about that.
Zach
The consistently bad about translations is they never. I don't think they ever translate translated sound effects, but I might be wrong about that. But I feel like.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, I mean, they usually don't yeah. Yeah.
Zach
When I jumped onto. Like, when I. When I jumped onto Shonen Jumps, like the official releases back in 2000, whenever the 12. Something that started, it was like, no. Oh, whoa. These have translations. They're not just. They're not just Japanese in the background for no reason.
Alex
I mean, sometimes they have them in the back, like in an index, like in volumes.
Zach
Yeah.
Alex
20th century boys.
Zach
20th century boys. Yeah.
Alex
Yeah, and I think Monster does, too. Either way, if I. If we're moving on.
Stephen Paul
Yeah.
Alex
This is Revoan. Avon Patch says if I had a nickel for every time a sword went through someone's head in this arc, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. So I guess now we know why Brook Scar went all the way through to his skull. Do you think Shrinko spared his life on purpose? Or did Brooke develop lobotomizing fencing techniques decades before Sanji invented plastic surgery? Kicks. Additional question for Steven. Why did you go for bipolar irises rather than the standard term of heterochromia or the mimetic term of eyes with homophobia?
Stephen Paul
I thought it was heterophobia.
Zach
It is heterophobia.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, she's.
Marianne
Like I said, the original joke is homophobia, but since it's heterochromia, I'm like, well, heterophobia makes more sense. Sense.
Zach
So, wait, so does that mean anyone without heterochromia is heterophobic in this. In this pretend world anyway?
Marianne
No, because if you have. If you. If you're. Oh, gosh.
Zach
Because I have. I have homochromia because I have the same color eyes is what I'm saying.
Alex
Most people do, so you're right.
Zach
Well, we're all homo. Chronic. Chronic homochronic. I don't know.
Marianne
Well. Well, the joke is heterophobic, so the implication there would be. Not great, but.
Zach
No, that's. If you're. No, what I'm saying is, if you have heterochromia, wouldn't you be home? You would be homophobic. And if you have homophobic.
Stephen Paul
If I'm allowed to answer this question for the listener.
Zach
Not happening. Not happening. Steven, go ahead.
Stephen Paul
Yeah. The reason that I went for bipolar irises is because Oda kind of, you know, know, wrote his own term. Like, there is a. There is a standard, like, medical term for heterochromia in Japanese, and it is, you know, it's like a long kanji term. There's like, five kanji in it. And in this case, Oda used this more poetic you know, bipolar. Bipolar. Obviously not, not related directly to like bipolar disorder, but multiple personality disorders from
Zach
kind of I guess potential.
Stephen Paul
It. No, no, no. It's from the same. You know, it's. It's the same route which is like, you know, so kyoku which would be like both or dual and then the other one would be pole or extreme. And so you know, it's just kind of this, this poetic way that, that Oda now that could be like, that could be like the bloodline elements thing where it's like, oh, this is the one piece world version of this other, you know, more well known own term. Or it could just be like, oh, he just wanted to use this, you know, this like fanciful invented word for it, you know, because it's relating to something, you know, to do with emu or something like that. So it has to sound special. But I do. I kind of like the, the use of the word bipolar just because like the more that I think about it, the more that I realize that that really is like, like kind of like a. The central theme that runs through this entire arc. Like there are so many things that can apply to that like the, you know, the, the Domi reversi, like the way that you. That he just flips people from, from good to evil. You know, personality wise. The fact that like Elbaf itself. It seems we wouldn't even talk about this with like the, the Giants 800 years ago also like, yeah, we didn't
Alex
even touch that right.
Stephen Paul
The, that cy nature. But like the fact that like the concept of that like the Giants at this point in history are kind of at a crossroads of like, okay, do we, do we continue to be warriors or do we change completely and we become like enlightened and peaceful and advanced? You know, do we. Do we forsake our old ways and go to this new new way? So it seems like that really is like this sort of flip flopping like between two extremes does repeat itself a lot. There's that. That's a repeated motif in this arc. So it was, it was kind of interesting to see that that pop up in this term and like to, to consider how that that might relate to stuff. But yeah, so the, the root answer is it is because it came from Oda.
Zach
Sorry to have cut you off on my. The question I asked earlier that I wanted the answer to too.
Alex
Well, thank you for that, Steven.
Zach
Zach.
Alex
I'm gonna just go on right to the next one. Straw Hat Part 9. Who says? I knew it. I knew it. Bedridden for several months due to fatigue. Damn it, Oda. I knew that whole bit was fishy. As I know some of you speculate that Kendall was bad. But all we've seen was her being a good person and mother. So I'm interpreting this as Kendall was attacked by this man mayor and riven racer as her own because he loved her in Candle Dell. I mean it's a. It's a way to look at it. Not going to. Not going to dispute that either way. Por Sher is such a victim in this whole thing. Poor Brooke too. I really want Brooke to save her. I love how the rest of the straw hats were like in on it. And immediately. Let's break that ice.
Ed
And.
Alex
And to truly make me smile. Luffy is here. And finally punched Emu in his stupid face. Let's go. Next chapter is going to be great.
Zach
I forgot to mention. Sorry. Go ahead.
Marianne
Sorry. I was gonna say I feel like this person had the intended response to this chapter. I'll say.
Stephen Paul
Sure. Yes. I think so.
Alex
Yeah. No, I agree. I think that we're. I think we're too. I don't know.
Zach
We're thinking too much.
Alex
We always do.
Zach
I forgot to preface my whole thing that I have been wrong about these things many times. Look, am I gonna mention the Kozuki Oden thing with the Conjuro being tricked about that? No, I'm not going to mention that. Am I going to mention the fact that we all thought Toki was still alive? No, I'm not going to mention that either. Oh, that's ridiculous.
Stephen Paul
Speak for yourself.
Alex
I. I think that. I think that I like the Kandel was evil thing because to me, it. I mean, I don't want another situation where. Where Oda has to put this in this comic.
Zach
Agreed. Strongly agreed.
Alex
Also because he's done it before and yeah, like, yeah, we got it. We fucking get it. You don't need to do it again. And I feel like that's. This is also my way of just sort of thinking like how, like what other. What other character archetype could he put into this comic? Would the allure of being a celestial dragon appeal to somebody like Kandel? Just like how it appealed to York. 1/7 of Vegapunk. Right. So I think that to me that's also. It's a much more interesting way to take the story.
Zach
Yeah. Sometimes the more interesting way is not the way that he ends up going, unfortunately. I mean, that is the problem with theory crafting is that you're either correct. Which is kind of disappointing sometimes because it's like, oh, I guessed it, or you're incorrect and it does not meet your expectations and you're disappointed that it doesn't might or it surpasses your expectations, which is possible as well.
Stephen Paul
This might be a controversial statement, but sometimes the more interesting route is not the right route, you know, for the, for the story. Sometimes, like, you could be like, oh, this is really interesting. But like, it might mess with like, characterization. It might not, you know, align with like the themes that are going on and stuff. So it's. It's not always as easy as the.
Zach
That the week to week thing. Like, I think about like, okay, remember the chapter where we thought everything was over and it wasn't, you know, obviously, but at the time we're like, like thriller Bark.
Alex
I think, like, that's a good thriller
Zach
Bark is another great example. Like he. When you read week to week, it could seem like a decision is ill informed or uninteresting, but it's actually the more, you know, there's something else there that we're not seeing.
Stephen Paul
Zach, were you referring to like the chapter where it was like. The very next one was the one where Emu, like descends and. Yeah. And then we see him.
Zach
Yeah, yeah, it was literally we were talking about Emu's vacation. That one where the.
Stephen Paul
Right.
Zach
Where Kirby drew him going through security, which is one of my favorites. But yeah, that it's the week to week thing too, you know, Like, I think that definitely warps your thinking, you know, when reading this, you spoil you.
Alex
Like, we didn't even talk about the possible third scenario in which Oda never revisits this again. Just left. Left to our own devices as to what happened.
Zach
Well, that seems to be Steven's favorite because Steven, you were. And you're not. I don't disagree. I mean, like, it wouldn't be my preference, but it is interesting to have it just like. Like not be something that's addressed.
Alex
Somebody's gonna ask about it in SBS and then he's gonna be like, oh, yeah, yeah, she really wanted to be a celestial dragon and blah, blah. And he'll just like hand wave it away. Like there's. That's always the option too.
Marianne
Well, and ultimately she's not the important character in this flashback.
Alex
Correct, Correct.
Zach
That's what we have to think about.
Alex
That's the thing. Everybody's thinking about Kendall and yeah, I get it. Kendall's a cool character. But it's about Brooke and Shuri.
Marianne
Yeah.
Alex
Ultimately. And that's their emotional through line. And it's gonna Pass. And that's gonna pass.
Zach
The thing there though is that Candel is so specifically mentioned in that ODA box at the beginning of the flashback. That's what. Like why would you do that if this is.
Marianne
Well, and usually when we get a straw hat flashback, it's a little more in depth than four chapter characters, but.
Zach
Yes.
Alex
Well, unless it's USOP or Zorro.
Zach
Well, recent. Recent history. How long was this Sanji one? The second one. I don't think that was super long.
Alex
I think it was a couple chapters long. Right.
Zach
Well, was it like four is the. I don't think it was more than four.
Ed
Maybe.
Alex
I don't know. It's been so long since I read a couple of books.
Marianne
I feel like the characters motivations were clearer in those ones. Maybe.
Alex
Yeah.
Marianne
Well, and this, this one has political intrigue and all of that fun stuff which open up another can of worms, you know.
Alex
Sure. And it has, I mean it has a lot to say too about the world government and the kingdom system and you know. Yeah. The geopolitical. Yeah. Like you say. I, I, I, I, I don't think that I, I personally don't think that. I do think that will see it again because there's pieces missing that are
Zach
probably have volume 84. The one with the COVID that is not.
Alex
Well, I'm going to move on to the next question while you're flipping through that. Please do Seal our Karna says. Hey Opp, can we talk about the COVID page? Like right out of the gate with the feels? Yeah, I mean we talked about it.
Ed
It's great.
Stephen Paul
Fantastic.
Alex
Feels R Us. I mean we love it. Here's Cram Crammy Gata. A land to the west. Ahoy Op Banger chapter as always. What a brutal chapter. So I suspect Shur's true self took over and made sure to non fatally stab Brook in the skull. What a sentence. What an amazing chapter for Brook, both past and present. I really love the touch that his big cry here mirrors his one in Thriller Bark. And I'm so glad he's willing to give Shuri a second chance and wants to save her and that the crew follow his life lead also. Yeah. Big Luffy punch on Emu. My question this week is what do you think gunko/sh's final fate is going to be here? Have a great week. We briefly talked about this, but I feel like we should just quickly round robin. Old.
Stephen Paul
Both old.
Marianne
She's got her old.
Alex
I think that's what the beach that makes you old.
Stephen Paul
I think I Think it's going to undo the. The. The, you know, the age. And so, like, she's gonna start getting older and Brooke's gonna be like, no, no, no, she's gonna die. She's disappearing. And then she just turns like 70 or whatever and stops. And he's like, no, no.
Marianne
Now, do we think she's gonna be. Do we think she's gonna be a. Like, what kind of old do we think? Should we gonna get shriveled old or hot old? Probably. Hot old.
Alex
Hot old probably. I don't know if she'll be like, look, Brooke, now I'm closer to your age now and we can finally get married or whatever.
Marianne
Please, no.
Zach
And then rejecting her would make that better.
Stephen Paul
She gets really old and he's like, oh, now I can change your diapers again.
Alex
You think?
Marianne
Maybe. You think, oh, my God. Well, that depends.
Zach
Oh, wow. She went there. So the answer to your original question about Sanji's flashback is just her. It's just around two chapters, so this was double that length.
Alex
Okay.
Zach
It's like two. A little over two.
Alex
I think that's fine.
Zach
40 to 40. Oh, I'm sorry. Under two. Yeah. No, yeah. It's not long at all.
Kirsten Carey
Huh.
Alex
Okay, interesting.
Zach
It's as much of the volume. It's not very much, actually.
Marianne
You know why? No, I thought it was longer. Because it was definitely longer in the anime.
Zach
Oh, 100%.
Alex
Well, I also do feel like that that flashback felt a lot denser than this. And this one has way less pages because I think the first chapter was like, what, 12 pages of this flashback. It was pretty short.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, we had some shorties, so that's true.
Alex
I do think that maybe comparably page wise is weird.
Zach
The Sanji one is short, underlined. I can tell you how many pages
Alex
when he's wearing the mask and feeding the mice and going to Sora and giving her the banana.
Stephen Paul
There's a lot of stuff that happens, but it's all very quick.
Zach
Yeah, but we also have montages.
Marianne
Sorry, I feel like we already know. Like, there's not much personality to like, sanji's brothers are three guys who suck.
Zach
It's 18 pages total.
Alex
No, that's a good point.
Marianne
It feels like there's less nuance to the characters themselves. Like, his mom is great, his sister is iffy, and it's more straightforward. Yeah, she's got dead mom disease.
Zach
She's got dead mom. Oh, I hate that disease. But seriously, I don't like that disease. What's next, Alex?
Alex
I mean, what's last ice fisher 10 with the Cayman under the wire here with this one. Hi Opp. I'm back in the states today. The man mayor's special heterochromia is really intriguing to me. Does it go beyond hockey's future site? One eye represents the past, the other the future. Possibly awakening them may allow the person to see through other people's eyes from any point in space and time. Near Omni site. Now that is what I call a theory. It is kind of interesting they brought that up because of what. When Brooke was training Shuri, he was like, oh, it's almost like you can see into the future.
Zach
Yeah, I did clock that and I forgot about it.
Alex
And I thought it was more observation hockey related than anything else. But the eye thing is very interesting and I'm sure we'll get more on that that the closer we get to the end of this arc.
Stephen Paul
Yeah.
Alex
All right, that does it for disp.
Zach
We have a couple. Do you want to. Do we have any subreddit archipelago?
Stephen Paul
Steven.
Zach
I'll do blue Skype here. We only have a couple. First one comes from Aiden, who says random thought. This is a good question. Is Ethan Baron V Nestro the only character in one piece with the middle initial that is not dark and does this significant have any significance or is it nothing more than a goofy way to get Venus into his name? Does sword Gandhi have the will of V?
Alex
That's interesting.
Stephen Paul
I mean, if you're going to contrast it with. With the D. The V. Was it
Zach
a V in like Roman the.
Stephen Paul
Yes, I think it would.
Zach
The actual Alphabet. The non. The English Alphabet event.
Alex
Yeah, just like how it's D. Drake.
Zach
It's.
Alex
It's Ethan Baron 5.
Zach
5.
Alex
Yeah. If. If we're going to go by the metric and theory that D stands for the half moon, then maybe V stands for devil horns, you know, or the setting sun.
Zach
No, that's. Doesn't make sense.
Stephen Paul
No, it does not make sense.
Alex
Does not make sense.
Zach
Very tired. Okay, next one.
Alex
It stands for Enugami family. The two. The what? The two legs sticking out of the water.
Zach
Word stands for the number 5. The next one, very non coincidentally comes from VV Matt, who says hi everyone on opp and this is the will of V happening right here. Been following you guys for about a year now. First time posting a question. Slash theory too, actually. Okay, this one time. Next time you have to wait two years to ask two theories. Though. After all the fighting is done, would Loki be out of commission and Usopp commands Ragnier to free Shuri fulfilling the prophecy of him wielding the 10,000 ton hammer. I think, Alex, we know your answer to this.
Alex
I really want him to fucking use the big hammer.
Marianne
And then we would get another music sting. It would be the Beatles again with Bang Bang usa. Silver hammer came down upon her head. Except that maybe we don't want to make sure she's dead.
Zach
I want you to do the rest of that. Except I don't think one. I don't think toy or us could afford the rights.
Marianne
No, probably not.
Zach
100% agree. And plus we have what's his name, the owl who's in my backyard right now Biblo to help shrink the hammer down. So that'll be good it. I will still there. I don't know if it is Vivi. Matt says since Shuri's father is revealed to be a celestial dragon like Bonnie Shanks and Shamrock could say the same be said for Nami. We know nothing about her biological parents, only that the Oikot Kingdom was destroyed. I think that's a live action ad, if I recall. Who is her father? Wrong answers only. Okay, here we go.
Marianne
Arlong is her dad. If you're going for wrong answers, there's the obvious wrong answer.
Kirsten Carey
Wrong.
Zach
I don't know if you get the meme, but it's right. Fishbone in. Indeed.
Alex
Dr. Fishbone in.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, somebody was fishboning.
Marianne
I feel like that could be a plot or not.
Zach
I don't want to ever find out who Nami's parents are as a significant plot point. That's me. We have so many of these. I don't care anymore. Let Nami just use her lightning thing and ask can I shoot lightning at that? That's enough for me. But really do other things besides just the lightning. That's it. Alex, what about you? Would you like to see Nami's parents?
Alex
I don't care anymore.
Zach
About the podcast.
Alex
No, no.
Stephen Paul
About.
Alex
About Nami's parents. I feel like. I feel like there is a certain curiosity to me because, you know, she was found as an orphan. Her and Nojiko and I kind of. It would be interesting to find out where they came from, but I don't. I wouldn't want her to be anybody significant, like a princess or something.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, well, yeah. Oda just like completely disabused me of any notions of like, oh, that would be so exciting when he revealed that Queen is Frankie's dad. So, yeah, like, yeah, be careful what you wish for.
Ed
Or that.
Zach
Or that. What's his face? The hara fuda is Page one.
Stephen Paul
Yeah.
Zach
And Ulti's dad. Yeah. By the way, that's the person that Ace killed, Right? Didn't kill him.
Alex
Yeah.
Zach
Or yeah, he might have killed Burns.
Alex
Yeah, he killed him. He killed him.
Zach
What a nice cooler
Alex
live action.
Zach
Not his cover story. That was just so adorable.
Marianne
But sometimes you gotta kill a man.
Alex
Yeah. Especially if it's the live action one piece.
Zach
Yeah.
Marianne
Yeah. Well, honestly though, it makes sense.
Zach
DK Toy Chest has our last one. Yeah, sorry, go ahead.
Stephen Paul
And Netflix is like, yeah, look, we don't want to pay these actors residuals. Like, let's get them out of here.
Zach
It all comes down to that with Netflix. Marianne, I know these aren't your words. These are my words.
Marianne
Nope, I super can't say that right now.
Zach
No, I know you can't. That's why I said they're my words and very specifically not yours. I'm not being sarcastic. I'd like to say that DK torches says last one man. The events in Brooks past left him with a splitting headache and a brain broken heart. But he doesn't even have a heart now. Yo ho ho. That's just not nice to say to someone after they've experienced that kind of hardship. Do we have anything on the Subreddit Archipelago, Steven?
Stephen Paul
No. No, we do not.
Zach
Okay, that'll do it for Piece Together. Any final thoughts, anyone?
Alex
No?
Zach
Netflix, you're great. We love you.
Marianne
Yeah. I will say I had forgotten about the like. Oh, yeah, they mentioned the 800 years ago and they mentioned Gunko's power. And in the whole scheme of everything else in the chapter, I was like, I totally forgot. Those are interesting little plot points. Are we gonna come back to them? Yeah, maybe. Should be.
Zach
We've talked about this a lot, but the fact that it could go either way is bothering me in this moment. Even if it at the end of the day is unimportant.
Marianne
I mean, the 800 years ago, probably. Yes. Cause that's Void Set tree, isn't it?
Zach
That's. No, that's after the void century.
Marianne
Okay.
Zach
900 through it's 800 to 900, right? Is that what it is?
Stephen Paul
I think 800 is like the magic number. That's like. That's the Void Century.
Zach
For some reason, I thought it was nine. Okay, that'll do it for the Piece Together segment. Zippity Bibbidi Bibbidoo. Let's go to the. Let's round this off. This has been the One piece podcast episode 924 for June 29, 2026. First of all I want to give a huge thanks to Ed and Kirsten for coming on the show.
Kirsten Carey
You can find me K I R C A R E Y G T R on Instagram and take off the GTR to find me on Blue Sky. If you're in Japan. I have a couple shows in Tokyo and Osaka this month, most notably on June 20th. 20th. But I'm forgetting the name of the venue. So find me online and I will tell you that I'm also opening myself back up for commissioning for composition. So if you would like music for your thing, hit me up.
Zach
You should. We highly recommend.
Kirsten Carey
Thanks for having me.
Zach
We highly recommend.
Kirsten Carey
If you like what you hear on this podcast, it may be yours. Not that specific.
Zach
Not the specific. Yeah, listen to it. When she interrupted Alex to tell her about what she's doing,
Alex
Christian did nothing wrong. You interrupted me. Which is.
Stephen Paul
It was very funny.
Alex
Which is also fine.
Stephen Paul
You call them the throwaways because her group is throw away. So that was a very parental thing for you to do.
Zach
That's what they say on the Internet.
Alex
It's like saying Best Buys.
Zach
The Best Buys or going to Blockbusters. Am I a parent? Is that like the moment when I became.
Marianne
Apparently so.
Ed
No.
Zach
That's worse than anything I just did. Marian, where can people find you?
Marianne
I am on Twitter, Instagram. I recently got a TikTok. I don't know what I'm going to do with it, but don't worry about that. All under the moniker Marianne D. Hobby it. Yeah. Also the 100 girlfriends who really really really really really love you is coming back and pretty sure we're dubbing it so that'll be next season. That'll be a. It's. It's she. The girl I play sounds kind of like flanpe, but she's much nicer. So if you want to talk about other things that I'm in that as I joked earlier, that actually matter. I'm kidding there. There's a that. So you know.
Zach
Thank you, Marianne, as always. We'll have you on for book and non book flashback chapters in the future. You're always welcome.
Marianne
Okay, great. Great.
Zach
Yeah. Don't worry, you're not exclusively here for that, Steven. Where could people find you?
Stephen Paul
I'm over on Bluesky, StephenPaul, BSky Social and let's see the Akane Banashi. I believe the. I think the dub is for the anime is coming out in. Is that in July when that starts
Zach
to go dub Is the dub is
Stephen Paul
going or is it already.
Marianne
They just did the Jugan Moo Jugan would go, yeah, cool.
Stephen Paul
Oh yeah.
Zach
I know they're doing the rounds and
Alex
cons dope as hell.
Kirsten Carey
I got.
Alex
I have to catch up on the animation.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, the. The first season is done. The first co is complete now and so you can watch the subtitled version on YouTube for free. And I believe they announced that the second cour. Like the other half of, you know, their. Their initial order is going to start in what, the winter. So like January, you know. Yeah, January. Yeah, something like that. So. So yeah, you can check that out now. It's a nice little chunk of the story. Pretty small of the, you know, the entirety of this story now. But they did a great job with it.
Alex
Alex, I'm on Blue sky at dude, clamation We Simpsons on Blue sky and patreon.com superart fight. Sign it up and see videos of super art. Fight fight past and future. Whatever. Just give us money.
Zach
You can find me@zack logan.com I am going to do the rare thing where I'll do this quick but I never really get time to watch anime and I've just been binging on a bunch of stuff. So I am currently watching or finished watching a Kana Banashi Damon's of the Shadow Realm Witch Hat Atelier. These are all great shows. Amazing Witch. I. I've been reading Witch Hat Atelier for many years and not to be the hipster, but you know, I am being the hipster. You should absolutely read it if you haven't. I also just watch Apocalypse Hotel which I cannot recommend enough. It's. These are like that and Witch Hat Atelier are like really great. Oh, you've never watched anime before. Try these. And also Milky Subway I watch, which is also free on YouTube and also excellent for those who have not seen it. It's like 45 minutes total. But friends of the show Jeff, Sungwon and Miles all were talking about a lot so I peer pressured. Yeah.
Stephen Paul
Excited for Jadugar too. That's coming.
Zach
Oh my God, I'm so excited for that. That manga is excellent. I love the idea of. Of cutesy like looks and like really dark story is like a very fun juxtaposition. Like not like super dark but like it is a historical fiction.
Stephen Paul
Yeah, it's historical.
Zach
It's pretty dark. Yeah. I mean, because it's a mystery.
Stephen Paul
Yeah. Yeah. That stuff.
Zach
Stuff happens. Yeah. But it also looks like something out of like the 50s. I love it.
Stephen Paul
It.
Zach
The manga you should pick up too, if you haven't. I want to. The next volume comes out in July. I forget. It's like a. I think it's. Is it Yen Press or an indie publisher or maybe something else. Yeah, but that's under Witches of Mongol, I think is the manga.
Stephen Paul
Yeah. Or a Witch in Mongolia, something like that.
Zach
Yeah, Mongolia. Maybe that's. Anyway, I don't usually plug other shows, but check those all out because those are all excellent. You could find me, I mentioned Zach Logan.com on Blue Sky. You could also find the podcast@one piece podcast.com patreon.com One Piece Podcast, YouTube.com One Piece Podcast, Spotify, Apple podcasts, anywhere you get your podcast, subscribe, rate and review. We're back next week. We're going to talk about chapter 1187. And, you know, until then, my name is Zach.
Alex
And my name is Alex.
Zach
Ice, everyone. Goodbye.
Marianne
Bye.

“I’ll use my radical beam and melt it in one go!” — Franky, [66:39]
Brook dashes forward, “zuba dubba dubba,” bringing comic relief amid the tragedy.
[67:56 – 72:46]
“You get out of Elbaf right now!” — Luffy, [72:15]
[05:01 – 38:10]
Notable Bits:
The flashback creates deep empathy for Brook, showing how his belief in Shuri’s goodness persists even after violence and betrayal.
The reveal of the rare “bipolar irises” bloodline trait, sought for generations by Imu and the Celestial Dragons, sets up thematic links across the arc: manipulation, legacy, and the cyclical nature of oppression.
Theorizing abounds on whether Shuri will survive being freed from the ice, if aging will catch up, or if there might be a tragic end reminiscent of Saturn’s “St. Saturning.”
Mixed reactions to the fight’s setup—while the cathartic punch is classic, some panelists lament that this felt “color by numbers,” lacking novelty given the emotional weight built around Brook and Shuri.
Discussion on fragmentary storytelling, Oda's preference for thematic ambiguity (especially around trauma and generational wounds), and the manga’s weekly vs. completed reading experience.
“There’s a value in not being too pedantic. Sometimes, not every answer needs to be spelled out.” — Stephen Paul, [91:59]
“If Luffy says: ‘I can’t see anyone beating me,’ it feels like he’s about to get beaten—100%.” — Kirsten Carey, [85:27]
“If you have Daft Punk stuck in your head after this: good.” — Zach, [03:51]
