My eyelids are getting heavy. Looks like it's finally time to go to sleep. Let me just get into my warm, comfy bed, pull up the blanket blankets, Take a sip of water and. Allow myself to gently fall asleep.
Mindy Thomas
Attention, attention, attention. So long, Guy Roz. This is your reminder. It is past your bedtime. You must stop whatever you are doing and fall asleep immediately.
Guy Raz
Well, I was about to fall asleep, but then you woke me up with your go to sleep reminder.
Mindy Thomas
Guy Roz, would you like to snooze?
Guy Raz
Snooze? Yes, I would love to snooze.
Mindy Thomas
Snoozing in 3, 2, 1.
Guy Raz
Alright, let me get back into bed, put on my weighted eye mask and relax. Mindy, how in the world am I ever gonna get any sleep around here? End of snoozing, of course.
Mindy Thomas
Would you like to snooze again, Zoodle?
Guy Raz
How can I possibly snooze if you won't let me sleep?
Mindy Thomas
Is that a yes to begin your final snooze?
Guy Raz
Final snooze. I'd give anything for even a five minute snooze at this point.
Mindy Thomas
Snooze alarm set for five minutes.
Guy Raz
What? That's not what I meant.
Mindy Thomas
Turn it up, Reg. I'll be out of the kitchen in a sec. Just gotta get some pots and pans out of the cupboard here. For no reason at all.
Guy Raz
I would just like to get some sleep.
Mindy Thomas
Guy Ross, your snooze time is up
Guy Raz
and so am I.
Mindy Thomas
You are all out of snoozes. Time to go to sleep.
Guy Raz
Not before I make one final stop for the night.
Jed Anderson
Mm. Never eat the green seaweed. Yep, I found that out the hard way.
Guy Raz
What? No, he said.
Mindy Thomas
Ah, flip and mosey. He's space sailing and crack me up. Reg. Reggie. Reggie, you fell asleep. We're about to get to the best part.
Jed Anderson
Flip and Mosey will be Right back after these messages.
Mindy Thomas
Oh, now you wake up just in time for the commercial break.
Jed Anderson
Is your fish exhausted from swimming all day?
Mindy Thomas
Huh?
Jed Anderson
Tired of chasing bubbles for a good night's sleep away from the loud and chaotic environment y' all call home?
Mindy Thomas
No, he's talking about fish, Reg.
Jed Anderson
Introducing the new Sand Dollar Sleep Retreat and Spa. An all inclusive resort to give the fish in your life the rest and relaxation they need in order to keep swimming for days to come.
Mindy Thomas
A sleep resort for fish? Fancy. Do fish even sleep?
Jed Anderson
Now, I know what you're thinking. Do fish even slee?
Mindy Thomas
That's exactly what I was thinking.
Jed Anderson
And yes, they do.
Mindy Thomas
Huh?
Jed Anderson
Here at the Sand Dollar Sleep Retreat, we use science to give your pet fishies the best sleep of their life.
Mindy Thomas
Wait, science?
Jed Anderson
Based on new scientific research from the Max Planck Institute of Biological Cybernetics in Germany.
Mindy Thomas
Ugh, that's a mouthful.
Jed Anderson
And published in the scientific journal Nature Communications.
Mindy Thomas
Ooh, peer reviewed. Nice.
Jed Anderson
Your pet fish needs and deserves the same quality of sleep that y' all as a human are entitled to.
Mindy Thomas
Fish sleep like we do. Mandy, is that Guy Ross this late at night? Shouldn't he be sleeping? Hang on just a sec.
Jed Anderson
So why not give your fishy fish a little treat? A retreat at the Sand Dollar Sleep Retreat in spa where they can sleep with the fishes so they won't end up sleeping with the fishes. The Sand Dollar Sleep Retreating Spa is located at the bottom of the hill next to Little Buff Bunny Big Gym.
Mindy Thomas
Wow. Can you believe this, Reg? Fish not only sleep, but they sleep like we do. Well, like I do.
Guy Raz
Mindy, open up.
Mindy Thomas
I'm coming. I'm coming. Guy Raz, why are you screaming and banging at this hour of the night? You're gonna wake up the whole neighborhood.
Guy Raz
I'm going up the whole neighborhood. How is anyone in this entire town supposed to get any sleep with your TV blasting out the windows? Wait, what happened to your windows? Where are your windows, Mindy?
Mindy Thomas
Oh, I ate them.
Guy Raz
Huh?
Mindy Thomas
Well, they were made out of sugar glass and I got hungry, so I ate them. You okay there, Guy Razzy, you look like you haven't slept in weeks.
Guy Raz
That's because I haven't slept in weeks. Every single night you're blasting that show with the space alien. What are they called? Chip and Flubby?
Mindy Thomas
Flip and Mosey. They're hilarious. You want to come in and watch? They're probably about to come back from the commercial break.
Guy Raz
No, I want to go to sleep. But how am I supposed to do that with your flippin mosey alien TV show? Blasting through your windowless windows and up through mine. Oh, hi, Reggie. Sorry, I didn't see you there. I'm sorry, Reggie. I still don't speak pigeon.
Mindy Thomas
Wait a minute, Reggie, that's a great idea.
Guy Raz
What's a great idea, Guy Raz?
Mindy Thomas
Reggie and I have the perfect solution to your sleeping problem.
Guy Raz
Mindy, you and all of your late night racket are my sleeping problem.
Mindy Thomas
Guy Raz, you know I can't control myself. I think you're really gonna like this.
Guy Raz
Oh, no. I don't know what this is, but I can tell already that I am not going to like it.
Mindy Thomas
Okay, so what if I told you that this was a sol that would allow me to keep blasting my TV while allowing you to catch up on some much needed sleep so you won't be a Krankasaurus rex.
Guy Raz
Oh, what? I'm not a Krankasaurus?
Mindy Thomas
Now, where did I put that fish suit?
Guy Raz
Oh, no, no, no, no. I know where this is going, and no. No way. I am not going business.
Mindy Thomas
Swimsuit space suit. Lawsuit. Aha. Fish suit. Perfect. Here you go, Guy Raz. Just put this on.
Guy Raz
You want me to put on a goldfish costume?
Mindy Thomas
It's more of a disguise. Here, I'll help you squeeze into it. Now just hold your arms up and hold your breath.
Guy Raz
Fine.
Mindy Thomas
There you go. Fits like a glove.
Guy Raz
Well, I guess it is pretty comfortable. Warmer and softer than I expected. Maybe I could use it as a sleeping bag.
Mindy Thomas
No time for sleep, Guy Raz. We gotta get down to the Sand Dollar Sleep Retreat next to little buff bunny's big gym.
Guy Raz
Wait, you're taking me somewhere? Mindy, it's after midnight.
Mindy Thomas
Yeah, I know, which means there's no time to waste. Come on, we gotta get you to bed.
Guy Raz
What is happening?
Mindy Thomas
Okay, here we are. The majestic Sand Dollar Sleep Retreat. Ooh, and the sign says, newly renovated. You're gonna love it here, Guy Raz.
Guy Raz
Guy Raz, I'm coming. Just a little tough to walk in this thing.
Mindy Thomas
Yeah, I guess the flippers don't leave much room for feet, do they?
Guy Raz
I just want some sleep.
Mindy Thomas
And that's exactly what we're gonna get you, buddy. Right this way, Reggie. Mind getting the door there?
Jed Anderson
Greetings and welcome to the Sand Dollar Sleep Retreat in Spa.
Mindy Thomas
Hi, I'm Mindy.
Guy Raz
Hello there.
Jed Anderson
Oh, my, A fish out of water. One moment, please. Let's get you a tank.
Guy Raz
Sir, do I mother.
Jed Anderson
Yes, Scotty. Yes, we've got an abnormally large goldfish who just flopped in through the front door. We're gonna need one of the big 75 gallon tanks on wheel stat. Thank you, Scotty.
Mindy Thomas
Now that's what I call hospitality.
Jed Anderson
Now, how can I help you folks this evening?
Guy Raz
I would just like somewhere quiet to sleep.
Mindy Thomas
Oh. So you see my pet fish here.
Guy Raz
Pet fish? I'm Guppy.
Mindy Thomas
Guppy. He's a guppy. Full grown, you know, grew up in a big lake.
Guy Raz
What?
Mindy Thomas
Real well behaved though.
Jed Anderson
I see. And your pet Guppy can talk?
Guy Raz
Of course I can talk.
Mindy Thomas
I'm a. Oh, yeah, trained him myself. He's very, very intelligent.
Guy Raz
Well, I do read a for a fish.
Jed Anderson
Oh, I'm sorry. And a giant pigeon. How did I not see you there?
Mindy Thomas
Oh, that's because he was standing behind my giant pet fish. This is Reggie. He's my pigeon.
Jed Anderson
Oh my. Why is everyone so big? There we go. 75 gallon tank. Now who needs it?
Mindy Thomas
Wow, look at that giant aquarium guy, Raz. Is it heated?
Jed Anderson
Uh, kind of. The water is kept at 60 degrees Fahrenheit, 18 degrees Celsius. Should be perfect for a slim bodied goldfish like your pet here.
Guy Raz
Mindy, I can't get in that tank. The water's practically freezing. What?
Mindy Thomas
Nah, water doesn't freeze until it drops
Jed Anderson
to 32 degrees Fahrenheit, which is zero degrees Celsius. Wait, hold on. Is that a talking fish?
Guy Raz
No.
Jed Anderson
I must be hearing things. I gotta get some sleep.
Guy Raz
So do I.
Jed Anderson
See you later. Thank you, Scotty.
Mindy Thomas
Okay, fishy, time to get in your tank.
Jed Anderson
Now, before we get y' all the sleep treat you came for, I'll need to take you on a little tour of the facilities and tell you more about our program here. Did I mention that everything we do at our retreat is based on a new scientific discovery you did in your commercial.
Mindy Thomas
We saw it on tv.
Jed Anderson
Now if you will please follow me.
Mindy Thomas
Don't mind if we do.
Guy Raz
Mindy, a little help here, please.
Mindy Thomas
Oh, right. Sorry. I got you, buddy. Okay, little guppy, here we go. Push, push, push, push.
Jed Anderson
The sand Dollar Sleep retreat all began after scientists at the Max Planck Institute in Germany set out to explore the sleep styles of fish.
Mindy Thomas
Sleep styles?
Jed Anderson
Oh, sure, there are all types of sleep styles in the animal kingdom. Like nocturnal sleepers who sleep during the day but stay up all night.
Guy Raz
Oh ye bats and owls and mindies, apparently.
Jed Anderson
And then there are hibernators who sleep through the entire winter.
Mindy Thomas
Yeah, like black bears and groundhogs.
Jed Anderson
And then you got your half brained sleepers. We see a lot of them here. In fact, there's one now, a dolphin. Hey, Flipsy.
Mindy Thomas
But dolphins aren't Fish. They're marine mammals. I thought this was a spot for fish.
Jed Anderson
Oh, yes, we are. We are very inclusive, aren't we, Mr. Guppy?
Guy Raz
Uh, yeah.
Jed Anderson
Flipsy here, along with the orcas and beluga whales, only lets half of her brain sleep at a time. The other half is on high alert for predators. Well, we won't find any predators here at the Sand Dollar Sleep, Retreat and Spa, now, will we, Flipsy? That's right. We won't. Getting dolphins to relax can be a challenge, but it is one of our sports specialties.
Guy Raz
And what about the people? I mean, fish, who prefer to sleep at night so they have energy and mental clarity during the day.
Jed Anderson
Oh, I'm so glad you asked. You see, those are diurnal sleepers. And they include humans, chickens, giraffes, and according to this new scientific discovery, fish.
Guy Raz
Fish and humans.
Mindy Thomas
Which is why we're here tonight. I'd like to get my friend. I mean, my fish here. The nighttime sleep. He needs to be happy and healthy and not cranky at me for blasting my TV all night long.
Jed Anderson
Well, you've come to the right place. You see, up until now, we didn't know much about the sleeping needs of fish.
Mindy Thomas
Up until now, I didn't even know fish slept at all.
Jed Anderson
And that they do. You see, these scientists discovered that fish not only sleep, but they sleep almost exactly like humans.
Guy Raz
I would do anything to sleep like a human again. Or a fish.
Mindy Thomas
Wait, what do you mean fish sleep like humans?
Jed Anderson
Well, for one, just like humans fish. Or in this particular study, zebrafish, need rest after a long day. You mean they.
Guy Raz
What?
Mindy Thomas
You're also a fish, remember? Say we.
Jed Anderson
Oh, right.
Guy Raz
So fish, when we sleep, we just lay or float there in the water, not moving, tuned out from the outside world.
Jed Anderson
That's exactly right. In fact, we've got an Alaskan salmon sleeping in this aquatic spa chamber right over here.
Guy Raz
Okay.
Mindy Thomas
Man, this thing is heavy. Uh, he doesn't look like he's asleep to me. I'm not even sure he's alive.
Jed Anderson
What do you mean?
Guy Raz
Well, wouldn't a sleeping fish have its eyes closed?
Jed Anderson
Oh, no, no, no. A fish such as would know that fish do not have eyelids.
Guy Raz
Oh, right, yes. A fish like me. Of course. I knew that. I was just making a joke.
Mindy Thomas
Wait, fish don't have eyelids? How do they block out the light?
Jed Anderson
Well, that can be tricky when trying to nap during the day.
Mindy Thomas
Fish nap during the day like babies.
Guy Raz
I would do anything to have a nap right now.
Jed Anderson
You are correct. Without eyelids, fish are not able to block out the light during the day. Which is why it's very important for them to get plenty of sleep at night.
Guy Raz
Did you hear that, Mindy? It's important for fish like me to get plenty of sleep at night.
Mindy Thomas
Sorry, I'm still stuck on the whole sleeping with their eyes wide open thing.
Jed Anderson
Well, just like humans, if fish don't get enough sleep, they will have to make up for it by sleeping a little longer the next night.
Guy Raz
Wow. So how did these scientists discover so much about the way fish sleep?
Mindy Thomas
Yeah, did they get into the rivers and lakes and oceans with them and then wait until it was their bedtime and then read them a little story and sing them a lullaby and then stare at them while they slept with their eyes wide open?
Jed Anderson
Oh, heavens no.
Mindy Thomas
Yeah, I knew it. Scientists have to be much sneakier than that.
Guy Raz
Wait, I remember reading something about this, Mindy.
Mindy Thomas
You did?
Guy Raz
Yeah, an article that talked about how a scientist had developed an autonomous microscope and camera system. One that was able to automatically track and record fish wherever they swam or
Mindy Thomas
maybe wherever they slept.
Jed Anderson
That's right. In fact, the system was developed by a neuroscientist in this exact study. For this exact study?
Mindy Thomas
You mean a brain scientist came up with a self swimming microscope and camera combo designed to snoop on sleeping fish?
Jed Anderson
Well, more or less, yes. And in this study, the camera followed 105 zebrafish around a tank as they swam, hunted for food, and slept with their eyes open.
Guy Raz
And what did they discover when they went back to replay the footage they captured?
Mindy Thomas
Yeah, did the snoop cam pick up any juicy clues to the secret lives of seafood, Mindy?
Jed Anderson
Why, yes, it did. You see, in addition to discovering that these zebrafish sleep an average of 10 hours a night.
Mindy Thomas
10 hours? I should have made you a zebrafish guy, Raz.
Guy Raz
Tell me about it.
Jed Anderson
The scientists were able to track the eye movements of the zebrafish. And as they studied them, they discovered that like humans, these fish had four different stages of sleep.
Mindy Thomas
There's more than one stage of sleep? I didn't know this. Maybe that's because I'm sleeping through them.
Jed Anderson
How about I show y' all the four sleep cycles?
Mindy Thomas
Sure.
Jed Anderson
Okay, follow me this way into one of our sleep chambers.
Mindy Thomas
All right. Wow, Is that a real zebra fish?
Jed Anderson
That it is. Now pay close attention to her eyes.
Mindy Thomas
Is she asleep or awake? I can't tell. This open eyed sleep thing is really throwing me for a loop.
Jed Anderson
What y' all are witnessing here is sleep stage number one, the deepest sleep of the night. Oh, she's sound asleep.
Guy Raz
But how can you Tell.
Jed Anderson
Well, if you look closely, her eyes are very steep.
Mindy Thomas
That is one dead eyed stare.
Jed Anderson
Yes, everything is very still in this stage. Her body, her brain, her eyes.
Guy Raz
Must be nice.
Mindy Thomas
Wait, look. Her eyes are moving. They're starting to slowly move from side to side.
Guy Raz
Yeah, her pupils, or the large black dots in the center of her eyes, keep moving to the sides of her eyes.
Mindy Thomas
Right, and then they just kinda hang out there.
Jed Anderson
Ah, yes. Looks like we've advanced to sleep stage number two. The slow side looking sleep stage. This happens mostly at night.
Guy Raz
And is she still asleep?
Jed Anderson
Oh, yes. In fact, she's still in a somewhat deep, deep sleep. But not as deep as stage one.
Mindy Thomas
Check it out. Her eyes are starting to get all wiggly.
Guy Raz
They're twitching and then slowly drifting back to the center.
Jed Anderson
Y' all are very observant. This means she's beginning to move into the third stage of sleep, where the waking hours are near waking hours.
Guy Raz
What time is it anyway?
Jed Anderson
Oh, here at the Sand Dollar sleep retreat, time is irrelevant, of course.
Mindy Thomas
But if you look out the window over there, the sun is beginning to come up over the horizon.
Guy Raz
It's morning. Mindy, you kept me up all night.
Mindy Thomas
I know. Isn't this fun?
Jed Anderson
As dawn's early light approaches, the morning begins. She moves into the third stage of the sleep cycle. Here. You'll notice that both of this fish's eyes turn to the same side.
Mindy Thomas
And then what?
Jed Anderson
And then nothing. They just stay there. Oh, good morning, Zelda.
Mindy Thomas
Zelda.
Jed Anderson
Oh, my apologies. I should have properly introduced y'. All. This zebrafish is one of our most valued guests. Zelda, Zelda, this is Mindy and her gigantic pet guppy.
Guy Raz
Good morning, fellow fish.
Mindy Thomas
Hi, Zelda. It was pretty bonker balls to watch you sleep with your twitchy little eyes wide open.
Jed Anderson
Oh, Zelda, you are too much.
Guy Raz
But wait a minute.
Jed Anderson
Yes, Mr. Huge Guppy, sir?
Guy Raz
Didn't you say that there were four stages in the sleep cycle of a fish?
Jed Anderson
Well, I don't know. Why don't you tell me? After all, you are a fish, aren't you?
Guy Raz
Oh, right.
Mindy Thomas
Wait, look. Zelda's sleeping again. Or maybe she's dead. I don't know. That stone cold fish stare is really creeping me out.
Jed Anderson
Are you? Yes. What you are observing here is the fourth and final stage in the fish sleep cycle.
Mindy Thomas
And now she's awake again. Look at her swimming around.
Guy Raz
Hold on a second. Are you suggesting that the fourth and final stage of the sleep cycle is the napping stage?
Jed Anderson
To answer your question, yes. The final stage of the sleep cycle Is the napping stage. And it takes place in short bursts throughout the day.
Guy Raz
Look at her eyes move back and forth as she swims around. Is she looking for something?
Jed Anderson
Oh yes. She's looking for potential threats.
Mindy Thomas
Predators.
Guy Raz
Wait. Now she's back to that dead eyed stare.
Mindy Thomas
She must be asleep again. Wake up, Zelda. Wake up.
Jed Anderson
Oh, she can't hear you. Even though her naps like this one Only last around five to 10 minutes at a time, make no mistake, she is experiencing an incredibly deep sleep.
Guy Raz
Man, she's lucky.
Mindy Thomas
So what's happening in her little fish head right now?
Jed Anderson
Well, during this short but intense period of sleep.
Mindy Thomas
Let's just call it a nap.
Jed Anderson
Sure. During this nap, there is very little activity happening inside her brain. And waking up before she's ready would be very difficult.
Mindy Thomas
Yeah, but how do we know this? I mean, it's not like we can see into her brains or anything.
Jed Anderson
Well, maybe we can't, but I bet
Guy Raz
the scientists from the fish sleep study could.
Jed Anderson
That is correct.
Mindy Thomas
But how?
Jed Anderson
Well, when zebrafish are just little tiny babies, they are transparent.
Mindy Thomas
Zebrafish make see through babies that they
Jed Anderson
do for the first three weeks of their lives. Zebrafish are see through?
Listener Callers
Wow.
Jed Anderson
They're. Now come with me this way into the next chamber.
Guy Raz
Please tell me this is the sleeping stop.
Mindy Thomas
Little see through zebrafish babies. Aw, look, I can see their tiny brains. They're so cute.
Jed Anderson
That's right. And y' all are not the first to notice the their tiny brains. In fact, the scientists ability to study their brains was a very important part of this sleep discovery.
Mindy Thomas
Are you telling us that while the zebrafish were sleeping in the study, the scientists were peeking into their little fish brains with their own bare eyes?
Jed Anderson
Yes, but also with some extremely advanced imaging technology.
Guy Raz
And I assume this means that the scientists were able to watch things like brain cells turning on and off?
Jed Anderson
That is correct, sir. And they were able to match the brain activity to the different stages of sleep.
Mindy Thomas
And I bet they were also carefully watching to see what the zebrafish's bodies and eyeballs were doing.
Jed Anderson
Correct again. And also matching that information to the different stages of sleep.
Guy Raz
Wow, I had no idea that fish sleep was so complex.
Jed Anderson
Well, you should know, being such a fine fish as yourself, sir.
Guy Raz
Oh, y. Yeah, of course. Right. Sorry, I forgot.
Jed Anderson
But yes, fish sleep is incredibly complex in a way that surprised even the scientists working on this study. And though the brains of the zebrafish are much smaller than human brains, when it comes to sleep, we have a lot more in common with fish than meets the eye.
Mindy Thomas
Well, this has been a great tour,
Listener Callers
but
Mindy Thomas
I gotta say, I'm getting a little sleepy myself. You got a spare tank around here I can maybe take a little snooze in? Maybe one with the, like, a raft or something to lay on?
Jed Anderson
Oh, I'm sure I could find you something.
Guy Raz
I am really looking forward to my stay here at the Sand Dollar Sleep Retreat. I gotta say, this place is really the kind of quiet and relaxing environment I've been needing.
Listener Callers
Knock, knock. Hello?
Jed Anderson
I need help, please. Oh. One moment, please. Looks like we have some new guests. Hi, I'm Dennis.
Guy Raz
Oh, no.
Jed Anderson
And these are my pet fish, Heartfish.
Mindy Thomas
I'm a mermaid.
Jed Anderson
And I'm a Narwhale. Oh, I see. We saw your commercial on TV and they wanted to come here and stay at your luxurious sleep resort. Of course, sir. Let me see if I can get you each a tank.
Listener Callers
No.
Mindy Thomas
Nope, don't need one. I can walk on my own two feet.
Jed Anderson
Oh, my. She's a reverse mermaid. You see fish on top, human on the bottom. Why is it so quiet in here? Yeah. Oh, Hi, Reggie. Hi, Mindy. Hi. Gigantic goldfish. That kinda looks like Guy Raz, Dennis. Oh, it is Guy Raz. Hi, Guy Raz.
Mindy Thomas
Gang's all here. Hey, everyone. Welcome to the Scientific Sleep Party. Sleep bank party.

This episode dives into a surprisingly relatable scientific question: Do fish sleep like humans? Using humor, adventure, and guided storytelling, Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz explore brand-new research revealing the sleep patterns of fish—specifically zebrafish—and how these patterns mirror our own. The episode provides a mix of scientific discovery and playful antics, taking listeners on a "sleep retreat" under the sea, and revealing just how complex (and human-like!) fish sleep can be.
“The final stage of the sleep cycle is the napping stage. And it takes place in short bursts throughout the day.”
— Jed Anderson (22:05)
“Though the brains of the zebrafish are much smaller than human brains, when it comes to sleep, we have a lot more in common with fish than meets the eye.”
— Jed Anderson (25:02–25:23)
On Human & Fish Sleep:
“Fish sleep like we do. ... Your pet fish needs and deserves the same quality of sleep that y’all as a human are entitled to.”
— Jed Anderson (05:01)
On the sleep study’s wow factor:
“I had no idea that fish sleep was so complex.”
— Guy Raz (24:53)
Light-hearted banter:
“Wait, fish don’t have eyelids? How do they block out the light?”
— Mindy Thomas (15:47)
“I would do anything to sleep like a human again. Or a fish.”
— Guy Raz (14:31)
On the unique trait of zebrafish:
“For the first three weeks of their lives, zebrafish are see-through?”
— Mindy Thomas (23:29)
On the connection between all sleepers:
“When it comes to sleep, we have a lot more in common with fish than meets the eye.”
— Jed Anderson (25:23)
The playful, curious tone blends science with humor. There’s plenty of wordplay, silly disguises, winks to grownups, and whimsical side-steps into character (fish) perspectives—making even technical details feel accessible and fun for all ages.
Fish not only sleep—sometimes for 10 hours a day—but they also experience multiple sleep stages remarkably similar to humans, from deep nighttime sleep to daytime power naps. Thanks to transparent zebrafish and advanced imaging, scientists have found just how universal and essential sleep is in the animal kingdom (even if fish never close their eyes!).
Perfect for: Science-loving kids, curious families, and anyone who’s ever wondered what’s really happening when your goldfish seems to be just floating in thought.
