And it's always great to have the actual person there who actually investigated. So we're so lucky and fortunate to have him on the show. on that door and it's knocking hard. In Saskatchewan, we have been getting up to 29, 30 degrees. I just read someplace in Manitoba hit 37 degrees today.

Oh, wow.

But we. We are under a tornado warning in certain parts of Saskatchewan right as I speak.

That's not fun.

So for those who don't have Celsius. So 29 Celsius, that's somewhere around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Somewhere in there.

Yeah.

And you know, summer, it's my favorite time of year. Absolutely. I love summer. Winter is, you know. Okay. It doesn't really do it for me, but yes, the trees and the flowers and everything is. Has that magical look about it. And I have some other great news besides that. Summer is just around the corner. Now, unfortunately, in some parts of the world, they're going into their winter, like New Zealand and Australia. But you can have it because we had a lot of. We've had a lot of winter. Thank you very much. But I have some good news. Drum roll, please. There will be a season four of UFO Talker so we can announce that. And also, it's hard to believe what I'm about to say. Where does the time go? Is not counting today. There's only two shows left in season three. So the last show will be on May 28th and because our show is quirky, there's just a lot of quirkiness in the UFO talker. We do have two more shows. There'll be one in the third Wednesday of July and a new one also in the third Wednesday of August. And I kind of think of those as kind of casual Fridays kind of shows. But we, we like to have some new shows there. Just so you remember, we're still with you guys. Like, we're still, we're still out here even though the show is mainly on summer hiatus. And I love using that word, summer hiatus. So, Christine, just to, you know, we've been talking about we're going to have season four and how many episodes we have left. I just wanted to mention something because we get emails from listeners to across the world. We have about 20 countries that were that list where we have listeners. And there is a theme to a lot of the emails. And it didn't dawn on me till I started realizing, wow, a lot of people mentioned this. So a lot of people say a lot of nice things. But one thing they all mention is the show has kind of a positive vibe. There's a kindness. It's a place where we don't drop the F bomb or not super negative against people or situations. And I don't do this consciously. We don't do it consciously. But the more I think about it, I think, oh, I, I guess we are that kind of a show. Like, you know, so feel free to think of us as your little 45 minute to an hour vacation from insanity and this is your safe zone for the next little while.

Yeah. And I, that is so flattering when you say that about the show. I am always flattered when people say that about my bookstore, that they consider it a safe space.

That's right. That's right. So we're, we're very appreciative and we're glad that we, that we can fulfill that, that, that niche in the UFO world. And of course, whenever I tell people that we talk about bakeries on the UFO podcast, they always look at me very oddly. They always say, tell me that again. How does a bakery fit into a UFO podcast? And you're right, it doesn't fit. And I have no idea how it works. But we also get tons of emails on that, that everyone likes that segment because in the beginning I thought, okay, this is a bit odd, we might just drop this after two or three times. But then we started to get more and more emails where everyone loves that segment. So unless all of a sudden we get a lot of people saying they don't like that segment. We will continue on in season four and we are happy to do it because there's nothing like a good donut.

Oh, no.

Food. Yes, as Homer Simpson would say, donuts. So we have two UFO events that we want to mention and one of them is the Lake Superior Paranormal Convention which takes place October 16th through 19th in Thunder Bay, Ontario. And speakers include Trevor Thomas, Kelly Ireland, Brian Baker and Elliot Van Dusen who we interviewed on the podcast not long ago. He is an absolute great speaker and would be amazing to hear in person. And there are several others appearing as well. It would be. Now I don't think you're the. I don't think it's a one on one. I think it's, you know, you and 20 or 30 other people having dinner

And since we last talked about the phenomenon, we. Several of these dinners have sold out.

Oh, I bet.

Yeah. So some of them were like the David Pilates that sold out. The Nick Pope, Whitley Strieber. Now there are some that are still available if you would like. But I guess that's a good idea because if you had one of those guys was one of your favorites, it would be interesting to kind of at least probably be able to ask my few questions one on one which you normally wouldn't be able to do. That is. Both of those are great. And I just love saying phenomecon.

So now we're going to have a couple of UFO news stories. One of them is from the National UFO Reporting center. And this is a sighting that happened on April 4, and it happened in Porterville, California. Now, this is interesting because it's a. The shape of the ufo. It has been seen before, but it's a very unusual shape. So this shape is an octahedron, and that is hard to say. I had to practice that. So it's kind of like a pyramid, as if the pyramid had a mirror image of itself on the bottom. So at about 9pm near the Granite High School there in Porterville, California, two people were in a car. They saw this object. They say it was about 600 to 800ft away, and it was about the size of a UPS truck or a large van. And the object, it was at night, but there was a very bright full moon. And the object had engraving on one of the sides that was. They could see it because the moon was shining off that side of it. So it was some kind of engraving or marking on the side, but they couldn't write it down again to what it was exactly. They just knew it was some kind of marking. And it looked like it was a dark metallic color. It was about 60 to 70ft in the air. There was no sound. And I think this lasted about 20 seconds or so, the sighting. Now, it's interesting because this is an unusual shape, but it has been seen before in several places around the world. One of them that is a similar shape that I thought of immediately. It's not. I don't think it's exactly the same shape, but very similar. Is the. The cash lundrum UFO events.

Yeah.

And that took place in December 29, 1980. In it was Betty Cash, Vicki Lundrum, and Vicki's grandson Colby.

B

And that's the one with the physical evidence, isn't it? Yes, yes, a lot of physical evidence.

A

Yes. And I. There's several good documentaries on it.

And

A

the two women involved, they apparently got radiation poisoning from the ufo, and there was a great deal of US Military helicopters were flying around this thing. And if you watch the documentaries, the ladies definitely seem sincere and they tried to sue the government for their injuries. Now, recently there's been several investigators who have tried to debunk it. Yeah, it's a very unusual case. I don't know what to think about it. The one thing that most of the shows that I have watched, the women seem very, very sincere, which, I mean, you know, that doesn't count for everything. But it's be hard to believe they were faking this kind of stuff. But that looked. That shape was similar to the one that was seen in Porterville. So it is interesting. Right. And the two people that witnessed it in Porterville, it said the object, the octahedron, it made a 90 degree turn without what you would expect in a helicopter or an airplane. It just was going along. It pivoted on itself and went immediately 90 degrees differently. So there was no slowing down, no stopping. It was just going and then boom. In a different direction. So that would rule out anything with human beings in it because that would be, you know, you couldn't survive the G forces.

Of that happening. So, Christine, you have some very interesting news and it's about an upcoming motion picture.

B

Yes. And it's funny because we've been talking about several big budget UFO films coming out under a lot of secrecy. Like the Spielberg film coming out, which we know absolutely nothing about, except that it stars Coleman domingo. So keep Mr. Domingo in mind because of what I'm about to tell you. A new version, a new film version of the Betty and Barney Hill abduction case has been announced. And they have not only announced a new version of it, it has an Oscar winning director and two Oscar nominees attached to it.

Wow.

B

It's really something. It's going to be called Strange Arrivals and it's directed by Roger Ross Williams who is an Oscar winner for a short feature. And Betty is going to be played by Demi Moore and Barney will be played by Colma Domingo.

A

Wow.

B

Who I think is the new king of UFO movies.

A

I know. Yes.

B

And this is really something for. Because that we were talking about how good the TV movie was. Incident.

A

Yeah. So the UFO incident. I think we've, we've talked about this before, maybe last season. But that came out in 70. 1975 was a made for TV film.

B

Yeah.

A

And that starred James Earl Jones as Barney and Estelle Parsons as Betty.

B

Yeah.

A

And I always remember Estelle Parsons because she was in Bonnie and Clyde.

B

Yes.

A

And I saw that as a kid and her performance really stood out in my mind. But that was a very good film, as I'm gonna say, one of the better made for TV movies. And definitely at the time, a lot

of people who aren't Even interested in UFOs consider that one is the best ever made for TV movies.

A

So the only thing I think they can do differently is so the special effects weren't that great in the UFO incident. And there's probably a lot of things they couldn't do thematically in 1975 because it involves an interracial marriage. And this was 75. So that was still a Pretty touchy. Believe it or not, that was a very touchy subject back in 1975. Of course, now it's a different world. So they'll be able to explore a lot more in the. The new film Strange Arrival. So I am definitely interested in seeing what that will be like.

B

Well, it's funny when you mentioned this is what we were talking about, maybe them being able to emphasize the relationship more. I mean, the first tagline I read for this, Demi Moore and Colman Domingo are about to star in an epic romance movie with an alien twist.

A

Yeah. So you don't think of it as a romance story, but of course you. We don't really know that part of their lives. We only mainly only know the abduction part of their lives.

B

But when you think about it, it was Barney's second marriage and he had children from his previous marriage. They were a very committed couple and they, they stuck through. I mean, not only the social upheaval of the 60s, a UFO abduction.

A

Yes.

B

Which would make or break a lot of couples. You know, if you weren't together agreeing on it, you would, you would break up.

A

And it was definitely the first real abduction case that was brought to the level that it was like a book. And a lot of people heard about this kind of thing for the very first time. Betty and Barney Hill. So that makes it very unique and very famous.

B

Yeah, well, it's. It's funny because when we were doing side research for this on the online African American registry, Barney's birthday, they list.

Wow.

B

They said Today in history, July 20th, 1922, Barney Hill, UFO Witness born.

A

Wow.

B

Which is pretty cool.

A

Yes. Yeah. So we will definitely be interested in, in seeing that film. I think we might even review it for the podcast.

I think we will really have to.

A

Yes.

B

It's just. And we had talked about there was a chance this might have been. It was announced possibly being made through the Obama's production company a few years ago, but never happened.

A

Yeah. And they're Brock and Michelle Obama. Their company's called Higher Ground Productions. But now when you read the press releases, it only talks about seesaw films and it never mentions anything about Barack Obama. And they also. Well, one thing that caught my attention is Seesaw Films. They produce a lot of shows, but they produce Slow Horses.

B

Oh, right.

A

Which is one of my favorite shows with Gary Oldman who does that character to perfection.

B

Well, I think what might have happened with the Obama's deal is Netflix is really quick on the trigger. They don't seem to keep shows around more than a season or two and development deals are really short. They might have had a really short window for opportunity to produce it.

A

I don't know, you know, but definitely I'm marking it down in my calendar now. I can hardly wait to.

B

Oh, I'm really excited. I was excited when the Obamas might be making it. And the cast. The cast for this one. Wow.

A

Yes. So now Christine, it's that part of the show where we give a shout out to a small town or village where we have listeners. And this week we have picked Creswick, Victoria, Australia and it has a population of 3,170 people. It's Creswick is in the west central part of Victoria which is a state in Australia. And I think if I got this right, Creswick is I think 120km from Melbourne. And something I was mentioning to Christine just before the show started the in the last several weeks because I see stats where all of the listeners are listening from. And in the last several weeks the number one city in the world for listening to UFO Talker is Melbourne, Australia.

Yeah, isn't that something?

A

The number two city is Sydney, Australia. And this has just kind of happened in the last few weeks. We've gained a lot of listeners from that area. So welcome aboard to everyone there that is listening. We're very grateful that you've decided to, to listen to the show. So Creswick and of course I have watched videos of Creswick and it is very typical of a small Australian town. But something I, when I meant I mentioned it before. I've been to Australia, my father was from Australia so I've been there several times. Something I've noticed is not every small place, but a lot of small places. They usually have one or two really great looking old buildings. So it's usually the post office and the government building, but just unbelievably great architecture like. And it happens in so many of them. They're all picture worthy for sure. So Creswick is very similar to that. It has a couple of those buildings where you just think wow, that is amazing. And also they have, just outside of town they have a small lake. It's called the Creswick Blue Waters. And the water is remarkably blue. It's almost kind of like a turquoise kind of a color. And they've got a lot of walking trails. There's a walking trail to this place called Blue Waters but a lot of walking trails in and around Creswick which makes it a very looks like a spectacular place to live and or visit well, it was.

B

I did not realize this and I've seen this miniseries, if you're Stephen King fans. It was used as a filming location for the 2004 Salem's Lot TV miniseries.

A

Yeah. And that was with Rob. Rob Lowe and Donald Sutherland.

B

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I mean, when we were talking about how picturesque it was and had beautiful small town features and I'm looking at the gorgeous town hall. Well, that. Sure, that would be an ideal filming location.

A

Oh, yes. And I'm sure when Rob Lowe was there in Donald Sutherland, they went to this bakery that we're going to shout out now, being from Canada, you would think that I would know French, but. Aha, you would be wrong. Oh, yes, I. I like to tell people I barely know English. So we have. The name of this bakery is in French, so I'm going to do my best. It's called La Peche Gourmand and I think I didn't butcher that too badly.

No, you did a good job.

A

But the, the gist of this bakery is I'm going to say it's a French person that does the baking because all the baked goods all are in French. And knowing what I know about Australians, I think in that bakery there's a lot of pointing to what they would like. So there's three things that are just, oh, they do look out of this world. One of them, the name translates into the Royal Chocolate Cake. And this is one of those times where it's unfortunate that we don't have video because it looks stunningly great. And they also have lemon tarts, but these are lemon tarts, which are at some other level of lemon tart that I've ever seen before.

Yeah.

A

And also they have something. And I'm going to. Can I get Christine to say it? Because I'm sure I would butcher it.

B

Yeah. It's called a milfoy. It's very finely layered pieces of puff pastry. The English translation, you don't. I mean, even here we call it a milfoy. It's translated as a thousand leaves. It's a dessert composed of three layers of puff pastry and vanilla cream with. They call it a mousseline, which is. Would be like a whipped cream. Pastry cream. That's the word I'm kind of looking for. And. And it was funny because I said, oh, well, we have a French bakery here in Regina that makes those. And I started forwarding you lots of pictures. Yes, milfoise are wonderful if you have never had them. And.

And then when you've gone, when you had your fill at that bakery.

B

Yeah.

A

You can go over to a place to have coffee and this is a very Australian name. You can get your coffee at Meg's Place, which is at 56 Albert street in Creswick. And you can get yourself a good old Aussie cup of joe. And it looks like a real Aussie kind of cafe. And the all the coffee looks very, very good and the reviews are very, very good. So there you have it. That is our shout out to Creswick, which is in the state of Victoria in Australia. And that looks, the whole place looks absolutely amazing.

So, Christine, I have a question that I don't normally bring up this question for our listeners, but we are planting some flowers outside of our house and I have searched the Internet and I have asked some gardeners at the garden center where I got this flower. No one's given me a very great answer to this. So I thought I'm going to throw it out there to the listeners. And there's going to be places probably in Australia and the southern US And California that grow these. So we are going to grow a great flower. It's called the bougainvillea. And I remember them from growing up in California. So believe it or not, I cannot find a very good answer to my question on the Internet. And so at the front of our house where I want to plant these bougainvilleas is a place where we get approximately three and a half to four hours of direct sunlight. And then after that, the porch would kind of put the bougainvilleas into shade for the rest of the day. So I've got mixed opinions of whether that's good or not because I think in general bougainvilleas need a lot of sunlight. But I'm going to throw it out to our listeners. If anyone has experienced growing bougainvilleas, well, about four hours of direct sunlight, will that be enough or do you think that they would definitely need more than that so we can plant them somewhere else? But that would be in a place where they wouldn't be noticed as much, which is unfortunate because it's a very gorgeous looking plant. But yeah. So if anybody out there has experience in growing the bougainvilleas and knows that they could flourish with four, roughly four hours of direct sunlight and the rest was kind of in the shade, send us an email and let me know your experience. The date was 12-30-1966. It was a clear moonlit night as Canadian Pacific Flight 421 flew at 31,000ft through the inky darkness just off the Peruvian coast, the DC8 was on its way to Mexico City. Captain Robert Milbank had put the aircraft on autopilot. CO pilot JD Dahl looked down at his watch. It was 3am Most of the passengers were asleep. It was very quiet on the aircraft. He was thinking about the great time he and his wife had at their home in White Rock, British Columbia, last New Year's Eve. Captain Milbanke, who had been looking at something off the left side, asked Doll to take a look at this. The pilot and co pilot could see two extremely bright white lights. Within a minute, the two white lights seemed to be moving towards their aircraft. Finally, the object placed itself off their left wing and paced their DC8. CO pilot JD Dahl thought the object was roughly the same size as their DC8 and about 500ft away they could see a row of dimmer yellow white lights. Between the two white lights, they called for other crew members to take a look. Some thought they could make out the shape of a craft, like a saucer shape. After seven minutes, the lights moved towards the tail of the DC8 and finally the object took off at tremendous speed. When asked about the sighting later, Captain Robert Milbank said, I must say that in my 26 years of flying, including wartime, I have never seen anything like this before. And I'm convinced that UFOs are not a dream in somebody's head. What did the crew of Flight 421 see in the early morning hours of December 30, 1966? In his final report, co pilot J.D. dahl said, I was a non believer before, but I was satisfied that we'd been intercepted by something not of this earth. And I've been in the interception business for four years.

My next guest is retired RCMP Sergeant Craig Cochran. Craig spent 28 years with the RCMP at the detachments like Norway House in Churchill and several other detachments, mainly in northern Manitoba. So Craig, welcome to the podcast.

So I just want to tell our listeners I'm just going to go over briefly what this sighting was. So this took place on October 3, 1981, and it was near Garden Hill, Manitoba, on Island Lake and I think more specifically Cochrane Bay. And the sighting took place at around 8:45pm at night. And it was a family of five. It was Albert Punch, his wife Elizabeth Punch, and their three children. And they were in a boat and they were chopping Firewood. And when they were coming back, this craft in Alberta said in his interview that it was 200ft wide and at one point it was as close as 200 yards and it was within 4 or 5ft of the water. A very dramatic sighting. And this took place over over 30 minutes. So Craig, the first question I want to ask you, and just this will be a little bit of background, is what was it like working out of Norway House in the early 80s?

C

Well, it was a little different than it would be today. At that time. I was assigned Island Lake reserves as my area to investigate. So I would get flown in from Norway House every other week to Island Lake, which is a couple hundred miles away. I'd be dropped off on a Thursday and flown out on a, on the following Monday and two weeks later I'd be back in. So yeah, we're quite different because you're a one man shoal and it's a ten man detachment, ten person detachment now. But you get flown in, you had a boat to get you around. There's four different reserves in there. Garden Hill, St. Teresa Point, Wasagamac, Red Sucker Lake. So you'd go by boat to the, to the areas where you'd continue walking and then continue investigations and snowmobile in the winter.

So is this when you said you would fly in, is this a bush plane? Like the plane would land on the water?

C

No, there's a, there's a Runway on Stevenson island which is right at Garden Hill. And we have at that time the RCMP had Twin Otter, one posted in Thompson, Manitoba and one in Winnipeg. So we would either fly in on the Twin Otter and land on the airstrip on Stevenson island or if the police aircraft wasn't available at that time, we just charter in on a Cessna from Norway House or NASDAQ or just a commercial private aircraft to fly in.

A

And how many constables were at Norway House during that time?

C

At that time there would be 10 members in Norway House and we looked after a number of reserves. It was Island Lake, God's Lake Narrows, Oxford House, Poplar River. Yeah, I guess that would be about it.

A

So you covered. It was quite an area that you would cover.

C

Yes, correct.

A

So how, how did you first hear about this UFO sighting? From the punches. How, how did that first come to your attention?

C

Well, it was reported to Thompson RCMP Telecoms and they referred it to Norway House detachment because Island Lake was our responsibility and another member took the, took the complaint. I wasn't in Island Lake at the time, unfortunately, I was back in Norway House for my week to work back in Norway house. So unfortunately I couldn't get back in to speak to the punters until two weeks. I had just come out, so it was two weeks before I could get back in and talk to them. But it would have been a little bit nicer to talk to them if I hadn't been in there to talk to them right after the fact to see, you know, how they were handling the situation. The.

A

So I think the constable that took the call, I think he was Gormley, I think is when I look at the report. Yeah, Doug Gormley. So did you, because it took you a few weeks to get to the punches. Did you guys or do you remember discussing it like, wow, what is that? Like, was there any talk of the UFO incident before you actually got there?

C

No, there wouldn't. There wouldn't have been any contact with them prior to me getting there. But it would be one of the files I was assigned to investigate in there. And I would have tracked the punches down and interviewed them, which is our procedure. We'd interview them separately to, you know, it was just our procedure to not interview two people in the same situation together because if they were concocting some kind of a story, it would be pretty easy for them to listen to what the one person said and just say, yeah, whatever they said, that's what, what happened. But we'd interviewed them separately and they related their story a very similar scenario sequence of events. And no doubt in my mind this was not something they concocted.

A

When you. Now I don't know if you'll be able to remember this, but when you were taking the statement and it shows you, you didn't bring a portable typewriter because you hand wrote the, the statements. When you were taking these statements, what was going through your mind? Because it's a pretty incredible sighting.

C

Well, yeah, I mean it's. I was quite interested, of course in hearing the story and like, I mean anybody would be just waiting in anticipation of, okay, what happened next?

A

Did you in your report, and I'm going to quote from it, you actually said they both appeared to be in awe over the occurrence. It is not felt that the story was concocted by the punches. So you felt this was real. Whatever happened, they really saw it?

C

Definitely, yes.

A

Did you ever in your own mind at least speculate what, what they could have seen?

C

What do you mean?

A

Like when you had written out your report, I noticed with other RCMP officers, they, they sometimes they think about what it could have been like. Did you ever think this could have been a helicopter or a low flying plane or it just was something that. No, this didn't fit any category. I, I don't know what this could have been.

C

Yeah, I see what you mean. No, definitely a person would have those thoughts running through their mind and no, no, there was nothing that I could come up with that would be a possibility. Another possibility.

A

Yeah. And the other thing I, because not this case, but other cases, people have said, well, you know, it could have been a helicopter, but the punches turned the motor off at one point and there was no sound. And a helicopter that was only five feet above the water would have made a incredible rocket.

C

Oh, definitely, for sure.

A

Were you ever, after you wrote up your report, after you got back and wrote the report up, were you ever contacted by your supervisor or anyone about this sighting?

C

Not that I recall, nope.

A

Okay. And the, around the same time, were there any other, if you can remember any other UFO reports around the same time as the punches?

C

None that I recall. But that doesn't mean that there weren't other reports that came in. I mean it was our policy and procedure at the time and our standing orders that any reports of anything unidentified flying object, we were required to do a full investigation and report on it. And the report went, I believe to the National Research Council or one of those national bodies.

A

So there was a specific request, at least at that time that if you are investigating a UFO sighting that, that definitely had to go to certain channels.

C

Correct? Yeah. And you couldn't, you know, like you weren't, you wouldn't be technically, you shouldn't ignore the report. You'd have to go out and look into it.

That's another interesting fact that I've come across looking into a lot of these RCMP investigations is including yours. They were thoroughly investigated so this wasn't taken lightly or you know, oh boy, do I have to do this? They were, they were treated like a real investigation from. I've looked over many of them and that was what came across to me, that this was taken seriously.

Yes, it was. I mean it wasn't a criminal investigation, but it was certainly a report that required follow up investigation and a full report on.

There is something else and I don't know if you'll know this or remember it is at the time, and this is the late 60s, the 70s and definitely probably the early 80s, the Canadian military had a small unit that investigated UFOs. Did you ever hear of that unit?

Not that I may have, but it doesn't, I don't recollect it at this point.

Here are the Canadian civil aviation anomalies for the week of May 5 through May 9, 2025. On May 6, a Moncton Flight College diamond aircraft flying from Romeo LeBlanc International Airport reported a laser attack with four nautical miles from final approach for Runway 11 at 1200ft. No impact on the crew and no evasive action was taken. Also on May 6, a city of Calgary Aerospatial aircraft flying from Calgary International Airport reported being struck by a green laser in the vicinity of McKnight Boulevard and Fourth Street North. On May 6, a WestJet Encore de Havilland aircraft flying from Leamington Airport to Vancouver International Airport cleared for takeoff, then declined clearance and requested to return to the gate and emergency medical services for a sick flight attendant. There was an impact on one of the flights. All other flights proceeded to their destinations without further incident.
